Over kill anyone? He's a petty thief, most likely a druggie who needs some fast cash. He may not look like a stereotypical druggie, but in reality many don't. And believe it or not many phone snatches are inside jobs; the 'victim' has insurance and get's a new phone, the 'stolen' phone is sold.
