More From The Vatican On Gay Marriage: 'Why Not Polyandry?'

PopebenThe Washington Post followed up with the Vatican about their panicked, quixotic crusade against marriage equality both here and abroad.

Here's what they came up with: the Vatican is sticking by that old-timey "Why not polygamy?" argument.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, for his part, said gays can have their rights protected by means other than through legal marital recognition. He stressed that children should have a right to say they have a father and a mother.

“If not, then why not contemplate freely chosen polygamy, and naturally so as to not discriminate, polyandry?” he asked sarcastically. Polyandry is when a woman has two or more husbands.

“As a result, don’t expect the church to stop insisting that society recognizes a specific place for marriage between a man and woman,” he said.

Who would expect anything more?

  1. The Pope also wants to know why he and his priest can not just continue to rape and abuse children as well.

  2. Death to the catholic church. They should not only be taxed, they should be dismantled.. Period. No exceptions. This country is held back because of mythological beings such as jesus. And here we are with white men claiming that rape is god's will.. We should al be embarrassed and very afraid.

  3. Polygamy is a red herring used by irrational people. Courts would laugh.

Whatever the joys or sorrows of polygamy, the union of 3 or more people raises different issues than the union of 2 people. Those arguments would be no more related to the question of same-sex couples marrying than they would to the question of opposite-sex couples marrying. In fact, polygamy is more related to heterosexual marriages than to gay ones.

The only pertinent question is whether there is any rational reason to exclude same-sex couples from our present-day understanding of 2-person marriage. There isn't.

  4. If children have a natural right to both a father and a mother, then why does the pope's god let parents die?

  5. And this from an ex Hitler Youth who says we gays are "inherently defective".

Please, don't use the words "moral authority" in the same chapter as this miserable bollix.

  6. Why not polyandry? Why not polyglots and polyhedrons and polyphony?

Whenever these religious right people think of marriage equality for same sex couples, they just let their minds wonder where'er they will. I vote for polynomials myself, and Polynesians.

  7. Note to Vatican:

You backed the Mormon, he lost.

Every time you try to flex your political muscle, your skirts just ruffle in the wind.

Your Prada loafered pig in a blanket appointed leader (AKA your Pope) is a pedophile enabler who thinks he can get by leading his flock to oppress people.

    Cut your losses girls.

    Move on.

  8. Straight marriage already lead to polygamy and in some cultures, to polyandry.

It was only banned because it screwed up our modern concepts of inheritance. This isn't an issue with gay marriage.

  9. Wasn't polygamy big in the bible? I lol every time i hear a mouth breather say -i believe in biblical marriage. I'm like have you actually read this stuff? Yeah, biblical marriage, where women were treatedlike cattle and could be murdered if they weren't virgins. Yeah sounds fantastic.

  10. ...says the Pope, wearing Red Prada shoes, surrounded by gorgeous male Swiss Guards. This is an example gay self-hatred at its finest.

  11. Catholics, or anyone who follows any religion should keep their mouths shut. They should be in prison for child rape alone. Diseased tyrants, the entire lot of them. They have overstayed their welcome on this planet.

  13. Looks like he forgot that polygamy was OK in the Bible. Solomon had hundreds of wives and concubines, 100% God approved.

  14. Most Catholics in the first world are Anglicans now, except they don't know it yet.

  15. "Children have the right to say they have a father and a mother". They also have the right to say they have two dads or two moms.

  16. If people want to be in a committed polyamorous relationship, I'm okay with that. Why is this idea always trotted out as the height of horror? If you want to live in a family of three adults (plus children or not), what's the issue? Marriage is a legal contract meant to affirm the rights and responsibilities of people who choose to bind their lives together. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't even need to be sexual partners.

  17. And children also have the right not to be molested by the filth that is religion and its followers.

  18. It's amusing to watch gay people try to steamroll the Vatican, and anyone else who stands in their way -- all for the right to wake up to the same person every single day. May I suggest a viewing of Thornton Wilde'rs "Our Town" An homage to monotony. Maybe grow some roses and re-enact the Faye Dunaway "Box Office Poison: scene from "Mommie Dearest" Funny how you are so specific about what you may never get.

  19. The answer is simple: as other posters have mentioned, polygamy causes a host of social problems that gay marriage does not.

  20. The Catholic Church has lost almost all of its moral authority in regard to sexual ethics. Why? It tells married heterosexual couples that they can not use contraceptives to limit family size. How many Catholics don't follow this teaching? About 95%. The Catholic Church says that you should not use condoms to prevent or greatly limit the spread of AIDS. How many Catholics follow this teaching? Only the ones who are HIV positive as a result of the Teachings of the Roman Church. How many Catholics support their Bishops policies of hiding mostly homosexual priests preditors from law enforcement? None!

  21. why not polyandry? or polygamy for that matter? other reglions practice them. does the catholic church hold the patent on marriage?

My belief is that what is fundamentally a religious ceremony should have no more legal recognition than my cat should have the right to vote

  22. Hey, Towleroad, what was with the comments shut-down yesterday?

Anyway, Ms. Prada Popette should really just take her meds, sit down and shut up.

But then, she's appealing to the only base she has left: ignorant, underdeveloped countries.

  23. @ JAMAL 49 :
Yeah, I sent a message to TOWLEROAD about the shut down on comments yesterday,. No response.

  24. @Jason: Anyone who puts a child up for adoption should have the right to closed adoption.

  25. "People need to understand that polygamy is NOT “sister wives” and “big love”. UT, AZ, TX and other states "turn a blind eye" to true polygamy where children (girls as young as 12) are married off…"

    NO.

When you make something illegal, then anywhere that it remains, there's going to be a far higher liklihood of misuse, abuse, and horror stories.

Just like "real abortion" isn't back alleys, unsterile equipment, and horrible infections, and "real drug use" isn't street gangs, contaminated and cut drugs, and prison sentences.

Yes, what you are discussing happens. But it would be far less likely to happen if legal polygamy between consenting adults, including the ability to divorce, was simply a part of the legal landscape.

Whether or not there's a justification for legal polygamy, citing abuses like this as "the real thing" simply isn't accurate.
