Alabama Teacher Who Called Gays ‘an Abomination Against God’ Has Been Suspended

Bob Grisham, the Lauderdale County High School football coach and psychology teacher recorded by a student last week as he spewed anti-gay slurs, has been suspended, WAFF reports.

Grishamhe Times Daily reported last week:

The investigation includes a 1-minute, 24-second audiotape of Grisham asking who knows who is behind the 600-calorie school lunch. “Fat butt Michelle Obama,” he said. “Look at her. She looks like she weighs 185 or 190. She’s overweight.”

Male voices interject comments during the discussion, at one point referring to Michelle Obama as a “fat gorilla.”

Later in the tape, Grisham referred to the U.S. as going in the “wrong direction” and tells the students they can “get pissed off at me or not. You can go tell the principal, call the superintendent and tell her. I don’t believe in queers. I don’t like queers, I don’t hate them as a person, but what they do is wrong and an abomination against God.” The tape was reportedly recorded by a student Monday and took place on school campus during the school day.

Grisham, who said he "misspoke" and did not have hatred toward anyone, was suspended without pay following a 4 pm meeting by the school board today.

They always say they “mispoke” when they are caught. I am glad the younger generation is more open-minded then some of these morons.

  2. Sargon Bighorn says

He’ll be asked by NOM to speak in their ads saying he was fired for loving Jesus and speaking from his “deeply held religious belief” and see how the awful Homosexuals are suppressing religious freedom. I’ve had it with this bigotry high jacking the teachings of Jesus. Call these bigots out.

  3. DannyEastVillage says

Well–he certainly did misspeak–I’ll give him that. And the appropriate treatment for such “misspeech” is a brain enema.

  4. Keppler says

Which comments got him suspended? The ones about Michelle Obama, or the ones about his hatred of gay people? In Alabama? Just sayin’ I don’t think there’s much of a victory here.

  5. Mike in nyc says

If he had said the same hateful nonsense about Jews or Blacks or Christians, he would have been fired. Period.

It’s really appalling that he could end up teaching again filling young mindseith backwards hate.

He is the face of incitement to hatred; he is the inciter of bullies; he believes that bullying any kid perceived to be gay or different or non-jock is the right way to grow “manly” kids.
He is responsible for the heart break of young kids……who think they are not normal, or not accepted, or freaks…..who are bullied into suicide.

My God, this Neanderthal is allowed run around a school and is called a coach or a teacher. Are the authorities of this school mad ?
He is the very epitome of bullet headed jock ignorance.
Suspending him is too easy; fire the phucker.

We all need so desperately to unite and speak with one voice of tits like this.
We need to actively pursue the vicious bile these pri*ks vomit.

And most important we need to continually to get the message out to school kids that they must give themselves a chance to grow strong.

Every school kid in any danger needs to know that he/she must give themselves a chance to grow strong.
That’s a more personal, self helping message than the assurance ‘it gets better’.

    At least that’s my opinion.

The sad thing is that Bob Grisham is quite handsome and would probably be a good lay. Homophobic hunks usually are.

RAVISH ME WITH YOUR BIG MOUTH, BOB.

  9. Vira says

The unspoken part of this story is that Coach Grisham is resentful of the fact that the superintendent is a somewhat younger woman, and he (both as a “good christian” and as a good “traditional values” male chauvinist) is resentful of the fact that a woman leads the district. He alludes to this dissatisfaction when he says on the tape that ‘You can go tell the superintendent’, with a hint of an undertone of insubordination. THAT is why the punishment was as harsh as it was.

the most egregious thing about this is they let him teach psychology to teenagers! doesn’t the curriculum follow APA guidelines? what qualifies him to teach psychology?

  11. Jerry says

What a warped notion his supporters have of what a “good Christian man” is. I have read a number of comments from supporters who testify to what a father figure Grisham became to them after the death of their own father. More than a little whiff of Sandusky to it, if you ask me.

I had a coach/drivers ed teacher in high school that was mr macho. He was calling roll and made a comment that my first name sounded like a fag name. I didnt call him out on it, but kind of wish I had. Surprising though coming from someone named Sydney (Syd). Good for the kids taking this guy to the authorities.

  13. TonyJazz says

Well, good for the smarter people in Alabama!

I wasn’t betting on a suspension, though one was certainly morally appropriate…

  14. Dastius Krazitauc says

Why was he whining about 600 calorie lunches in the first place? That sounds like plenty of calories to me.

  15. Caliban says

It’s interesting that he’s a Psychology teacher yet doesn’t seem to know anything about psychological defense mechanisms like repression, denial, projection, and displacement.

If he did he might have to ask if there is an underlying reason why his whole life has been about winning approval from other men and admiring physical prowess in other men. He has to hate “queers” because if he didn’t he might have to admit that maybe he feels something more than just admiration for other men.

Good call by the school board. Now I hope that they get the guy some proper education before turning him loose on the students again. Specifically, the Board of Psychology in Alabama needs to supervise him before he teaches another class.

  17. BobN says

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that he’s going to get in trouble for doing this. It’s Alabama, for goodness sakes.

  18. Michael says

Let me get this right… He wants to complain about a Biblical abomination but teaches students how to hold the skin of a dead animal via a football.

    Hip, hip, hypocrisy.

  19. John says

He taught PSYCHOLOGY?!? What must have THAT class been like, and Michelle looks good, I’m glad he gave his permission for people to tell on him. Psychology! WOW!

  20. Chad says

Could I hate the South anymore. Not possible. Southern Republicans are really the evil in this country.

  21. ARMY BOI says

This man needs to understand that being an adult, ESPECIALLY an adult who works with children or young people, is a tremendous responsibility. It might not seem like it, but they listen to everything we say, and we need to be very careful about how we express our personal views and opinions. Carelessly worded statements can so easily be taken out of context, and once the damage is done, it’s done. The other issue is that, in the classroom during the school day, teachers represent the school and the school district they work for. Negative comments could be interpreted as representative of [the school’s] official position or policy. This teacher should be reprimanded and compelled to issue a public apology.

  22. oliver says

just shoot him in the head- we know there’s a great love of guns in Alabama- someone please do the world a favor

  23. ratbastard says

I get the feeling their are many bitter old timers on here, judging by many posts. Or people somewhat out of touch with 2013 and reality.

And it’s not surprising this story would have such traction by many TR readers. The evil old southern white guy who is racist and homophobic fits the narrative perfectly. Truth of the matter is this guy has obvious psychological issues, not that dissimilar to the many stories of teachers harassing and bullying students who dare to have non ‘progressive’ views, or who force kids to praise President Obama or obsess over racial issues, and engage in bizarre classroom behavior. And at the higher ed / university level the extreme ideological and politically motivated behavior of teachers and professors is off the chart. But we have this one crazy coach in a small Alabama town and TR faithful are getting their knickers in tight little bunch.

  24. angela says

Well the bible does call it an abomination. We have to show Gods Love to all but it doesn’t change what the bible says. Its a sad day when quoting the bible gets you in trouble. Then racist comments are made about christians and that’s ok. Yes Christians are to show Gods Love no matter what. And that’s what I try to do but I don’t agree with all the hatefulness on both sides. It is sin yes but we are to Love the sinner and hate the sin
