Tommy Thompson Retains Staffer Who Sent Gay-Baiting Email in Attempt to Smear Tammy Baldwin: VIDEO

Last week Brian Nemoir, the political director for the U.S. Senate campaign of former Gov. Tommy Thompson, sent out a gay-baiting email and tweet which contained a link to a video of Thompson's opponent, out Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, dancing at Madison's Gay Pride festival in an attempt to mock her before she gave her DNC speech on 'Heartland Values'.

The Journal Sentinel reported:

"Clearly, there's no one better positioned to talk 'heartland values' than Tammy," Nemoir wrote in his email, which was obtained by

The email included a link to a video of Baldwin dancing in 2010 on Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus with the costumed disco band VO5 playing the "Wonder Woman" theme. Baldwin, wearing sunglasses, dances on stage with the band and at the end hugs a dancer who is dressed like the comic book hero Wonder Woman.

Thompson was asked about Nemoir's gay-baiting by reporters yesterday. Thompson said he thought it was inappropriate but still retains Nemoir on staff "in a different role," Think Progress reports. "Somebody else has taken over communications with the press."

  1. The new generic GOP message appears to be, "we don't care if public opinion is shifting fast, we can still hurt you, faggots."

  2. Disappointing. But this show of homophobia is something that can easily backfire badly on the Thompson campaign. Let's hope that it does.

  3. I was at the event where Tammy danced with Wonder Woman. The band VO5 plays at a lot of local summer events and is really quite quite good. The whole thing was quite tame. But of course, they want to get the gay angle in there.

But maybe we should talk about Tommy's "heartland values", like his public drunkenness when governor at a morning event in Green Bay, or the fact that his wife refused to live with him for all but two years of his three terms as governor, or that she didn't go with him to Washington when he got a cabinet position from W... or how about when he tried to appoint his mistress as the head of a state department when he was governor. Yeah, that's the family values crowd for you.
