UK Bishop Compares 'Inhuman' Gay Rights To Nazism In X-Mas Sermon

And you thought Pope Benedict's Christmas address saying marriage equality "offends human truth" was repulsive. Well, his holiness has nothing on British Catholic Bishop Mark Davies.

The Daily Mail reports The Bishop of Shrewsbury is using his Christmas sermon later today to argue "that both Hitler and Stalin challenged Christianity with the notion that what they were doing was 'progress.'"

DaviesAn excerpt from the senior Catholic official's planned remarks, via the Daily Mail:

Past generations have gathered in this cathedral on Christmas night amid many shadows which seemed to obscure the future for them.

We think of the ideologies of the past century, Communism and Nazism, which in living memory threatened to shape and distort the whole future of humanity.

These inhuman ideologies would each challenge in the name of progress the received Christian understanding of the sanctity of human life and the family. Winston Churchill, Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, a man without clear, religious belief, saw in this deadly struggle nothing less than the defence of Christian civilization.

Davies also plans to hammer Prime Minister David Cameron for his pro-equality push. "The Prime Minister has decided without mandate, without any serious consideration, to redefine the identity of marriage itself, the foundation of the family for all generations to come," he will reportedly say.

Ruth Hunt from the LGBT group Stonewall described Davies's forthcoming comments as "offensive," which is an understatement. "Gay people are all too aware of the horrific results of Nazi ideology due to the countless casualties of the Holocaust," she said. "Bishop Davies’s comments are both deeply offensive to gay people and their families." And human decency.

  1. Ha! I'm amazed that the catholic church has the nerve to come out in public with statements like these. All that needs to be done is to look back through a WWII photo archive and find a mass of photos of catholic priests blessing stacks of Mausers or lines of tanks for the German army to show the honesty of the church.

  2. The Vatican was the first to sign an international treaty with the Nazis in 1933. In Trier, the Cathedral brought out the supposed "Robe of Jesus" which is rarely displayed to celebrate the concordat with the Nazis.

So I guess Mark Davies knows all about Nazis.

Sadly, the church as a whole throughout history has far more evil to answer for than it does good.

  3. The bishop should clean up his own house before judging others. A parish priest of his diocese Fr Phil McGovern was exposed in the Sun for trawling the internet in search of gay lovers under the username Happi Fella. Recently another of his parish priests Fr Peter Hooper was jailed for five years for performing a sex act on a teenage boy. Then there is the ongoing investigation into historic sexual abuse at the bishop's St Ambrose RC College in Hale Barns. The bishop utters hate filled words when it seems his own clergy can't live up to their vocations. Typical of the hypocricy of the catholic church.

  5. Silly me, I thought the meaning of Christmas was to show peace and goodwill towards everyone.

  6. Does this silly British bishop realize that homosexuals were targeted by the Nazis and given pink triangles to wear? If he doesn't, he needs to scrub up on history.

Underlying the Catholic Church's opposition to us is that we challenge its power. It's all about power and money. When you have power, you can make money from the people you have power over.

Power and money go hand-in-hand. Think of how rich the Vatican is.

  7. @Chutney: the reason "the catholic church has the nerve to come out in public with statements like these" is that the Catholic Church is trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Jones in this case is a worthy who has set the standard for religious nuttiness in a letter to the editor appearing in The Daily Post, distributed on the peninsula south of San Francisco. He claimed the root cause of the recent shootings is sin: "We have turned away from God and his Ten Commandments and have lost his loving protection." The worthy then goes on about the Supreme Court's "diabolical rulings that banned school prayer, nad [sic] legalized contraceptives, abortion, pornography, and homosexuality." He claims that Satan has been given complete control of the U.S.

Compared to this nut, the bishop is the voice of reason in spite of his best efforts to the contrary. But we can always look at the bright side of life. At least we made the list.

  8. This from a church that defends and protects child molesting priests. So a 40-year-old priest with a 10-year-old boy is OK, but a 29-year-old man and a 30-year-old man is a threat to the human race?

    Here's a scripture for you.
    John 11:35. "Jesus Wept."

  9. Yes, it is well documented that the Catholics were in league with the NAZI's. The Catholic Church looked the other way while the NAZI's committed atrocities against the Jews and others. The Catholic Church turned a blind eye as the NAZI's murdered children. Later, the Catholic Church helped many NAZI's escape Germany to Argentina in South America by providing passports, documents, and money. Of course, nobody talks about any of that now. Merry Christmas Everyone...!!!

  10. I am not Catholic, but if I was, and I said so in public, I'd have to wash my mouth out.

  11. @BZ: Amen. I'm sure his congregation, especially the C&E [Christmas & Easter] component, were fully expecting a vindictive political diatribe as part of the warm and fuzzy routine of celebrating Christmas. NOT! I absolutely cannot fathom such vitriol on Christmas.

  13. It really confuses me how rediculously stupid the Management of the Roman Catholic Church appears to be. They are the largest single collection of Homosexual men in the entire world, (even though there are a few "strait" higher ups, like the late Chicago Bishop that had a "Wife" with a Church built home in St Petersburg, Florida). By publicly condembing Homosexuality, the Pope is excluding a generally affluent group of potential members who would, on average, put more money in the collection plates every week than those men burdened by non working wives and children to support. Also, by supporting Gay Catholic couples who adopt children to bring them to Sunday School, the Church will continue to grow as these "Strait" children marry and have their own children in the future.

  14. You know that your side is winning when your opponents become unhinged and rant and rave, like the hierarchy of the Catholic and Anglican Churches. The irony of this whole debate is that a solid majority of Catholic and Anglican Priests are closeted homosexuals. And quite a few of them, to put it politely, have boundary issues when dealing with young boys.
