Romney on Omission of Troops from His Speech: 'You Talk About the Things You Think are Important'

Mitt Romney was asked by FOX News anchor Bret Baier about his failure to mention or praise the troops in his speech at the Republican National Convention.

Answered Romney:

"When you give a speech you don't go through a laundry list, you talk about the things you think are important."

Romney adds that he did talk about his commitment to a strong military ("He plans to increase military spending by $2.1 trillion over the next ten year," Think Progress notes): "I didn't use the word troops. I used the word military. I think they refer to the same thing.

  1. For Kyle and DyneX, the video (not sure if it will post here): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e59egz0el7c and if it doesn't post here, can search youtube for "Mitt Romney Sits Down For a Chat With a Gay Veteran". It's not very long, only 1:54, but it's painful. Mitt Romney doesn't believe what he's mouthing, so why is he saying it?

  2. Romney is just following his basic game plan. He thinks that if he sticks to the economy he'll win, but if he talks about what the Republicans will really do he'll loose.

  8. What's revealing about Romney's comment, in light of him saying that he talked about what was important to him, is that he said he had supported a strong military and thought that was the same as supporting the troupes. It isn't - "supporting the troupes" should mean caring for those who were injured and keeping them from being injured, which includes not deploying them unless that is really necessary and justifiable. A "strong military" by contrast simply means making sure there are lots of people in it equipped with the latest "toys."

Whatever Romney might have actually meant, his statement was really incredibly callous. It's no surprise given how he treated the family dog that was allegedly strapped to the roof of his car, not to mention the "haircut" he and his gang gave to a younger student thought to be gay. Has he fundamentally changed? If not, why would anyone want him to be our president?
