NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn on Scalia: 'Don't Compare Me to a Murderer Because I'm a Lesbian' - VIDEO

NYC City Council Speaker Christine Quinn appeared on MSNBC's Hardball last night in a segment about Scotus Justice Antonin Scalia's remarks comparing homosexuality and murder.

Quinn_matthewsQuinn denounced Scalia:

"The Justice should apologize...It's offensive. Sexual orientation is who we are as people. It's how we're created if we're LGBT. And to compare that even in a way you want to say was some philosophical exercise to a heinous horrible crime of murder. It's just wrong. He can say it's a slip of the tongue. Just apologize. But don't compare me to a murderer because I'm a lesbian. Just don't do it. It's wrong."

Added Quinn: “My father always said, 'It’s nice to be nice.' And it is. And you should treat other human beings even if you disagree with them, even if you dislike who they are, in a respectful way. The justice was disrespectful to me and my family. And that doesn't further my understanding him better, or him understanding me better."

  1. She's entirely correct as any decent person should know. For fully appropriate justice Scalia should not only apologise he should be slapped in the face. What an assh*le.

And of course he should recuse himself. He's unfit.

  2. Exactly.
Scalia should be removed form his lofty perch and placed in an aslyum. He's clearly insane.

  3. If you look at what he said, he is not equating being a lesbian with being a murderer. This is really a stupid thing to get upset about. He was using a form of argument to make a point about morality and the law.

Our complaint should be that he thinks gay sex is immoral or that his own standard of morality should be "the law".

Yes, he is disgusting and yes, he hates us. But our complaints are falling on deaf ears because it comes across as if we don't understand what he is saying.

  4. Well said.

  5. our complaints are falling on deaf ears because he is a hateful bigot, not because he is misunderstood. be absolutely clear about that. he is one with the vatican.

  6. This issue has a very simple solution.

Supreme Court Justices need to be held to a higher standard. We can start by asking Scalia to recuse himself from those cases of which he has indicated personal bias!

  7. No TC we understand, they fail to understand why using a technique that compares the enforcement of laws against immoral things like murder to other things he personally feels are immoral, like me and my husband, is insulting to us. Plainly put, murder is not illegal because it is immoral, it is illegal because it remove the right to live from a person without their consent or any larger body of government deciding it is in the best interests of the state to do so. Laws are not and should not be based on one groups feelings of morality but on what the action does to the person and community in actuality. Murder damages the community in many obvious ways, the only way my marriage to the man i have been with for 10 years will damage the community is by eventually putting the FRC and NOM out of business. It is offensive and if he had used it to compare laws against interracial marriage it would be getting even more attention. That is not even taking into account that he is apparently using the technique wrong, but that was something i got from another blog post so i cant confirm it, but i am sure someone one here can fill that in.

  8. Justice Scalia is one of the craziest men to sit on the Court since Roger Taney. Reagan's Alzheimer's must have been well along when he appointed this wingnut.

It's worth noting that Taney ("A black man has no rights the white man is bound to respect") was a "strict Constitutionalist" just like Scalia...just something to ponder...

  10. I love her!! (Quinn) Scalia is just sincerely mentally ill...and (I dare say) would probably be capable of violence toward the LGBT community if he were not in this elevated position. He's just a thug in a black robe. Period.

  11. RANDYOWEN - You've got it right. TC is being a picaune pedant. It's the gist that matters and the mention of homosexuality, even near any equivalent mention of murder, is grossly inappropriate.

  12. This is what you get when you need a justice, to blindly support you right wing fiscal BS; a not so very bright evangelical.

  13. Supposedly Scalia is a member of Opus Dei and was involved in Clarence Thomas' participation as well. A side note is that Scalia goes to the same church as Santorum. There is no doubt Scalia is intellegent but somehow that intelligence doesn't inable him to separate his culture based belief in scientifically unsupported fairy tales from his duty to analyze and bring fairness and justice through the tenets of the American Constitution to our society. This in itself precludes him from being a qualified Justice in our highest court.

He is a truly a despicable man.

  14. People keep saying how smart Scalia is. Maybe, but so was Josef Mengele.

  15. Scalia is much to arrogant to recant. He's predisposed to self-righteousness and probably can't help himself. Some of it has to do with his genetics...and as a Sicilian myself, I know what they're like. If you put my fathers head on Scalia's body, minus about 100 lbs., it could be my father pontificating. Or my brother, cousin or any one of a dozen uncles.
That lovely island is prone to inbreeding. Did you know that Sicilian women avoid marrying Sicilian men because they require too much babysitting? It's a fact. Of course, if they're cousins...they go for it!

  16. Scalia is a bigot and a disgrace to the SCOTUS. He has violated judicial ethics by stating his position on an issue coming before the court ahead of time.

  17. Proverbs 23:2 proclaims, “Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony".
Need I say more Mr. Scalia?

  18. Scalia exposes a liar, every time he speaks in public. The Princeton freshman called him on it, and Scalia tries to pretend he didn't make an odious, bigoted comparison by greasing himself up with a transparent rhetorical trick: "I didn't compare murder and homosexuality, I compared THE BANNING of murder and homosexuality." Why would you society ban either, unless you believe they are comparably immoral? And if Scalia didn't wish to compare the two acts, certainly there are other "immoral, criminal acts" besides murder for which he could've made the comparison. No, we are not persuaded, and Scalia just got called out by a ballsy Freshman. "Out of the mouths of babes...."

  20. There's a petition on White House's website demanding that Scalia recuses himself from the gay cases before SCOTUS

    Posted by: Resoffla | Dec 12, 2012 4:02:30 PM

  21. You watch, Scalia will be brought low and leave his post one way or the other in general disgrace. This will grow in coming months and years. It's what happens to everyone who publicy villifies and attempts to invalidate the lives of gay people. He will not recant his opinions nor the damage they will have done. Arrogance cannot recognize itself. He will simply be as dismayed as he is irrelevant.

Here is my hand. On his face. PUSH. Sic transit gloria.

    Posted by: UFFDA | Dec 12, 2012 4:14:19 PM

  22. Quinn is a dangerous idiot. Scalia wasn't speaking of his personal opinion or a slip of the tongue. He was responding to his repeated, written, Supreme Court decisions. And it's not just offensive, it's clear evidence of bias.

    Posted by: Randy | Dec 12, 2012 5:59:13 PM

  23. Scalia needs to have a heart attack already...

but seriously, how does he get to make such absurd statements and still get to remain a vote on cases involving gays?
