Oprah Asks KONY 2012's Jason Russell if He's Gay: VIDEO

Russell

Following the revelation that his group Invisible Children was financially tied to anti-gay Christian fundamentalist groups, KONY 2012 co-founder Jason Russell's personal life came under scrutiny, a scrutinization that was magnified after an apparent mental breakdown, in which he marched back and forth in a nude rant at a California intersection.

Yesterday, Russell appeared on Oprah's Next Chapter to talk about his breakdown. Oprah asked him if he's gay:

“Yeah, I’ve heard those rumors...In the video I was snapping my finger up and down. I grew up in theater. My parents started a large children’s theater organization, so I am animated. I am theatrical. That's me by nature. So when you take me, times it by ten, I don't know what was in my head but it was controlling my body and making me do really strange things."

Russell says he hardly remembers anything about the episode on the sidewalk: "I think I was trying to ask cars to take me to the airport, in my underwear."

Russell says it took him two weeks to come back to himself.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. I can't believe all twits here wringing their hands over Ms. Winfrey making an innocuous comment about this man's sexual orientation. They'll probably all vote for Mittens.

@DAVID IN HOUSTON My card expired. Where do I go to renew it?

  2. "Russell says it took him two weeks to come back to himself." --The cruel evil inner me would ask Russell, Are you sure you're back, doesn't just a little piece of you yearn for an episode by the side of the road?

  4. He is gay...and he was a queen on crystal meth. This makes way more sense than his "theatrical" explanation.

  7. I hate to sound trite. But the more I look and listen to Jason Russell, the more my gaydar goes bonkers. He DOESN'T answer the question which actually makes me respect him more because I sense he possibly didn't want to lie, unlike say miss mendacious mitt romney. If mannerisms can indict someone, Jason Russell is a bonafide member of the LGBT community whether he has activated his membership or not. For those tired, baseless attackers like Anastascia, Oprah asked about the "gay rumors". She and Gayle have addressed the gay issue on more than one ocassion. As a biased fan, I am more than satisfied with their response. And if she had happened to "turn gay", which she has not, she certainly has more than enough reasons to considering how she had been abused by men in her young life. She is a wonderful voice for the world, and I, for one, "I am glad that she is in the world."

  9. He's not gay, just his body. It has a mind of its own.

  10. I believe, without a doubt that he DOES (or should have) answered the question. It becomes our business when his organization is funded by anti gay groups. This whole 'argument' about his sexuality being only his business is just bullsh#%. It's exasperating how incredibly stupid fellow queers can be when they defend this type of guy.

  11. Closet queen in denial!
That interview will do NOTHING to repair his “image”. He’s already proven to the world that he is a CON man and a crazy one as well. Who knows, he’s probably a drug addict, too.

Meanwhile, can't wait to get my t-shirt with:

"I'm not Gay. I am Theatrical!"

  12. What is this bs about, "an obviously closted gay man"? It is in no way "obvious" that he is either gay (perhaps he's a little more effeminate than some?) or closeted (which presumes the former). When will gay people, themselves, get over the foolish stereotypes that have kept us 2nd class citizens for so long? Don't you see the implicit attitude that it's bad to be gay, bad to be closeted, bad to make a choice about how you want to live? Get over yourself, already!

  13. Oprah did the most you could expect her to do without seeming (too) trashy on the topic of his sexuality and his sexual orientation isn't really the central story surrounding him anyway.

Having said that, his answer was clearly evasive and if you watch a lot of his other videos it's obvious that he's closeted to at least some extent.

While it's only personal speculation on my part, I'd posit that it seems like the driving force in his life is to over compensate for his sexual orientation rather than to save children. Not that he doesn't care about the children at all, but it just seems like someone who constantly styles them self to look camera-ready/preppy hipster with intermittent blond hair and fashion frames and who also casts himself at the center of activist videos that are far more reminiscent of boy band music videos than they are calls to action, is far too self referential and narcissistic to be pushed to prioritize something outside of them self unless it was about obtaining approval.

The kind of drive he exhibits has to come from some form of perceived personal shortcoming and if he's religious then it sort of all falls into place. After all, he cried as he explained that he'd made 11 other films and he was at a loss about what to do to affect change; the change he wanted anyway.

He's absolutely aligned himself with a whole lot of really anti-gay, right wing organizations and in that sense he resembles a fairly standard gay republican with all their yearning to appease the oppressor even despite the fact that he's closeted.

While there's also a limit to what cliches indicate, he sat on a stage at a conservative church university in the midwest and said that his dream had always been to direct film adaptations of musicals, like Baz Luhrmann. I mean, it's not rocket science.

He seems like a likeable, nice enough guy and seeing anyone battle the kind of neurotic self loathing with which he seems plagued is always a sad thing to see.

  15. WHAT A HOT MESS ! I don't want him to be gay - we don't need any more idiots on our side but, yes, I do believe he is a homo unfortunately.

Another self hater ! This is getting tiresome. It's time these "men" grew some balls. Not just this weak piece of Sh4t but ALL the gay men still in the closet, the ones still married to women and the ones claiming to be bisexual. It's PATHETIC.

  16. Oh why not go the whole way of anti-gaydom and simply answer: "No."

That's what all the other self loathing $hits do.

  17. A simple "no" would be the answer. A response that requires an explanation is a great big "YES".

  18. I really don't like this man and have occasionally have gone through a process to make sure it is not due to some unconscious bias or homophobia. I normally don't feel judgmental about noteworthy or even closeted folks but he just wrankles me. I am not even sure why he is doing this publicity tour, when it was publicity that got him there in the first place. Thank you for listening.

  19. So was it snapping of the fingers or was it "jazz hands"? If it was "jazz hands", then yes, definitely he is gay...case closed.

  20. Granted, society, current events, and everyday occurrences do play a major role, but doesn’t it make you wonder if you’re on top of life, because you’re successfully calling the shots, or life’s on top of you, stealing your happiness and satisfaction, making you follow where it decides to take you
