Vatican Still Thinks It Can Turn Back Marriage Equality

PopereadingLast week's historic LGBT wins made clear that the United States has turned a corner in terms of marriage equality, finally coming out victorious against conservative religious powers that want to maintain institutionalized discrimination.

But some American anti-gay activists still think they can turn back time -- and so too does the Vatican, which used its semi-official newspaper to claim it's going to come out on top.

...According to an article in L’Osservatore Romano by historian Lucetta Scaraffia, the church has emerged in recent years as the only institution on the global stage that’s capable of resisting the forces that threaten to "break up ... human society."

...

"You could say that the church, on this level, is bound to lose,” writes Scaraffia. “But this is not the case.”

According to the historian, the church’s fight on moral issues such as gay marriage and abortion has drawn support and “admiration” from many non-Catholics.

Scaraffia went on to argue that political battles over gay adoption, abortion and other policies the Vatican deems sinful aren't about "progress," but about "the loss of one of the founding freedoms of the modern State, religious liberty."

Today that same paper ran another piece that "sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition," says the Washington Post.

And the Vatican's editors even worked their quixotic belief into a report on President Obama's re-election: "If Obama wants to be the president of all American people, he must eventually acknowledge the requests that are rising with strength from the religious communities  — the Catholic Church being the first in line  — in favour of the family, life and religious liberty."

Meanwhile, the aforementioned article on America's waning religious right noted, "Solid majorities of Catholics supported same-sex marriage, said Dr. Jones, the pollster."

  1. is this photo of the pope?
    is that his office?!

    it looks pretty dismal -
look at the bookcases in the background
the whole place looks cramped, and dingy and cluttered
it looks like the office of a third world petty bureaucrat
    this is the pope's office?

  3. We all know the Catholic priest can be predators of children and that the Vatican hides the pedophile priest from justice. Now we all need to watch the religious right because they also have become dangerous predators in the world who hide their evil acts.

  4. Religiouse Liberty? The vaticans so-called loss of religious liberty, like all other religious bigots, is defined by them as not being able to force their religous bigotry on everyone. They have religious freedom, as do all of us to practice or not practice organized religion. But they think that if they cannot force their religion on the masses, then their religious freedom is lost. Actually, religious persecution by the church is the only thing being lost. The forcing of religion (persecution) is a BAD thing and the churches actions continually drive GOOD people away....you know....the ones who love everyone no matter who they are and are finding the church to ABSOLUTELY bigoted. Further, the arguments this persecuter is making about other forms of marriage just show how immature and childish the church is getting. To HELL with the church and their judgmental followers! Good withou God!

  5. When they come clean, and I mean completely clean of the pedophile priest problem, only then will I believe a word that comes out of their mouths. I want to see police cars transporting the pedophiles to jail, not some other parish. I want this pedophile problem to end now. This is what the RC Church should be focusing on, the pedophile priests and those abetting those priests and defying law enforcement. This horse-hockey of religious liberty has taxed me to my limit with the RC Church...I have never seen the Church stoop to such low and stupid levels. Sorry, RCC, you really dropped the ball on this one. Good luck at getting back those parishioners who walked out during those sermons which said we would burn in hell if we voted for Obama. I sure hope you lose your tax-exempt status over this one. Unbelievably bad judgement regarding this election...you really expected me to vote for a heretic? Get real.

  6. According to exit polls President Obama won the vote among Catholics, so they must be okay with his current position on these topics.
