Pennsylvania City Councilman Reprimanded, Mocked for Sending 'Gay' Email Out on Emergency Alert System: VIDEO

Staniszewski

Washington, Pennsylvania City Councilman Matt Staniszewski has been reprimanded by Mayor Brenda Davis for sending out a citywide emergency email alert that read: "Alert: This is a Test. Brian is gay," KDKA reports:

Email“This is completely inappropriate and unprofessional coming from an elected official,” Davis said.

According to Davis, a person who had signed up to receive the alerts contacted the city and said they were offended. Davis, who confronted Staniszewski at Monday night’s council meeting, also said she doesn’t know why he had access to the pass codes to send the email.

“His response was that he sent it out and it wasn’t him saying Brian is gay. He said gay means happy,” Davis said.

“Maybe in the 1950s that’s what it meant, but we are in a new era now and that doesn’t represent the City of Washington.”

Staniszewski released the following statement about the incident: "It's offensive and unprofessional for the mayor to automatically assume one definition of the word when there are multiple definitions.”

Jimmy Kimmel mocked Staniszewski on his show last night.

  3. How old is this guy? 12? Is there going to be a deeply idiotic elected official in the news every day of 2013?

  4. He sounds like a real winner all around! Check out this article from 2008!:
"A Washington, Pa., council member reported to jail last night for drunken driving offenses, but he cannot be forced from office, according to government officials.
Matt Staniszewski, 30, is scheduled to serve six to 18 months for two offenses of driving under the influence of alcohol and one charge of careless driving."

  7. Seriously? Who in this day and age, under the age of 50 would assume 'gay' to mean happy? Granted, the very fact he thought it appropriate to send any e-mail alert out that wasn't, you know, an alert, shows his immaturity, but this is just pathetic.

  8. I don't know him, I have no idea how he found out I was gay, and I apologize to the people of Washington that my gayness caused an emergency there.

  9. Liamb, I think it's fairly safe to say that he knew exactly what it means and that he was just trying to cover a drunken, stupid move.

  11. So is that Brian in the picture because that boy is G-A-Y?

  12. See people, this is what we're up against. They're cowards. Most don't even stand for their own bigotry when confronted on it and play the victim card and assume we're all stupid.

  13. Brian is not gay. Bryan is. So is Stephen (but not Steven) and Philip (but not Phillip).

  14. It was inappropriate in another way: sending a frivolous message on the emergency alert system, regardless of what was in the message.

And kudos to the citizen who objected.

  15. This is how the Beastie Boys handled it back in 1999:

''I would like to... formally apologize to the entire gay and lesbian community for the s---ty and ignorant things we said on our first record,'' Horovitz wrote. ''There are no excuses. But time has healed our stupidity.... We have learned and sincerely changed since the '80s.... We hope that you'll accept this long overdue apology.''

  16. First it's Lech Welesa, now Staneszewski, it would seem this if the month for Polish jokes. We have two so far and it's only the seventh. Well, he certainly has proved he's dumb and not mature or courageous enough to admit a mistake.

  17. Unprofessional and immature at best. His defense of his actions is straight up homophobic and disrespectful. But this guy has quite the backstory and corruption seems to follow him, so it's not as if he's a master at showing any semblance of common sense.

Things like this just add to the mentality that many in our society have that being gay is a joke, something to deride and laugh at and not take serious. It's not OK. At all.
