Chris Matthews Explodes at RNC Chair Reince Priebus for Playing Race, Birther Cards: VIDEO

MSNBC host Chris Matthews tore into RNC Chairman Reince Priebus on Morning Joe today over Romney's crack late last week about Obama's birth certificate and accusing Republicans of playing the race card over welfare.

Said Matthews: "It is an embarrassment to your party to play that card...This stuff about getting rid of the work requirement for welfare is dishonest — everyone's pointed out it's dishonest....And you are playing that little ethnic card there. You can play your games and giggle about it, but the fact is that your side is playing that card."

Priebus tried to downplay Matthews' attacks and asserted that Obama is looking to Europe for guidance on healthcare, prompting more outrage from Matthews:

"What? Where do you get this from? This is insane! You mean the Keynesian fiscal policy, you mean the fact that every president we’ve had has tried to offset the economic cycle with stimulus going the other direction is somehow European?...What’s this got to do with Europe and this foreignization of the guy? You’re doing it now! Saying he’s influenced by foreign influences? You’re playing that card again. What’s this European thing of yours? What are you up to with this constant that he’s not really domestic?"

  1. Chris Matthews was AWESOME! I saw this on MSNBC this morning and my jaw literally dropped when I saw him tear into that sniveling little worm... THIS is what we need more of in journalism. The GOP has wrapped itself in lie after lie, racism, sexism and bigotry - and too often they go completely unchallenged.

  2. Wow, that was refreshing. I respect Chris Matthews for cutting through the BS. It's great to watch.

  4. about time

  5. WHOA! This is precisely how to treat these creeps. Mika was totally freaked out.

  6. Unfortunately for Chris Matthews but more so for America, most the remaining members of the Republican and Tea Parties see racism, sexism, homophobia, and mendacity as badges of personal honor, something to be proud of and required of in their candidates.

  7. Yep. Jokes like Romney's are funny to Republicans.

  8. that's all the GOP can do, though.

they can't go to their base and be HONEST about their fiscal policies. they're policies that screw over 99% of their base.

so, instead, they say "Hey, dontcha hate that foreign-born liberal who wants to force your daughter to have an abortion while gays make your sons into muslim trannies in church by spreading AIDS?"

of course they're playing this card. it's all they've got.

  9. notice the rolled eyes, and immature look Preibus gave mathews

  10. Well, OF COURSE they will whine indignantly that it was only an attempt at humor. That's the whole point of a dog whistle. Only the neanderthals on the right wing are supposed to hear it.

  11. Amazing. Rational minds get Matthews' point and it's an easy one. Now anytime they hear someone of the GOP alluding to foreign qualities about Obama, they'll recognize immediately what the GOP is trying to do.

  12. Here's the difference between Obama's birth certificate joke at the correspondents dinner and Romney's "joke" in Michigan. Obama was trying to make lemonade from lemons, but Romney was just throwing more lemons.

  14. A salute to Chris Matthews. Preibus was talking trash and I’m glad to see him called on it. It should happen more often. It should happen every time anybody talks trash to media and the public!

  15. great.....but not as explosive as I had anticipated when I read the comments first.
Matthews should have torn the head off that ill informed know-nothing....he approached doing so when he told him about Teddy Roosvelt and FDR and Truman....but that Priebus prick is clearly a racist $hit who wants to denigrate the President at any cost......with his snide sneering leer of a twisted Dorian Gray face.......
And WTF is wrong with learning from Europe ? the health care system of France is enviable. and Europe does have a bit more experience in social matters than the USA.....as in 3000 years more.
So Repugs are now anti-foreign, anti immigrant, anti gay, anti women, antiblack anti social programmes,
they are just for the wealthy and their precious tax cuts.

    Again I raise the issue;
Is Paul Ryan a member of Opus Dei ? Has he sworn to promote its agenda in politics ?

  16. Every time anyone says anything about welfare, work programs, or any program targeting the poor, Chris immediately says it’s a race issue.

Is Chris saying only blacks are poor? He is the only one connecting welfare programs with race.

    Chris is a racist.

  17. Keep it up, Chris! Wish there were more like you.

  18. every time someone like you, TIM S, makes their always-anonymous comments you prove that you don't have a pair or an an intellectually honest bone in your body :D

    so keep it up.

    Posted by: LittleKiwi | Aug 27, 2012 11:05:56 AM

  19. Every time a Republlican says anything about welfare, work programs, or any program targeting the poor they're attacking African-Americans.

It's a "dog whistle" Tim S. -- as you should well know.

  20. Obamacare was based on Romneycare which was based on an idea originated by the Heritage Foundation a right-wing think tank. Who's European now?

    Posted by: David | Aug 27, 2012 11:07:56 AM

  21. Awesome! I love Mr. Matthews. Way to go!

    Posted by: TooBoot | Aug 27, 2012 11:21:17 AM

  22. What bothers me is that Joe S and Tom B seem so uncomfortable with the "tone." That idiot RNC weasel's attitude of contempt for Matthews' line of questioning, and inability to simply answer the charge was maddening, and rather than resolve the issue, they all decided to take a "time out." Mathhews totally missed the grab on Obamacare, though, which should ALWAYS be thrown back to it's origins with Romney in Mass.

  23. I think the real race issue is the 25% of black men than end up in prison. It's a complete disenfranchisement and no one does anything to try to prevent it. Jesse Jackson used to talk about it, but it almost never comes up in national race debates.

"Help" from CM is often not the help people need.
