Illinois Catholic Priest Calls 911 After Getting Stuck in Handcuffs: AUDIO

The Illinois Times reports on a recent emergency at the Catholic church:

DonovanThe pastor of St. Aloysius church on Springfield’s north end has been granted a leave of absence after he called 911 from the rectory and told a dispatcher that he needed help getting out of handcuffs.

“I’m going to need help getting out before this becomes a medical emergency,” Father Tom Donovan told a dispatcher who sounds a bit incredulous during the Nov. 28 call.

“You’re stuck in a pair of handcuffs?” the dispatcher asks.

“(I was) playing with them and I need help getting out,” Donovan responds.

Donovan told the dispatcher that he was alone in the rectory. It’s not clear exactly how he ended up in handcuffs or why he feared a medical emergency. His voice sounds garbled or muffled on the tape, and sources say that police discovered some sort of gag on the priest when they arrived.

  1. Too Cute : Then you must be a total Adonis, because...I've seen some rather hot ones, even in the goofy clergy, who were allowed through, no matter how tempting they were to the classmates.

  2. I was an acquaintance of a leather club in New York state many years ago. Their road captain was a very handsome bear. who was also a Catholic priest. The church knew and would send him (and other sexually active priests) to deprogramming retreats in the desert Southwest.

  3. He wasn't alone in this "experiment." He just told his play date to scram before he called 911. Very gentlemanly of him, don't you think?

  4. My guess: he called 911 because he thought (a) that 911 tapes were private and (b) that the police would behave professionally and not broadcast it. Also, his friends might have been other priests, etc., who might feel compelled to report the incident.

In reality, in many if not most states, 911 tapes are public records.

  7. He is just stupid to call 911 and made this public. He can go to the hospital to have the handcuffs removed. I remember seeing on TV a guy with a hat glued to his head went to the hospital. They definitely have surgical instruments which are able to cut through the handcuffs.

  10. So many gay priests, so much hypocricy!

  11. I simply love to hear about how the roman catholic priests are so hypocritical and cover up everything sexual. Do publish more stories like this. And....... I love many of the comments, some of which are wonderful!!!

  12. An angelic image... I hope he becomes the poster boy for the church's repression. Honestly, the man needs to get out of the priesthood now and seek emergency counseling. I will weep if I see his obituary after he suicides in the next 12 months. So sad.

  13. Interestingly, not a word about this in the daily Springfield paper.

  14. Maybe a big bad cop was arresting him for being a bad boy when he got "stuck" in hand cuffs? Maybe his guilt became too much and he arrested himself for God? Thank God he did not hand cuff some little children like the Catholic Priest do before they rape and abuse them.

  15. Majority Catholic areas of the U.S in general tend to be far more open-minded regarding sexuality than the hardcore Protestant areas. And Catholics statistically are considerably more pro-gay and 'progressive' than in general Protestants, in the U.S. And this is coming from someone who is very anti-religion of all kinds. But in my wide experience I've never seen the type of obsession and pure hate for homosexuals that some hardcore Protestant and Baptist have among Catholics. Even conservative Catholics would be considered liberal by many hardcore evangelical Protestants and Baptists. And the vast majority of American Catholics are not hardcore religious conservatives.

It's a funny story, but I do feel for the guy. VERY few people no matter their background would want such private stuff made public and viral.

  16. Before I would hold this guy up to public ridicule, I would want to know what kind of guy he is and what are his public statements about LGBT folks. There are some Catholic priests who may be closeted but are very gay friendly.

  17. Who says 911 tapes are public records? Not in all states! Who outed this guy to the press? There was no crime involved, and no criminal investigation. Who called the local reporter, and why? A homophobic cop? A jealous or scandalized fellow priest who hates the guy? A member of the hierarchy hoping he "offs" himself to rid them of a kinky priest? Inquiring minds want to know.

  18. Too bad he's a priest! He's kinda cute!!!

  19. @Contrarian - Read http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/08/this_call_may_be_recorded_and_distributed.html for a discussion of the privacy of 911 calls. They are public records in most states. An up-to-date list of states with restrictions can be found at http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/telecom/confidentiality-of-911-call-recordings.aspx and Illinois is not one of those.

So, 911 calls are apparently a public record in Illinois, where the incident occurred. The priest might not have known that.

  20. As noticed by Ratbastard, the virulence of anti-gay hatred is more from the Protestant Religious Right than the RC church (at least pre-J2P2 and Benny). Protestantism tends to believe you should be consistent in your public life and your private life. Doctrine should be formulated accordingly. (This has been sociologically described as being North European.) OTOH, RC tends to believes that you can have separate public and private personae, as long as your keep your private life private. They also believe more strongly in being "pastoral" (=forgiving and even ignoring) about some problematic behavior, like being actively gay. Doctrine should always be formulated strictly with a pastoral out. (This has been sociologically described as being South European.) Note the prior obvious disconnect - as opposed to the current inquisition in RC from a German pope and his predecessor from Poland.

  21. @Dan Cobb: What did this priest say in his church bulletin about homosexuals? Give some specifics. If he is A vocal opponent of LGBT People, I say:hold him up to public ridicule. If not: STFU!
