Here's an Epic Fantasia About Gays Fighting Back in St. Petersburg, Russia: VIDEO

Director Elias Koskimies sends us his short musical film "I've Only Just Begun" which he put together with more than 60 people who volunteered their time. The clip is set somewhere just outside of St. Petersburg, and is a stunning visual statement about LGBT discrimination, individuality, and gays fighting back against those who oppress them.

Check it out, AFTER THE JUMP...

St. Petersburg, as you may know, recently passed a ban on "gay propaganda" which bars (and imposes fines for) gay groups, gay books and periodicals, LGBT Pride events, and other "promotion" of homosexuality. It's being considered in Moscow, and nationally in Russia.

  1. This looks like a float from the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras.

  2. What is this, a war between degenerates? That's exactly what it looks like (except for the kids). What purpose does it serve when it's a fight and you don't want either side to win? What a sucky, pointless production. This only confirms the most hideous images of gay people. Something much, much better has to be done.

  3. @UFFDA

    enjoy your self loathing much?

Degenerates? Your gay ass has some rights today because it was the degenerates who fought back.

  4. Gosh, art is hard! It requires appreciating the point of view of the artist, maybe. From my coddled middle class Amerikan perspective, it is difficult for me to imagine a revolution -- to imagine fighting againt the repression that Russian gays face. But maybe it is a revolution. Maybe it is a battle. The film was haunting and disturbing, but not because the gays didn't look like attorneys and accountants and bankers.

  5. Well-intentioned and visually striking, but to quote Pauline Kael, "I smell Art."

only a completely worthless coward could not see the good in this.

  7. It's unwholesome crap and to paraphrase Pauline Kael, "It smells. Period"

  8. how about you specifically show us your own pro-Equality work that you're apparently doing, with the message that you feel will have more positive impact? after all - if you think you could do it better, then you'd obviously be prepared to show us all what Better Work you're doing, right?

What's that? You haven't done any? You just log onto websites to complain about what everyone else is doing? Got it. Now go play in the bathtub with your favourite toaster.

  9. This is a stirring and bold statement drawing attention to what's happening in Russia, and it has a great aesthetic. The ignorance in comments on the site never cease to amaze me. Though I'm sure if this were a Gaga video they'd be eating it up.

  11. That was unbelievably fantastic! I was moved by the artistry of the song, the actors, the cinematography, all of it was superb!

I felt like it was a master work from at the very least a graduate of the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK)...or one of the senior faculty!

    Bravo on a fantastic job!

Я чувствовал, что это был мастером работы с по крайней мере закончил русский государственный университет кинематографии (ВГИК) ... или один из старших преподавателей!

    Браво на фантастическую работу!

  13. Great video and song. Before it started I wondered if the song was going to be a take-off on "We've Only Just Begun"...which would have driven closet-case Richard Carpenter crazy.

  14. It appears to have been made by a bunch of Finns and probably shot in Finland. Interesting fantasy, if a bit violent, for my taste.

Громовой вздох .... я написал два раза ... первый раз по английскому языку для "некультурных" (xa-xa)... и второй раз на русском языке для интеллигенции.

  18. If not for the modern movement inside, the refined Art Deco elegance of the rose-gold cushion-shaped case and guil-loche dial would look at home on display at the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in Paris
