NFL Player Matt Birk Makes Anti-Gay Ad for Catholic Church and Equality Advocate Chris Kluwe Responds: VIDEO

In a video for the Minnesota Catholic Conference, Baltimore Raven center Matt Birk doubles down on the anti-gay sentiment he expressed in an op-ed for the Star Tribune this week in support of Minnesota's upcoming ballot measure that would constitutionally ban same-sex marriage.

C_kluweMinnesota Viking and equality advocate Chris Kluwe responds with six reasons on his blog, this being the last one:

The only impact same-sex marriage will have on your children is if one of them turns out to be gay and cannot get married. What will you do (and I ask this honestly) if one or more of your kids ends up being gay? Will you love them any less? What will your actions speak to them, 15 years from now, when they ask you why they can’t enjoy the same relationship that you and your wife have now? And if your response is “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it”, well, for a lot of people that bridge is here right now. They’re trying to cross it, but the way is barred, and I will do my best to tear those barricades down any way I can because I believe that we are infringing on the free will of other human beings by denying them their basic right to live free of oppression. I love my daughters for their minds and their personalities, not for who they love as adults. That’s none of my damn business, and I will support them in life no matter who they want to marry.

Ultimately, while your letter is respectful and polite (and I’ve tried to keep mine the same way, no SPARKLEPONIES in this one), I remain unconvinced by any logical reasoning you have so far brought to bear on the subject. I encourage you to keep speaking out, as we should never be afraid to espouse our views, but from a rational standpoint I simply cannot agree with discrimination against a subset of our citizenry.

  1. What a response!
    Now that's a fierce advocate. :)
Score 7 for Humanity for Kluwe.

  2. Kluwe ROCKS, and he's spot-ON!.

yeah. you may have a gay kid or two, Birk. And they've heard your words. better change your stance unless you're adamant about attending their funeral.

  3. And today's DUR moment is brought to you once again by the Catholic Church, NOM, and special guest start Matt Birk.

  4. check out the facebook pages for Matt Birk and his football charity - the comments from his "supporters" are among the most gallingly offensive things you'll read all day.

a world of ignorance, hatred, and the usual brand of intellectual dishonesty.. you know, the kind where someone says "you liberals are hateful! he's allowed to have his beliefs! you're forcing him to blah blah blah"

    No, and f**k off.

when oh WHEN will people realize that being anti-gay doesn't make you "immune" from having gay family members???

  5. @HadEnoughBS: I heartily concur.

    @Jason: "Gay marriage affirms monogamy."
This will come as a shock to Dan Savage.

@JT: replace "Catholic" with "LDS" and it sounds like Romney

  6. Chris Kluwe has really gained my respect. As has Brendon Ayanbedejo. As a remnant of some really ugly experiences in school I've always thought of "jocks" as @$$holes, crude and casually cruel. I stereotyped them the same way I felt they had stereotyped me, turned them into some "other" who could be easily dismissed.

And I was wrong, just as people who reduce gay people to some stereotypical, monolithic "other" are wrong. So I thank them for showing me that.

  7. His brother-in-law is gay. I don't know if this affected his opinion of fairness and equality to all. Somehow I think he has always been progressive. And a GREAT writer! I've been following this guy from the beginning of his letter to that MD legislator. Count me as one of his fans for his politics and writings!

Oh, I guess I could check his football team's scores from time-to-time. :-)

  8. If you are a religious person or a person that stands behind the Bible this is what your response would be. The one book that you build your foundation on is why you have to stand behind your beliefs. These are two groups that will never agree. To bash a group of people based on their personal beliefs is the same thing to bash someone on their sexual orientation.

  9. what a (#%&@$)&* idiot. Deeply disappointed that a Raven could espouse such idiotic nonsense. Since he did this for the Catholic Church and MN, let's look at the wonderful Popes of past and the values they professed. Pope Siricius (384–399), who, tradition suggests, left his wife and children to become Pope.(wikipedia) The number of Siricius' children is unknown. He issued a decree in 385 that priests should stop cohabiting with their wives. Pope Pius II (1458–1464) had at least two illegitimate children (one in Strasbourg and another one in Scotland), born before he entered the clergy. (Catholic Encyclopedia). Pope Innocent VIII (1484–1492) had at least two illegitimate children, born before he entered the clergy.(Catholic Encyclopedia) According to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, he "openly practised nepotism in favour of his children". Girolamo Savonarola chastised him for his worldly ambitions.(Roberto Ridolfi) The title Padre della patria (Father of the Fatherland) was suggested for him, precisely with suggestions that he may have fathered as many as 16 illegitimate children.(Roberto) Pope Julius II (1503–1513) had at least one illegitimate daughter, Felice della Rovere (born in 1483, twenty years before his election). Some sources indicate that he had two additional illegitimate daughters, who died in their childhood.(Giluliano della Rovere) Furthermore, some (possibly libellous) reports of his time accused him of sodomy. According to the schismatic Council of Pisa in 1511, he was a "sodomite covered with shameful ulcers.(Robert Aldrich Gary Woltherspoon) Pope Paul III (1534–1549) held off ordination (The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church) in order to continue his promiscuous lifestyle, fathering four illegitimate children (three sons and one daughter) by his mistress Silvia Ruffini. He broke his relations with her ca. 1513. Pope Paul II (1464–1471) is popularly alleged to have died of a heart attack while in a sexual act with a page.(Karlheinz Deschner, Storia criminale del cristianesimo (tomo VIII), Ariele, Milano, 2007, pag. 216. Nigel Cawthorne, Das Sexleben der Päpste. Die Skandalchronik des Vatikans, Benedikt Taschen Verlag, Köln, 1999, pag. 171. Hans Kühner, Das Imperium der Päpste, Classen Verlag, Zürich 1977, pag. 254. Ferdinand Seibt, Bohemia Sacra: Das Christentum in Bohmen 973-1973, Padagogischer Verlag Schwann, Düsseldorf 1974, pag. 320) Pope Sixtus IV (1471–1484) was alleged to have awarded gifts and benefices to court favourites in return for sexual favours. Giovanni Sclafenato was created a cardinal by Sixtus IV for "ingenuousness, loyalty,...and his other gifts of soul and body",(Aldrich, Robert and Witherspoon) according to the papal epitaph on his tomb.(diary records of Stefano Infessura (1440-1500). Retrieved 2011-10-18.)Such claims were recorded by Stefano Infessura, in his Diarium urbis Romae. Pope Julius III (1550–1555) was alleged to have had a long affair with Innocenzo Ciocchi del Monte. The Venetian ambassador at that time reported that Innocenzo shared the pope's bedroom and bed.[47] According to The Oxford Dictionary of Popes, "naturally indolent, he devoted himself to pleasurable pursuits with occasional bouts of more serious activity".(The Oxford Dictionary of Popes). Matt, take a look at your Catholic popes and their many indiscretions. Are the crimes commited by these alleged straight, genderless, abstinate men of God who you want your children, and children of the Catholic church to emulate. You should familiarize yourself with John 8:7.

  10. What makes me laugh is that his local bishop just bought a place in Italy with his gay partner and the local Cardinal Archbishop is know to frequent leather bars. So it's just another straight guy being mislead by a couple of closet cases.

  11. Why doesn't Matt Birk make an anti priest pedophile video to really try to protect children?

  12. Chris Kluwe HAS BEEN "BRAINWASHED" BY "gay-activists." HE HAD BETTER HOPED HE IS NOT "gay-bashed."

  13. i think the left and gay agenda supporters think everyone concerned with or against gay agendas is religious. you discount the fact that some of us read science and psychology and we realize you are as truthful as fox news and you dont notice nor do you care.
science is still split on born gay!! search 'SCIENCE NATURE VS. NURTURE DEBATE'!!!!! less than 1 in 20 are gay yet gay agenda followers think its 1 in 7! the gay agenda is combating blind religion with a blind religion of its own and the gay followers/sheep are the ones that suffer because they are stupid and indoctrinated, not informed like they should be. its horrific to watch and even worse to talk to a gay supporter. they sound like they get their info from sean hannity and limbaugh. its literally that fake and distorted and deceitful!!!!!!!!

im a non religious moderate who is concerned with all this internet and data that a false religion can still be created before our eyes. if it was more truthful i wouldnt be so bothered by it.
