Pope Benedict XVI Joins Twitter as @Pontifex

Screen Shot 2012-12-03 at 8.15.36 AM

The Pope has joined Twitter officially, though he has yet to send out a Tweet. He is receiving tweets, however, including this one, asking, "@Pontifex why do you defend child rapists?"

No doubt folks will have  quite a few similar questions.

Mashable writes: "The move was announced in November, when a Vatican official said the Pope (or, more precisely, whoever handles his Twitter account) would be tweeting fairly infrequently, with his tweets 'not veering far from his texts.' The Pope’s account currently doesn’t have any tweets. It follows 7 other accounts, which are all versions of the same account in different languages: German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Italian, French and Arabic."

  1. Ask him about his duties in the Nazi Party when working at a concetration camp. Ask him why his neighbors from the time of his youth have said that there were ways to resist the Nazis but that his family and he were thought to have taken a different route. It isn't discussed enough that the purported moral paradigm of the world did not fight back against the Nazis. It isn't much to ask really.

  2. And why shouldn't the pope use social media? Priests and bishops have been on Grindr for years.

  3. Hope his parent, i.e. his Holy Father would protect him from the attacks of hackers.

  4. This will not end well. But it may be quite amusing.

  5. Change that "e" between the "f" and the "x" to a "u" and you've got Miss Pope Thing in a nutshell.

  6. Wow! The Pope is so cool! I think I'll become Catholic!

(yes, this is sarcasm, dear believers)

  7. @MarkT - Not to defend the pope (he seems a sleazly unholy old bastard), but he would have only been 11 or 12 at the start of WWII, and 7 when the Nazis came to power.

Just an addition to the hypocrisy list concerning the papal order: someone just told me that the Vatican has the world's largest collection of pornography (supposedly confiscated from sex-driven evil doers). Does anyone know if this is true?

  10. I think if that old man reads many of the tweets he is likely to get, a new pope will soon be installed.

  11. I'm sure there were be great censorship of the tweets that he will actually read. After all that's what happens between the people in the pew and him.

  12. @LeRoy LaFlamme: Give it a bit longer, and the spin meisters of the RC church will go ecstatic over the wonderfulness of his witness to living until natural death. I can still hear them exulting how full of vim and vigor the half-dead J2P2 was.
