Vatican Issues Denial Of 'Gay Lobby' Reports

6a00d8341c730253ef017ee6b20269970d-300wiEarlier this week, two Italian newspapers, The Panorama weekly and The Repubblica, both reported that Pope Benedict had resigned from his post due to "various lobbies, including a gay lobby." The Vatican has now responded - and they are none too pleased with the reports and the Italian media.

The Guardian reports:

The Vatican secretariat of state said in a statement: "It is deplorable that as we draw closer to the time of the beginning of the conclave … that there be a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions."

According to The AFP, which calls today's statement by the Vatican "unusual," Catholic Church spokesman Federico Lombardi has also commented calling the reports "gossip, disinformation and sometimes calumny."

The Pope will officially step down this Thursday.

  1. I have no doubt that there is a far higher percentage of homosexuals in the College of Cardinals than in a Chorus Line in a Broadway Musical. The only differece is that the guys in the Chorus Line are out and proud and psychologically healthy.

  2. My guess: the proverbial handwriting on the wall was the graffiti on Vatican bathroom stalls: "Benedictus felator rarus est." I won't translate this Latin sentence. It suffices to say that it is not appropriate in polite company, nor in not-so-polite company, not that the Romans would particularly mind as they were a randy lot and regularly made scandalous comments about public figures regardless of the truth.

  3. I don't recall being happier than the day when I heard he was resigning. Someone found something on him, he's getting out of the kitchen, 'cause it's heating up fast. More cover-ups than a beach full of fatties.

  4. @millerbeach: get someone to translate the Latin sentence in the comment above yours - a meaningful translation might not get past Towleroad's filters.

I've heard rumors that there is something on him, and I heard those well before the resignation. It seems I met a guy at a party who knew someone whose boyfriend was high up in an archdiocese, and the boyfriend knew what was going on due to having participated in it (something of a sexual nature). At least, that's the claim.
