Activist: The SF 49ers Need to Answer Questions About What Went Down with Their 'It Gets Better' Video

Sean Chapin, the activist behind the Change.org petition that convinced the San Francisco 49ers to be the first NFL team to make an 'It Gets Better' video, says the team needs to address the remarks made by linebacker Ahmad Brooks and nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga last week in the days before the Super Bowl.

Since Brooks and Sopoaga participated in the 49ers 'It Gets Better' video last year, reporters figured they would have an interesting perspective on the Chris Culliver story, but a new controversy arose when Brooks and Sopoaga both denied participating in the video, and then, when they were shown it, said they never knew it had anything to do with gays, and then appeared to want to distance themselves from it.

Their remarks led Dan Savage to pull the video from the 'It Gets Better' site. Savage then tweeted: "We've removed the #49ers #ItGetsBetter video from our website. #homophobia #NFL #horsesh*t"

  1. Bill: Oh please, the it gets better campaign had even international coverage. If you are going to appear in a video and you are a public person you better know what you are doing.
The guys are simply not bright enough, one of them denied being in the video even after a coleague of the team told him that in fact they did that video.

For god's sake, they live in San Francisco not in Utah, they better learn something before their career is over, because if they keep themselves so ignorant there's a big probability that they end being ruined five years after the end of their football career

  2. Another point: If I understand Chapin’s explanation at the beginning correctly, the SF 49ers were approached about making an IGB video, and they said they’d do it if enough people asked them to? So Chapin started a public campaign to get them to do it?! To me this appears to be all kinds of f*cked up. It’s wrong on the 49ers part, they should have said Yes or No, not “If…” But to me it’s also questionable to campaign and basically publically pressure anyone into making an IGB video. How sincere can an IGB message under such circumstances really be?

IDK, but this whole thing leaves all kinds of strange tastes in my mouth…

  3. Perhaps these guys have just taken too many hits to the head, and this shows the importance of addressing brain damage in he NFL.

  4. This is not hard to understand. ALL big corporate and institutional employers strong-arm employees to 'volunteer' and in this case, do a PSA. The team/NFL do it for PR reasons. Sorry if I sound so cynical, but it's the truth, although I'm sure there at least some who actually believe what they're doing.

Yes, because there's only one gene that causes cancer or a heart attack. F%cking idiot. Here's an idea, how about you go kill YOURself. Then there'd be one less moron in the world. THAT would be a blessing

  8. @funinsnows,

I take it back, you don't sound like Lil' C*unt...but he's a slippery character so I can't be sure.

  9. And Harvey Milk also 'outed' a guy [who saved President Ford's life during an assassination attempt in S.F.] who shortly afterward committed suicide. So Saint Harvey had at least 2 suicides under his belt that we know of. I agree with you there, funinsnows.

  11. Umm, when did getting someone to make an "It Gets Better" video become "activism" Thats kind of embarrassing.
