NRA Promises 'Meaningful Contributions' to End Gun Violence in First Statement Since Newtown Shooting

The National Rifle Association released its first statement since the Newtown school shooting:

NraThe National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

The group says it will be holding a press conference on December 21.

  1. Weasel words from an irresponsible self appointed gang of Neanderthals.

  2. Oh please. Their "meaningful contribution" will be "it's not guns. It's society/mental illness/hollywood/violent video games. also, if the principal/teachers/first graders had had guns, this never would have happened!!!"

  3. Maybe they are waiting until the 21st so in case the world ends, they don't have to comment.

  4. Friday? So, they're hoping the world will end before they actually have to give a "meaningful contribution."

  5. I have mixed feelings on Gun Control. I'm very much for the 2nd Amendment in that the people should be able to protect themselves from the government (that was the spirit in which it was written). Do I think the Government poses a real threat to its citizens, not really. Nor do I want uneducated half wits running around with automatics "defending themselves from the Government."

  6. What is the NRA going to do? cease to exist? That's the only descent contribution they can possibly make.

  7. Of course we know what that "meaningful contribution" will be: "Buy more guns!! Buy more bullets!!" Bastards. Plus ca change.

  9. Meaningful contribution? They can lick my semiautomatic nutsack.

  10. Timothy McVeigh protected himself from the tyranny of the Federal Government (at least from his perspective.) Are 2d Amendment nuts supporting this? Not to mention the opening clause of "a well regulated militia." Does anyone honestly believe that all the semi-auto and automatic weapons one could possibly posses would be a defense (or worse, offense) against the US government? Have you seen our military might and how modern warfare doesn't even need to place a soldier at your door to kill you? It's all a poor argument that these personal weapons could fight government tyranny. in the late 1700s yes, not today.

  11. We all know the kind of "meaningful contributions" the NRA is likely to bring forward in this discussion: obfuscation and obstructionism. More of their usual.

  12. They say the same thing after every one of these horror stories. What changes? Nothing. They know how to do PR. This time is more pressing because it involves children. But they don't give a crap.

  13. are they going to kill one registered member for every young innocent life lost?

trade in their semi-automatics for the highschool credits they neglected to earn?

  14. If the 2nd Amendment means what it meant when it was written, then the right to bear muskets and sabers shall not be infringed.

  15. I will not hold my breath in anticipation. Or, my voice in opposition.

  16. Don't count on it. The NRA is very good at playing on the irrational fears and ignorance of the conservative masses all in the name of the 2nd ammendment. The NRA has made a killing ( pun intended) in profits particularly during the era of Obama portraying the president as a charlatan with a devious agenda to take away people's guns.

Expect more of the same this time. The NRA will do nothing to change the status quo and everything possible to defeat any attempts at implementing sensible gun control all in the name of 2nd ammendment "freedoms."

  17. Carrot, stick. I'll await their press conference and solutions with an open mind. But, if it does not include the curtailing of access to assault rifles and high capacity magazines they needn't bother making a statement because we the people will.

  18. Psychiatry and their drugs killed the kids the same as all of the shooters who were on psychotropic drugs given to them by psychiatrist.

  19. @Marc C.

What in the world are you talking about? What do you expect we the people to do? Rise up and do away with the NRA? How? With the law? They are kicking everyone's a$$ with the law. They are a big lobby, or haven't you heard? With guns? You don't know what in the world you are talking about.

  20. Why can't all those "gun enthusiasts" not simply be honest and admit that they collect and shoot guns for their own personal enjoyment and because it makes them feel powerful and "more of a man", as even those disgusting advertisments for weapons imply?

Why all the ridiculous BS about the 2nd ammendment and "protecting yourself from the government"? Are they stupid enough to actually believe that a) in the 21st century, the US government would "attack" its own people in that way, and b) IF this ever happened, they'd be able to defend themselfs against the army with its tanks, drones and possible chemical/biological weapons, with their "civilian" guns??

Are "gun enthusiasts" really this paranoid and/or stupid?

And tell me how many times an armed civilian has actually stopped a massacre like the one at Sandy Hook from happening? Never, right?! And how many times has an armed civilian committed such atrocities as Sandy Hook? Plenty of times, right?!

  21. The NRA is the largest and most influential domestic terrorist group in this country. They aren't offering anything but the promise of more violence and terror.

  22. Who cares what the Never Really American thinks? None this hand wringing was going on when black, latino or asian kids were victims. Now that it's white kids all of sudden "we" gotta do something?

Posted by: DC Arnold | Dec 19, 2012 8:26:08 AM

  23. All the NRA is interested in is damage control and the perpetuation of their weapon-obsessed agenda. The time for mass opposition to them is now.

    Posted by: Jack M | Dec 19, 2012 8:49:15 AM

  24. Don't expect much from the NRA. They'll probably recommend adding silencers to all guns so the victims won't know that they been shot! It's time to silence the NRA, and their paid lobbyist in Congress and the Senate and local governments.

  25. "Meaningful contributions"? Discount assault weapons for your 6-year old. Just in time for Christmas. A portable gun-range for each elementary school? Down-sized dirty-bombs for little fingers. Merry Christmas, NRA. There's money to be made!!
