Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as His Lover Scott Thorson: First Look

Though we have seen some preview pics and paparazzi shots, here's the first 'official' shot from HBO's Behind the Candelabra, which Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover Scott Thorson, via the Hollywood Reporter:

"The couple met in 1977, when Thorson was just 18 and Liberace was 57. They remained together until 1982...Director Steven Soderbergh told journalists at TCA in January that he had sought out to tell the story of a 'real' relationship. Damon echoed the sentiment, saying: 'We weren’t giggling about it. These were people's lives. We wanted to get it right.'"

Coming to HBO in May.

  1. Give me a break! Then no gay actor should be allowed to play a straight role. People getting their bloomers in a bunch when there are truly bigger things to get outraged over (Adam/Andrea).

  2. But the real question is: Will we get to see Michael Douglas tongue-punch Matt Damon's fart-box?

  3. I don't have any problem with straights playing gay or vice versa. I do think when most straight actors attempt an effeminate or androgynous gay man they rarely succeed without being off-putting and cheapening.

  4. "Casting straight men in these gay roles is getting real tiresome. It's almost verging on blackface."

Nobody would watch any of these larger scale gay films if they all starred nobodies from Broadway and either Neil Patrick Harris or that Quinto guy. Where are all these big gay actors that should supposedly be starring in these films? It'd be nice, but you're living in a fantasy land if you think anybody's going to finance these stories with Cheyanne Jackson in the roles.

And, furthermore, just because someone's gay doesn't make them right for the part. Sir Ian McKellen may very well have been terrible as Liberace.

  6. maybe this time Matt Damon will actually play the character as opposed to himself in a casino, a zoo, whatever? Act for once.

  7. I've just never seen two actors look more like they were playing dressup.

  8. What made being gay fun? I'm not REMOTELY like Liberace, and if I did act campy and fem it would be an act. An I'm homosexual.

Yes, it's odd to have a middle aged man like Damon play a young man. Aside from what I just wrote, I won't be in any hurry to watch this, if ever. I'll have to be blitzed if I do ever watch it. It'll probably develop a cult following though, and re-inforce many heterosexual's views of typical gays.

  9. Ummm, how can you complain about how terrible/offensive a movie is when you haven't even seen it? So far a few stills are all you have to go on.

True, Damon's age is way off, but using "name" actors was probably the only way this was going to get made.

And so far as Liberace being some proud gay icon, he was far from it. That doesn't mean his story isn't an interesting one- a flamboyantly campy "star" who publicly denied being gay despite clearly being gay. If the movie goes into that hypocrisy and the personal pressure it put on him and his relationships it may have something interesting to say about the "closet" and fame. We can't say anything about yet though because WE HAVEN'T SEEN IT!

Not being afraid of drugs is hardly what anyone that was there would call it. Your choice of words and your complete obfuscation and revisionism of the era IS the problem.

I'm not sure if you're retarded, or just really high still.

  12. Justsayin: Using the word "retarded" is as bad as "faggot" these days. Get with the times you insensitive idiot. It's obvious you are "not sure" of much.
