Australian Christian Leader Says Smoking Healthier Than Being Gay

Remarks by Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) Jim Wallace at a debate with Green party leader Christine Milne at the University of Tasmania today are inspiring anger from LGBT advocates, The Age reports:

WallaceAnswering a question from a student on the relevance of his views, he said health statistics among the gay community were worse than those for smokers.

"I think we're going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community's own statistics for its health - which it presents when it wants more money for health - are that is has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years," he told the audience.

"The life of smokers is reduced by something like seven to 10 years and yet we tell all our kids at school they shouldn't smoke."

After the debate, Mr Wallace said the figures saddened him.

"But what I'm saying is we need to be aware that the homosexual lifestyle carries these problems and ... normalising the lifestyle by the attribution of marriage, for instance, has to be considered in what it does encouraging people into it," he said.

Tasmania came one step closer to passing marriage equality last week when its lower house approved the measure.

  2. Perhaps if people as ignorant and callous as you didn't oppose homosexuality so vehemently, then the suicide rate would be lower...

That level of ignorance just defies logic.

  3. I hope people who believe that smoke 10 packs a day. That'll be one more way to cull the herd of ignorant bigots.

  4. Really, Mr. Wallace. I always wonder why you don't produce those "statistics" that you evangelical toilet bowls are always citing. It's probably because they either don't exist or are not quite as dire as you say they are.

  5. What a dope! I'm glad all the idiots of this world are coming out and telling us what they really believe. It makes it easier to tell who's who.

  6. Fake Science--here's one of the sources homophobes quote-I should also mention Cameron's son is gay (from JoeMyGod):"If you look across the data sets you see that homosexuals have a host of mental problems, disproportionate physical problems, they don't live as long, and they are disproportionately involved in drug abuse and criminality. That would seem to indicate that that is a lifestyle that may reasonably be considered mentally disturbed – [a] disorder. Yet, it isn't. It is surprising that such a wildly defective study, and one that actually proved the exact opposite of what it claimed to have proved has survived so long." - Discredited psychologist Paul Cameron, speaking to the Christian Post.

Cameron is referring to a 1957 study that was cited when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1973. Cameron's claim that gay men only live to age 42 is still frequently quoted by anti-gay hate groups, even though he came up with that figure by averaging the ages of men he found in AIDS obituaries in the 1980s. Which is like saying that the average child with a brain tumor dies at age eight, therefore all children have a life expectancy of eight years. Earlier this year Cameron called for imprisoning gay people in a statement that also accused President Obama of being secretly gay himself.

  11. This is the most rediculas thing I have ever herd in my life. I don't believe there arre any statisticks behind this. For one thing I'm pretty sure this guy is trying to base his conclusion on the factor of sin. If he were a true beliver of Jesus and all that he did for this world he would know that smoking more so being addicted and dependent on anything is also a sin and God forgives us our sins no mater what they are. Just as when caine killed his brother able over jeliousy God still loved and protected him. No sin is greater than another in Gods eyes. Be a true Christian or get rid of the lable

  12. Oh and I should also add this guy and people like him make a bad name for christians. And I understand why we are treated the way we are because of ignorent people like him but I want people to know NOT ALL CHRISTIANS are ignorent bigots as a lot of you are saying. Don't burn the baset cuz of a few bad eggs. True christians love everyone and do not judge they pray and seek answers from God they don't see them selfs as better because they know they are not

  13. "And being Christian is dangerous for your intelligence and sanity."

Atheism is a prejudice, as your post demonstrates. The answer to one prejudice, like homophobia, is not another prejudice, like atheism.

You are no different, Steve, from Jim Wallace. You just hate a different group of people, but you are equally dishonest.

  14. Atheism is prejudice? I don't think so. Atheists aren't as into religious folk as religious folk are into atheists and everyone else who doesn't fit their world views.

Anyway, this guy is yet another homophobe hiding behind blatant lies and religion. These creeps need to be exposed for what they are as their lies are the reason why homophobia exists in the way it does. Every single time they lie, they need to be exposed by the media/journalists/LGBT groups/etc.

  15. Higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide.
Do Australian citizens carry a national ID stating a person is gay which is discovered after a person committed suicide. Or they go after the families and friends of suicide victims asking them this important question.
They can't do any control experiment since suicide is a relatively rare phenomenon.

  16. How is atheism a prejudice, We Are Here?? I don't have a religious belief at all (atheist) but am still fine with people having one if it makes them feel better. Where is the prejudice in that? Atheist views just don't believe in a saviour or some being "creating" our world, it's not an attack on those that do believe in that.

You're correct in one prejudice not being an answer to another, but you aren't making the point very well here.

  17. So much of the problems he cites: suicides, drug use, etc. are rooted in the constant message to young gay men and women that they are "different," "other," and according to some, "damned." Things like normalization, things like the right to be married, raise families (if you so choose), and the security of being safe in your job and employment reduce depression, reduce hopelessness, and reduce health issues, idiot. Seeing what you want and making Christians who actually BELIEVE in what Jesus taught (vs. what evangelicals and Christianist conservatives WANT) look bad.

  18. Welcome to Australia's own brand of religious fucktardary, the ACL. Seriously, even amongst normal christians, these guys are known as pedlars of hate and damaging to christianity. They are funded by a small group of right wing christians, but because of the money behind them, get a massive amount of attention paid to them by politicians here. They are the real reason why gay marriage is not yet legal...

  20. The stats ARE true.

The REASON for them is simple, constant, unrelenting oppression.

Posted by: "The Gay" | Sep 5, 2012 6:55:16 PM

  21. Yep, I stopped smoking years ago, now if I could only stop being gay. I mean, how hard can it be? There are so many ex-gays out there. LOL!!!!!!

    Posted by: andrew | Sep 5, 2012 11:35:25 PM

  22. Why is it that many of my gay friends do smoke? I don't think he's analyzed that data yet.

Posted by: Diogenes Arktos | Sep 6, 2012 8:03:13 AM

  23. Let's assume that the "statistics" offered by Mr. Wallace are correct and homosexuals do have higher rates of drug-use and suicide. Well, are you surprised?! Considering that they are constantly abused, harassed, denied basic privileges, etc, I'm surprised the rates are much higher!
