Paul Ryan Tells 'Focus on the Family' He and Romney Will Block Equality for Gay People

Right Wing Watch has posted audio of a pledge from Paul Ryan to Focus on the Family president Jim Daly that the Romney-Ryan administration will fight gay equality.

P_ryanSays Ryan when asked his thoughts about marriage:

It’s the foundation for society and for family for thousands of years. First of all, Mitt Romney and I — I’ll just say it, it’s worth repeating — we believe marriage is between one man and one woman, that’s number one. Number two, you know where I come from we had one of those amendments in Wisconsin, I was a big supporter of it and we passed it like you say, where it’s put on the ballot it passes. The second point is, President Obama gave up defending the Defense of Marriage Act in the courts, I mean, not only is this decision to abandon this law the wrong decision, it passed in a bipartisan manner, it is very troubling because it undermines not only traditional marriage but it contradicts our system of government. It’s not the president’s job to pick and choose which laws he likes. A Romney administration will protect traditional marriage and the rule of law and we will provide the Defense of Marriage Act the proper defense in the courts that it deserves.

Not a surprise, obviously. Just a reminder.

  2. Article II Section 1:

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I think that pretty well covers the President's refusal to execute unconstitutional statutes.

  4. I have admit i: I find it hard to loathe him, even though he definitely is loathsome, because I find him so damn sexy, in a perverse way. That's terrible, I know. Could I really be that shallow? "Be gone, handsome devil, be gone! Enough with your evil blue-eyed sorcery!"

  5. @ RICH :
Yeah, sure, "defend the Constitution of the USA "....

    But not defend unconstitutional laws.

    Reply from JFT in Dublin:

    Are you serious ?
Ryan, in the immortal words of an English politician, "has something of the night about him."

That about sums up Ryan ;there is definitely another agenda going on......and I am totally convinced that the agenda is that of Opus Dei.

  7. Are there any log cabin republicans who would like to comment now that this disclosure has been, I'd love to hear from them.

  8. @JackTwist...you're absolutely right in every way. Personally, I find that it's very comfortable coming to Towleroad and I enjoy reading the thoughts of my gay brothers & sisters. It's warm & fuzzy here.
Unfortunately, it accomplishes very little. When are we going to take this to another level? The courts eventually will work for us...yes. But, I'll be dead & gone by then.
We need one gay lunatic...or ten thousand bitchy pissed off queens on the streets...to bring it to a screeching halt. Where do I sign up?

  10. If one were to construct an amendment to the Constitution based on a literal reading of the Bible it might well contain the following stipulations:

    1. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)

    2. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines, in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)

    3. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)

    4. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)

    5. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)

    6. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe, and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)

    7. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)

Perhaps a more contemporary standard measures up better against the ancient near eastern tradition than one might have expected.

  14. I really like him on The Munsters, where he played Eddie... but Mr. Ryan doesn't seem to understand the the President's job is to "uphold the U.S. Constitution". You see, DOMA is unconstitutional, in that it's contradictory to the Equal Protection clause. President Obama is actually DOING HIS JOB by not defending such a blatantly discriminatory law. This will go to the Supreme Court where it will be struck down. If Mr. Ryan cannot seem to grasp the BASICS of our Constitution, then he has absolutely NO BUSINESS running for office.

  15. Please. He is a toad. He is pandering to the worst level of our society. They will lose (Mittens and Paulie) and their constiuents will cry "foul!" ...Hetero marriages are really the ones in trouble and he knows it..the divorce rate is staggering...and WE are the ones who are tearing it apart?...Double "Pullleeeazzze"
Go away trolls.....shoo!.. Go party with Bachmann and her nelly husband. Idiots.

  16. In addition to being inherently repugnant, his comments are very, very short-sighted if he has longer-term political aspirations (as, say, Sarah Palin once had). Opinions on marriage equality continue to change rapidly. And they are only changing in one direction. His current views, which will part of his permanent record, will be poison in 2016.

But, on the bright side, maybe after 4 years' training, Ryan can get his marathon time down to under 2 hours.

  17. Ah, yes, Mitt believes that traditional marriage is between one man and one woman. Except when he thinks with his religious brain, the it is one man and many women. Ah, the duplicity and obfuscation of the right-wing who must pander to the mutants who voe for them.

  18. why do these f*****s deny the number of times marriage has changed over the centuries? the most current anthropological & archeological research shows that monogamy is relativity new given the millennia of man's existence. AND how do they explain away the hundreds of wives & concubines their revered David & Solomon had? their Jesus didn't been say you could have only one wife. Just that you couldn't divorce...

  19. Someone should ask Mr Fiscal Responsibility how much $$ is wasted by the justice department fighting in courts about laws that while may have been popular at the time are actually unconstitutional (ie DOMA). In a twist of irony, I can see the argument for the type of libertarianism that this guy is supposed to espouse - it would be awesome if the government said "hey, let's trim a bunch of fat by not paying lawyers to battle out junk laws."

Too bad the republican party has been overtaken by the religious right- it made a devil's bargain in making fundamentalist christians more politically minded. They won a large organized voting bloc that can be coaxed to the polls with cries of moral outrage, but now the demands are becoming contradictory to the old more libertarian in general republican party. I think those libertarians are going to end up voting for Ron Paul or staying home, which will be a big benefit for Obama

  22. As has been noted today and in previous columns, it's been rumored that Ryan is gay or bisexual. I just hope that some brave D.C. hustler will expose Ryan for what he is, a self-loathing gay man who attacks other gays in order to gain power for himself.

  23. What they believe doesn't matter. Everyone has the right to believe in their own religion, and no position of power gives him the right to change that. If he doesn't comprehend that, I forsee him and the president impeached, imprisoned, and/or worse before the end of their first year in office.
