John Sununu Suggests Colin Powell's Endorsement of Obama was Racism: VIDEO

Romney surrogate John Sununu applauds Colin Powell for what he says is a racist endorsement of Obama:

MORGAN: Final question, Colin Powell decided to opt for President Obama again, despite apparently still being a Republican. Is it time he left the party, do you think?

SUNUNU: I'm not sure how important that is. I do like the fact that Colin Powell's boss, George Herbert Walker Bush, has endorsed Mitt Romney all along. And frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama?

MORGAN: What reason would that be?

SUNUNU: Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you are proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.

Writes DailyKos' Jed Lewison: "I guess the logical implication here is that Sununu is only endorsing Romney because he's white, right? If you ask me, I think the real story here is that Romneyland is scared to death of talking about the Richard Mourdock story—in other words, the rape thing wasn't working out for Romney, so they decided to give the race thing a try."

  1. The GOP is nothing if not predictable...

  2. translation: "I don't like black people"
Thanks, Republicans, for continuing to prove the rest of us right.

  3. Of course when Bush endorses Romney, that has NOTHING to do with him being of the same race. Nothing. Or when Sununu endorses him. Nothing to do with race at all.

    Posted by: KevinVT | Oct 26, 2012 10:10:03 AM

  4. this is why when you ask some right-wingers why they object to Obama they say "he's a Muslim!, He's a socialist AND a commie!"

right. you can't point to a specific of policy. you can't state ANYTHING legit. so you say "oh, he's a _________" and then project your own bigotry onto others.

"you're voting for him because he's black" means "i'm not voting for him because he's black"

    Posted by: LittleKiwi | Oct 26, 2012 10:17:27 AM

  5. That 47-48% of the electorate is voting for Romney is racism pure and simple.

The man is a snake oil salesman. A liar whose opinions are as shifting as the winds.

And the man said himself it will take 8-10 years to pull this country out of financial trouble. But he'll only grant Obama 4?

A vote for Romney is a vote for white. Period.

  6. Seriously Towleroad your headlines are often as biased/incorrect as those we see on Fox News. Sununu doesn't say Powell's endorsement is "racist". He suggests it may be based on racial pride. I understand that. I remember, my Irish Catholic relatives proudly going to the polls in 1960 and voting for JFK, because they wanted to see one of their own in the White House. I guess Andy just likes to stir up the pot or watch all the knee jerk reactions.

    Posted by: andrew | Oct 26, 2012 10:39:06 AM

  7. Andrew is correct.

Even though I hate Sununu with a passion his suggestion isn't that provocative. If you are a life long Republican why are you leaving the party twice to support a Democrat? What is it about that particular Democrat that causes you to desert your own party? Or what is it about your party's nominee that makes you support the other party's nominee?

One could also ask many working-class union member White men why they vote Republican when it is NOT in their interests?

The definition of racism has REALLY undergone some revisions over the last 50 to 60 years. Racism used to be a feeling of racial superiority, but now it's just having a feeling of racial hatred. Well, neither one of those applies to Colin Powell.

Believe me, if Herman Caine was the Republican nominee and Tim Kaine (of Virginia) was the Democratic nominee you might still see Colin Powell go for the Democrat. And 90% of Black folks would support Kaine over Caine....well, 85% of Blacks would stick with the White Democrat.

  8. Why does anyone care what this bloated slug with a bad mercan has to say?

  9. People hated George Bush. The things said about the man were vile, disgusting, and wrong. You know what though? They never attacked Laura. They left her alone.

The absolute vile, disgusting, and downright disturbing comments about the First Lady, the first First Lady to ever be the recipient of such hatred, make it quite clear: racism is alive and well in the Republican party.

  10. @KP05:

"the first First Lady to ever be the recipient of such hatred".

I agree somewhat. I'm sure Hillary Clinton would say that Michelle wasn't the first. The GOP didn't exactly throw Hillary a lot of parties when the Clintons were in the White House. Nancy Reagan was also on the receiving end of some nastiness. Though the things they say about Michelle are much more mean spirited.

  11. mary todd lincoln, lady bird johnson, and a half dozen other i remembered and forgot just as quickly also were treated badly, some justly so. but with hilary clinton still in dc, to say that michelle obama is singularly reviled is just wrong. that there are racist slurs, however is more than usually disgusting.

  13. Colin Powell should leave the Republican Party and start a new one. He and someone like Tom Brokaw could co-found a new moderate party and they would give moderate Republicans somewhere to go.

Posted by: We need a third party | Oct 26, 2012 2:01:46 PM

  14. The big issue is that a lot of white people hate Obama just because he's black. When are we going to talk about that, Sununu?

    Posted by: Jack M | Oct 26, 2012 2:56:52 PM

  15. Just heard that after Sean called Romney a "snake oil salesman" in a previous comment, the real snake oil salesmen are trying to find Sean to demand an apology! When the real snake oil salesmen take advantage of people, they do it in moderation - just a small worthless bottle sold at a small, but still inflated, price.

Romney, of course, would never think of himself as being a mere snake oil salesman. He thinks he is Harold Hill - the fast-talking guy in The Music Man. Here's a sample:

And that's how Republicans get votes - selling "family values" and "what about the children".

  16. The Romney campaign is obviously in disarray. How can they let such an obnoxious and vile specimen out there as their spokesman.

  17. This douchbag left public life in disgrace after stealing over $650,000 from taxpayers in the form of using government aircraft as his personal pleasure airline.
He is a racist, Archie Bunker liar.
    Most significantly he is a co-chair of Romney-Ryan 2012.
He, as well as this ticket, make me sick.

  18. Gracious sakes it's FUNNY to watch the race-baiters try spin this. Thanks, Sean and you other thinly-veiled racists for knee-jerking so predictably.

  19. WAKE UP America and especially LOG CABIN MEMBERS...this is the Co-Chair of Mitt's campaign. They are bigots before, during and will remain bigots after this campaign. Read about Sununu in today's N.Y. Times editorial... If gays votes for Romney... and he wins, they'll get what they deserve ,a one way ticket back into their closets!

  20. The endorsement was based on the fact that Obama is a mad dog warmonger and so is Powell.

Colin Powell is a war criminal in the same mold as Hitler's foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop. Von Ribbentrop never fired up the ovens. He didn't machine gun people in trenches that were really mass graves. What he did was to lie, threaten, and violate international agreements to facilitate Hitler’s crimes. That's why he was found guilty at Nuremberg.

Colin Powell served both Bush's and Clinton as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs ,National Security Adviser and Secretary of State. He facilitated the genocides of Clinton and Bush2 and the criminal oil war of Bush1 in defense of the homophobic royal parasites who own Kuwait.

The fact that he’s endorsing Obama means that Powell feels safe that he won't be indicted as a war criminal as long as Obama continues the war and that he agrees with Obama’s war policy, which will enlarge and expand an unwinnable war causing more deaths and putting the finishing touches on the destruction of our economy and standard of living.

Powell’s endorsement would be coldly rejected by anyone with an ounce of decency, which is why Obama will revel in it.

From Wiki with many snips - The My Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass murder of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968, by US Army soldiers of "Charlie" Company. 1st Btn, 20th Infantry Rgmt, 11th Brgd of the Americal Division. Most of the victims were women, children, infants, and elderly people. Some of the women were gang-raped and bodies were later found to be mutilated and many women allegedly raped prior to the killings. While 26 U.S. soldiers were initially charged with criminal offenses for their actions at Mỹ Lai, only Second Lieutenant William Calley, a platoon leader in Charlie Company, was convicted. Found guilty of killing 22 villagers, he was originally given a life sentence, but only served three and a half years under house arrest.

Colin Powell, then a 31-year-old Army major, was charged with investigating the letter, which did not specifically reference Mỹ Lai. "In direct refutation of this portrayal is the fact that relations between Americal Division soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent." Powell's handling of the assignment was later characterized by some observers as whitewashing" the atrocities of Mỹ Lai."

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

  23. Wow, TIM, breathe through your mouth much? It's affecting your brain, and not in a good way. Say "hi" to the 1950's for me, would you?

    Posted by: millerbeach | Oct 29, 2012 4:33:07 AM

  24. Of course Tim would link to the neo-Nazi Stormfront. It'd be anything but wise to even begin to debunk the fallacies in there and that comment. When everything is in terms of "race", it's not other people with the problem.

As for Powell endorsing Obama, who is Sununu to judge exactly why he's doing so? They could agree on policy, political orientation, foreign affairs, diplomatic strategy and a number of other areas, yet he goes for the race soundbite. It is racist to assume anything about the decision when it's implied that all that matters to him is his racial identity and making assumptions about allegiances. Unless that's an accurate reflection of how Sununu came to his own decision.

Asking why is one thing, but providing the answer for someone is another.
