England's Anti-Gay Catholic Leaders Need To Lay Off The Sci-Fi

Longley

There's some more dystopian doom and gloom about marriage equality coming from the Catholic Church in England. Days after Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols called conservative plans to legalize same-sex nuptials an "Orwellian plot," Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham Bernard Longley is claiming that men marrying men and women marrying women will lead to unforeseen consequences because children of the future won't have both a mom and a dad because the nuclear family will be obsolete and forgotten. Or something.

"Government policy cannot foresee the full consequences, for the children involved or for wider society, of being brought up by two mothers without a father's influence or by two fathers without a mother's influence," he says in a letter to be read during Feast of the Holy Family services across Birmingham tomorrow.

"We first learn about diversity and acquire a respect for difference through the complementarity of our parents," says the stressed out Archbishop, according to The Telegraph. "The complementary love of father and mother is a precious gift that we should wish for every child."

Because in Longley and company's vision of the future, gay marriage has become the norm and straight people are no longer raising children and up is down and black is white and aliens are running the world's governments. It's even crazier and more nightmarish than anything Orwell could dream up and, like Orwell's work, complete fiction.

  5. @MikeW: I love your last sentence. I'll have to start using it myself.

@Bart: Just a small correction: the RC church does not take the Bible literally. Moreover, they think people actually listen because they simply exist. They have yet to realize that they have to justify their existence, like anything else. That comes down from the Pope, who still lives in the 1950s.

  6. I think as a matter of fairness Towleroad should occasionally post some of the anti gay Israeli Conservative Jews and their anti gay prejudice.

  7. @Diogenes: You're welcome.

While the RC church may not "officially" take the Bible literally, that does not stop even senior prelates from teaching the myths to children and congregations. Even the church's acceptance of evolution comes at the cost of inserting its own theistic mechanisms into the process.

  8. In Canada for generations, the catholic church removed first nations children from their loving families to 'civilize the natives'. The poor children were stripped of their culture, their language, their sense of any family and were abused repeatedly by nuns and priests.

The catholic church has no moral authority to speak about what is good for children. They are simply control freaks who fear the loss of revenue and sheeple from their ranks.

Equal marriage has been the norm in Canada and numerous other countries around the world for many years. None of the BS they espouse is true. Simply fear mongering.

  9. @ RICH 705 :
The Catholic church did exactly the same with native children in Australia.

I cannot ever accept any moral statement whatever from this gang of self adoring narcissists.

  10. @Rich705 & JackFknTwist: So did the US government.

  11. In spite of some of the earlier posts, I would rather not see this color associated with anything gay.

@MikeW: I've used the argument, just not so concise a statement. I'm in a discussion elsewhere with someone who is certain about his one and only interpretaion of 1c CE practices - yet I point out that people (such as here on TR) can have great differences on contemporary nomenclature.

  12. Guess what? The nuclear family is already under threat. By whom? Not gay people. By the straight men and women having children out of wedlock by multiple fathers and mothers. The world is changing and 'traditional marriage' can't cope with it.

  14. Gotta admit when I first saw that picture of the archbishop, I thought it was Dame Edna. Then again, she has better taste.

  15. The anti-gay Catholic stories are frequent on this site. As a "fallen away" Catholic, I would ask for some balance in reporting. Catholics tend to be more suppoprtive of LGBT equality than Protestants in the USA. Some of the most supportive of LGBT Equality are the Governors of N,Y., Conn., Ill., Calif., and Maryland and the V.P. of the USA. Many of the "Catholic" countries of Europe and Latin America have moved to support Gay Rights.Don't make the mistake of judging ordinary Catholics by the actioms of their closeted homosexual hierarchy.
