Towleroad Talking Points: The Great and Powerful Oz

A look back at today's top stories

WINGNUTTERY

Mitt Romney made his first remarks about his loss in the election last week. In an interview with the New York Times, Romney blames his defeat on Obama's "gifts' to the young folks . At least Romney still has this guy. Pat Robertson has offer his two cents on the Petraeus scandal; he thinks it's totally fine because Petraeus was just doing what men do. And Donald Trump still doesn't believe that everyone thinks he is a big fat joke. And a former Navy Chaplain says that the recent marriage equality wins are the sign of the end of times.

A school in Canada denied a transgender student access to the bathroom. Also a lesbian woman in Nebraska who very obviously faked a hate crime against her refuses to admit that it didn't happen

SLURS AND SOLDIERS

Andy Cohen called One Direction "a bunch of twinks" because, well they are. And for some reason he was forced to apologize because it's a slur? If it is then my entire dating life is based on a slur.

Jon Stewart has come up with the clear solution to the David Petraeus situation. Get rid of the heterosexuals in the military!

VIDEOS OF THE DAY

Finally! The biological reason for morning wood!

Two trailers to check out today. First James Franco is a young Wizard of Oz. And then a preview of Any Day Now, a film about a gay couple fighting for the right to keep their child

  1. The transgender student wasn't just "denied" access to a bathroom- it's an ongoing problem. Saying that the student was "denied access to a bathroom" makes it sound like it was just a blip. It looks ike Sam just read the headline and didn't read the post.

  2. Why are all of Sam's posts in a weird, tiny font in the RSS feed?

  3. The Romney piece has a link to another Towleroad piece. The New York Times article is here: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/14/romney-blames-loss-on-obamas-gifts-to-minorities-and-young-voters/?ref=politics

  4. The theory was, "Twink" means a cute young gay man, and the One Direction boys aren't gay. I thought Twink was a type -- didn't limit it to gay youth. Anyway, Cohen apologized for inadvertently calling the band boys gay; it wasn't a slur, just a misidentification.

  7. Odds are at least one of the 1D boys is a "genuine" twink, that is to say, gay. We shall see.

That being said, I guess "twink" is a gay term, but I didn't really think of it that way; I thought it was a type of gay/bi-ish boy of a certain, mostly hairless variety, but whatever. The point is gay anything is not a slur, and overall, I would bet the One Direction boys get that and aren't about that. More time than I needed to spend on a boy band's direction, however.

  10. Surely even Andy Cohen should know better than to comment on the perceived sexual orientation of people when he doesn't actually know what it is. Make no mistake about it, calling someone a twink is making a claim that the person is gay.

  11. "Twink" refers more to physiognomy than sexuality. It can mean more, but fundamentally and essentially, it refers to physical type--smoother, leaner, slighter. Far from being a slur, it is a very, very good thing indeed.

  12. @DannyEastVillage: it's showing how at least one of One Direction is a twink in the fullest sense of the term.
