Celebrating Romney's Religion, Huckabee Says Obama Is 'Self-Professed Evangelical' Trying To Redefine Marriage: VIDEO

Huckabeemormon

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a man who has questioned the existence of evolution, addressed the elephant in the room at the Republican National Convention last night: candidate Mitt Romney's Mormon faith.

There has been a lot of talk this election season whether the GOP's most vocal base, Evangelicals, will support a man who worships in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

As Romney and his campaign team try to reclaim his faith, rather than run away from it, Huckabee tried his darndest to reframe the debate by describing President Obama as an evangelical whose marriage politics target the faithful.

I want to clear the air about something that has been said. People wonder whether guys like me, an evangelical, would only support a fellow evangelical?  Well my friends I want to tell you something, of the four people on the two tickets, the only self-professed evangelical is Barack Obama. And he supports changing the definition of marriage. Believes that human life is disposable and expendable at any time in the wound, even beyond the womb. And he tells people of faith that they have to bow their knees to the God of government and violate their faith and conscience in order to comply with what he calls, health care. Friends I know we can do better.

Watch video of Huckabee's remarks AFTER THE JUMP.

  1. actually, it's republicans that think life is disposable. they're the ones sending the non-wealthy youth of america overseas to die for their own financial interests. they're the ones turning a blind-eye to the culture of gun-violence that plagues this country. they're the ones who care about "life" only as it revolves around BIRTH - once you're born, you're not cared about anymore. especially if you're LGBT.

but hey, i just want to congratulate all the gay republicans out there. congrats! you've had no success whatsoever in changing the hearts and minds of your chosen party.

why are republicans anti-gay? because gay republicans have given them no reason to not be.

  2. The Republican party is being lead by those that worship money and have blind adoration for those that have it. Their messiah is a false prophet named Ayn Rand whose philosophy can be summed up with the phrase "I have mine, screw you." These people believe in a contradiction: the economy is in trouble because the poor take too much and the only way to solve the problem is to give more to those who already have everything they need.

Can anyone explain why Americans believe this is the party of traditional Christian values?

  3. Huckabee=huckster, selling outto the LDS to sugar-coat the cultish empire because it shares the same retrograde theocratic goals as the far-right fundiegelicals. There's probably some thread leading to Scientology money somewhere in the mix, too.

  4. GOP is doing just fine on the "morality front" on their own. They are packed with wingnuts who want to legislate on behalf of
"Christianity"..Their moral stance is laughable....Larry Craig, Mark Foley the list is seemingly endless....They are also EXTREMELY dangerous. Many hate themselves for what they are, so they use the power of voting against what they are inside. This is not new. They refuse to admit evident truths and always have. May we be rid of them soon...they are on the way to being extinct...sooner than later, we hope...please.PLEASE go away.. Thanks.

  5. bigger news

even FOX news says ryan LIED last night....when the propagandist wing of thde repub party is shocked at a repub lying so much then maybe there is hope

    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/08/30/paul-ryans-speech-in-three-words/#ixzz251rvLkSe

"...anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech..."

  6. Huckabee isn't being particularly clever when he tries to make "evangelical" a bad word. You'd think he holds the word in high regard, but perhaps his Elmer Gantry routine slipped up into honesty for once.

  7. "Former Governor" Huckleberry needs to keep away from microphones. They seem to be bad for his IQ.

  8. Whoah! That Fox News article (which I doubt will ever be discussed on air) SayWhat linked is really scathing about Ryan's speech.

With this speech Huckabee just proved that he is a party hack, willing to sell out his allegedly core principles for political gain.

IF I were an evangelical I'd be worried Romney is the anti-Christ. The LDS religion is based on a SEQUEL to the Bible written by a convicted con man. The Book Of Mormon has Jesus showing up in the Americas after his crucifixion and it changes the mythology and cosmology of the New Testament. If Mormonism is "Christian" so is South Park. Both have Jesus show up with some regularity but he sure as heck doesn't act like the same guy.

It's like someone writing a sequel to Lord Of The Rings set at the Jersey Shore. It might tell a decent story but it's NOT a Tolkien book and purists aren't going to accept it as part of the official canon. (That would, however, explain "Snooki." She's a Hobbit.)

  9. That Fox News Article isn't an article. It's an opinion piece written by a liberal. She writes stuff like that all the time on their website.

  10. Mike Huckabee, always full of smiles and bonhomie, is the biggest liar and hypocrite. His church, the Southern Baptist Convention, most certainly does not believe that Mormons are Christians.

"I asked Huckabee, who describes himself as the only Republican candidate with a degree in theology, if he considered Mormonism a cult or a religion. 'I think it’s a religion,’ he said. 'I really don’t know much about it.' I was about to jot down this piece of boilerplate when Huckabee surprised me with a question of his own: 'Don’t Mormons,' he asked in an innocent voice, 'believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?’" (NYTimes Magazine, 12/2/07, when Huckabee was running against Romney for the Republican nomination)

When the SBC held its annual convention in Salt Lake City, part of its mission while they were there was to convert Mormons to Christianity: 3,000 Southern Baptist volunteers went door-to-door bringing the evangelical message to Mormon neighborhoods.

To equip the volunteers, the SBC developed a video called "The Mormon Puzzle" and distributed copies of it with a book titled Mormonism Unmasked. Both works promised to "lift the veil from one of the greatest deceptions in the history of religion," a blurb on the book's cover announced. (Slate, 12/19/2007)

One thing I can guarantee you will not see in the coming days are the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Fred Luter, or the president of the Southern Baptist Seminary, Albert Mohler, on Huckabee's Fox News show explaining that, yes, now they believe Mormons are Christians.

  11. I find it amusing that the Republicans define marriage by saying the bible defines marriage as between one man and one woman. REALLY? Where??If one actually checks into the"marriages" in the old testement it reads like a porn script.

  12. "Mitt Romney may not be a christian, but he's just as hateful and bigoted as a christian should be, so vote for him!"

  13. Huckabee, down deep inside, really believes that Romney, as a member of the Mormon Cult is headed for HELL. Thats what Evangelicals like him preach and believe. Right now they have to defeat Obama that "foreigner", "socialist", not one of us guy who is illegally occuping the White House, so they soft pedal there deep differences.
