  1. The AP takes a remarkably head-in-the-sand approach to suggest that "-phobic" can only mean "fears", when other uses have been standard for centuries. That suggest something else is behind the change.

    "-Phobic" can mean "fears" sure, but it also means "repels" or "hates" and some derived words have nothing to do with any of these.
