Alabama Teacher Who Called Gays 'an Abomination Against God' Has Been Suspended

Bob Grisham, the Lauderdale County High School football coach and psychology teacher recorded by a student last week as he spewed anti-gay slurs, has been suspended, WAFF reports.

Grishamhe Times Daily reported last week:

The investigation includes a 1-minute, 24-second audiotape of Grisham asking who knows who is behind the 600-calorie school lunch. “Fat butt Michelle Obama,” he said. “Look at her. She looks like she weighs 185 or 190. She’s overweight.”

Male voices interject comments during the discussion, at one point referring to Michelle Obama as a “fat gorilla.”

Later in the tape, Grisham referred to the U.S. as going in the “wrong direction” and tells the students they can “get pissed off at me or not. You can go tell the principal, call the superintendent and tell her. I don’t believe in queers. I don’t like queers, I don’t hate them as a person, but what they do is wrong and an abomination against God.” The tape was reportedly recorded by a student Monday and took place on school campus during the school day.

Grisham, who said he "misspoke" and did not have hatred toward anyone, was suspended without pay following a 4 pm meeting by the school board today.

  1. Let me get this right... He wants to complain about a Biblical abomination but teaches students how to hold the skin of a dead animal via a football.

    Hip, hip, hypocrisy.

  4. The youtube video has been removed due to policy violation (harassment or bullying.) I guess someone feels bad for the poor bigot. Here's a different link that works. Enjoy the haterade.

  10. This man needs to understand that being an adult, ESPECIALLY an adult who works with children or young people, is a tremendous responsibility. It might not seem like it, but they listen to everything we say, and we need to be very careful about how we express our personal views and opinions. Carelessly worded statements can so easily be taken out of context, and once the damage is done, it's done. The other issue is that, in the classroom during the school day, teachers represent the school and the school district they work for. Negative comments could be interpreted as representative of [the school's] official position or policy. This teacher should be reprimanded and compelled to issue a public apology.

  13. I get the feeling their are many bitter old timers on here, judging by many posts. Or people somewhat out of touch with 2013 and reality.

And it's not surprising this story would have such traction by many TR readers. The evil old southern white guy who is racist and homophobic fits the narrative perfectly. Truth of the matter is this guy has obvious psychological issues, not that dissimilar to the many stories of teachers harassing and bullying students who dare to have non 'progressive' views, or who force kids to praise President Obama or obsess over racial issues, and engage in bizarre classroom behavior. And at the higher ed / university level the extreme ideological and politically motivated behavior of teachers and professors is off the chart. But we have this one crazy coach in a small Alabama town and TR faithful are getting their knickers in tight little bunch.

  17. Well the bible does call it an abomination. We have to show Gods Love to all but it doesn't change what the bible says. Its a sad day when quoting the bible gets you in trouble. Then racist comments are made about christians and that's ok. Yes Christians are to show Gods Love no matter what. And that's what I try to do but I don't agree with all the hatefulness on both sides. It is sin yes but we are to Love the sinner and hate the sin
