Russell Brand Interviews Two Westboro Baptist Church Members: VIDEO

Russell Brand brought two members of Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church to his show to explain their anti-gay hate.

BRAND: "Have you considered that the Bible, like all religious doctrine, may be allegorical and symbolic to direct us toward one holy entity of love, as opposed to a specific litiginous text to direct the behavior of human beings? The Bible wasn't literally written by a cosmic entity. It was written by people."

WBC: "It was written by the holy spirit."

BRAND: "The holy spirit ain't got a pen!"

  2. I love Russel, I wish if he and Katy could have married for life!

  3. "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind it is abomination"

Well technically that's impossible. And it's one of the most pointless verses in the Bible.
By The Way, this flawed instructive didn't even make it to the commandments. It wasn't even renewed in the New Testament.

As a Catholic, my most humbling experience is that despite all this hateful propaganda, I can have a personal relationship with God.

  4. @ RAFAEL :

    I respect your views.
But I'm not clear how many gods Christians have .
I'm told that god or the holy spirit wrote the bible. Then I'm told about Jesus who is also a god, he is divine , as defined at the Council of Nicea (?).

So I think Christians have at least 3 gods; they may have more, but I don't know what they are.
So when you say you have a personal relationship with god.....I just have no idea what you're talking about or which one of the gods you are talking about.

  5. Aren't there only 2 WBC members? Or maybe 6?

    Posted by: Boo | Nov 20, 2012 12:39:43 PM

  6. The Westboro Baptist Church [they have no connection the Southern Baptist, they're Baptist in name only] are obviously mega trolls. Eventually this will come out and be acknowledged, and then the sh*t is really going to hit the fan.

In Christianity it is referred as the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. God is one and he has presented himself in those three forms you speak of: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

  8. the westboros are literally a congregation comprised of like two families.

they're not the real enemy. they didn't convince anyone to donate money to, and vote for, Prop 8 and the similarly-bigoted ballot measures.

the westboros do our work for us.

fight the real enemy - the sweetly-smiling "Christians" who pretend that they don't harbor the exact same beliefs the Westboros do.

the multi-million strong Christian denominations across America that are convincing their flocks to give money to support hate, to vote against equality, and to continually promote anti-gay prejudice.

  9. Russell handled that pretty well, I have to say.

  10. He shouldn't have even had them on the show. Hate speech shouldn't be given a platform, ever.

    Posted by: Ulu | Nov 20, 2012 1:33:19 PM

  11. Yeah. Seriously. What people don't seem to understand about WBC is that if you ignore them, they will go away. They exist ONLY because people pay attention to them. They are crazy nut jobs. We need to focus on the threats that actually matter ie the Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus. WBC have about as much relevance as that crazy lady in Omaha talking about how kids in same sex families "rape each other hetero" on the playground. People can stand and yell and wave signs all they want. If you walk by and ignore them, they look pretty damn foolish.

  12. Haven't I seen these two dudes at San Francisco Leather bar? They look awfully familiar.

  13. The holy spirit my ass.
I was at a Catholic school and they teach us the bible was writen 2000 years ago and it needs to be interpreted, because Jesus lessons were thought for people to that age, and obviously not educated.
And the Bible is not a book, is a lot of books, some of them are not even religious like Leviticus as its name say is a book of laws.
The bible was writen by men, and some of the text are way after Jesus

  14. Stole this from my straight friend,

"It all makes sense now. Gay Marriage and Marijuana being legalized on the same day...

Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lays with another man, he should be stoned."

We've just been interpretating it wrong for years!"

  15. Russel is brilliant. Keeps it going in the face of complete stupidity & ignorance and even manages to make it fun. I say "fun" because those WBC guys are a joke and Russel made it perfectly clear in his own delightful way. Gotta love Russel.

  16. @Ratbastard: There are plenty of types of Baptists, not just Southern Baptists. The 'denomination' of Baptists is so loose that many independent churches, like WBC, can legitimately call themselves Baptist. Unfortunately. If the sh!t hasn't hit the fan already, it never will:(

It's no surprise I hadn't heard about Brand before. Love him.

  17. Perhaps the holy spirit likes getting high or drunk, which would explain the Bible's inconsistencies.

    Posted by: anon | Nov 20, 2012 3:41:58 PM

  18. yep, this Holy Spirit business is a puzzle !

All the other gods are called "Father" and "Son"......human types; but Holy Spirit ........what is it exactly ?
I know about god giving commandments and so on and Jesus walking on water and being killed......but where did this Holy Spirit come from ?

    Posted by: JackFknTwist | Nov 20, 2012 4:26:23 PM

  19. This was only funny because Russell is so sharp, but what these men are saying is so scary. When the bald one tells one of the guys he's a pervert that just made me so sad. They say they're not hateful, but they're so hateful and ignorant.

    Posted by: Susan | Nov 20, 2012 6:47:59 PM

  20. no; why give them any kind of space ?

    Posted by: MArk | Nov 20, 2012 9:07:35 PM

  21. Rational 21st century people should try, as often as reasonably possible, to show people that the collection of myths, mostly made up bloody ancient history, contradictions and many vile moral teachings that is called the Bible is the root source of so much hatred in the world. People who just quote the bible's warm and fuzzy sayings and ignore the many vile and hateful things are enablers and almost as much of the problem as these two morons.

  22. @Jackfkntwist...

If you need info about the foundation of faith in Christianity, then try Google or Wiki. Your comments are disrespectful and on par with trolling. Even though some Christians take their dogma to biased and twisted levels, like these WBC types, not everyone believes as they do and you lumping them in one big stereotypical conspiracy is just as bad as what the wingnuts do to us.

  23. These people's view of hell? HA! I'd rather be in hell with all my friends and boyfriend than be in heaven with people like this.

    Posted by: Will | Nov 20, 2012 9:58:25 PM

  24. If the WBC view of heaven and hell were real, when they finally ring down the curtain and join the choir invisible, they'll find themselves in what looks like a beautiful cathedral, where they will spend eternity listening to an organ that is perpetually out of tune as a background for non-stop sermons from Fred. They'll beg for the traditional lake of fire.

  25. @Andrew

Totally agree, and would add that it's time so-called 'Christians' opened their eyes to what the faith they claim to ascribe to actually stands for. They are propping up the religious right, who use the widespread nature of their religion as a justification for imposing anti-feminist, homophobic and racist laws. If more people actually read the Bible, a lot less of them would claim to agree with it. I have considerably more time for the WBC than fox hole religionists, because at least they're acknowledging and living the reality of what the Bible actually says (other than mixing fibers - those look like mixed fibers to me), rather than pretending it has anything in the slightest to do with peace and love. Russell Brand is an intelligent and witty man, but he's achieved nothing here.
