NEWS: Coke In Pyongyang, Hantavirus In Yosemite, Mitt In Action

Towleroad-roadicon Isaac's aftermath.

Towleroad-roadicon Mitt ... helps? ... a woman who's lost her house to the storm.

S-RREED-largeTowleroad-roadicon The revenant Ralph Reed.

Towleroad-roadicon Augmented cell phones will soon be able to screen for HIV:

The gadget, called Smartscope, is a small 1-millimeter (0.04-inch) microscope and light which clips over a smartphone's camera.

A standard chip with a blood sample then slides into the gadget in front of the microscope. Next, a special phone programme photographs the sample and analyses the cells.

The team hopes that trials in clinics may start next year ...

The new technology is destined for AIDS treatment in remote communities in South Africa and Swaziland, where clinics often don't have the technology to do these tests effectively.

Towleroad-roadicon A lonely Greek gay boy's imaginary friend comes to life, looking rather like Maria Callas circa 1972.

Towleroad-roadicon Two dead, thousands at risk from hantavirus after a stay in Yosemite:

Yosemite officials earlier this week shut down all 91 of the insulated tent cabins after finding deer mice, which carry the disease and can burrow through holes the size of pencil erasers, nesting between the [cabins'] double walls.

Park authorities said on Friday that they had contacted approximately 3,000 parties of visitors who stayed in the tent cabins since mid-June, advising them to seek immediate medical attention if they have symptoms of hantavirus.

Towleroad-roadicon Coca-Cola reaches Pyongyang. Freedom can't be far behind.

Towleroad-roadicon California's John Perez, the first openly-gay speaker of a state legislature, to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

Towleroad-roadicon Frank Bruni on the RNC:

... you certainly didn’t see anyone openly gay on the stage in Tampa. More to the point, you didn’t hear mention of gays and lesbians. Scratch that: Mike Huckabee, who has completed a ratings-minded transformation from genial pol to dyspeptic pundit, made a derisive reference to President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage. We were thus allowed a fleeting moment inside the tent, only to be flogged and sent back out into the cold.

ZimmermanIt was striking not because a convention or political party should make a list of minority groups and dutifully put a check mark beside each ... It was striking because the Republicans went so emphatically far, in terms of stagecraft and storytelling, to profess inclusivenes ...

Towleroad-roadicon Republicans to descend on DNC for counter-convention, because ... they're unhappy with the one they just had?

... as many as 50 “communicators” ... will be stationed right outside the gates of the Time Warner Cable Arena. And there will be plenty of gimmicks and props, including “You Build It” Legos, “You Build It” Monopoly and plenty of Kleenex “because breaking up is hard to do.”

Towleroad-roadicon You've heard folkie Roy Zimmerman's not-quite-hit "Defenders of Marriage"? Or his "Romney Mitt: The Demon Barber Of Wall Street"? Well -- do, if you haven't. And AFTER THE JUMP, find out what he learned at the RNC ...

  1. This screening of HIV by cell phones is moronic and dangerous. Firstly, HIV does not cause AIDS. Secondly, it will cause alarm when there needn't be any.

I'm amazed that towleroad seems to cast an uncritical eye over these ridiculous things.

  2. Jason, I invited you quite a while ago to go ahead and get yourself infected with HIV and prove to all of us that it does not cause AIDS. Your only response at the time was to respond that some doctor (unnamed) had already performed such an experiment. (See http://www.towleroad.com/2012/07/bone-marrow-transplants-said-to-eliminate-hiv-in-two-patients.html)

I think it's time for you to put up or shut up.

  3. It doesn't screen for HIV, it's a mobile CD4 cell counter that would monitor disease progression in people who have been previously tested and diagnosed with HIV.

  6. California did not have the first openly gay speaker. In fact, Rhode Island has this distinction. Gordon Fox was elected as Rhode Island House speaker in 2010. He is openly gay led the unsuccessful effort for marriage equality after he was elected to the post.

think progress has the more scandalous headline

"Romney former company under investigation for tax evasion"

    LOL schadenfreude

  8. RYANINWYO: Someone has already done this; if you can't find out who it is via a simple web search, I'm not surprised Jason totally ignores you.

  9. I thought Romney did not look well at the convention. Maybe it had to do with the investigation of hedge fund tax practices. Or he has heard that somehow his tax returns are going to leak out. Something is going on.

Not to worry. He can always leave the country and has plenty of emergency cash stashed overseas.

  10. Jason, as someone living with it, I feel entitled to tell you to go f*ck yourself ou ignorant sh!tbag.

  11. Congratulations to California Assembly Speaker Perez. However, the ceiling of being the first out gay person to be elected head of a state legislative body [regardless of the title] was broken by the late Allan Spear in 1992 when he was elected president of the Minnesota State Senate, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. Under his leadership, Minnesota became the first state to ban employment discrimination based on both sexual orientation and gender identity when it passed the Human Rights Act in 1993. Thank you.

  12. "Republicans to descend on DNC for counter-convention, because ... they're unhappy with the one they just had?"

Nope, they're simply giving the Democrats a taste of their own medicine. Haven't you noticed that there have been radical Democrat protesters at EVERY Republican public rally and event? THAT'S what the Obama administration will go down in history for: Having more protesters crash Republican events than any other Democrat administration before it.

  13. @? Nice try. This stuff has been going on for years and the GOP are pretty good at it too. Quit with the victim card. You know it didn't start with Obama, so why are you trying to blame him?

  14. @JASON I agree with person above: put up or shut up.

It's one thing for you to come here and be stupid.

It's another thing for you to come here and be stupid AND irresponsible.

Give us the facts or get lost, little boy.
