The Vatican Buys Europe's Biggest Gay Sauna: VIDEO

Sauna
(ad for Europa Multiclub)

The Vatican has bought Europe's biggest gay sauna, The Independent reports:

A day ahead of the papal conclave, faces at the scandal-struck Vatican were even redder than usual after it emerged that the Holy See had purchased a €23 million (£21 million) share of a Rome apartment block that houses Europe’s biggest gay sauna.

The senior Vatican figure sweating the most due to the unlikely proximity of the gay Europa Multiclub is probably Cardinal Ivan Dias, the head of the Congregation for Evangelisation of Peoples, who is due to participate in tomorrow’s election at the Sistine Chapel.

This 76-year-old “prince of the church” enjoys a 12-room apartment on the first-floor of the imposing palazzo, at 2 Via Carducci, just yards from the ground floor entrance to the steamy flesh pot. There are 18 other Vatican apartments in the block, many of which house priests.

Priest_bearThe newspaper adds:

The sauna’s website promotes one of its special “bear nights”, with a video in which a rotund, hairy man strips down before changing into a priest’s outfit. It says Bruno, “a hairy, overweight pastor of souls, is free to the music of his clergyman, remaining in a thong, because he wants to expose body and soul”.

There was further embarrassment for the Holy See when the press observed that thanks to generous tax breaks it received from the last Berlusconi government,  the church will have avoided hefty payments to the Italian state. The properties are recognised as part of the Holy City.

  6. Or maybe the Vatican's plan is to end the Sauna's tenant lease.

  11. @andrew: Regardless of how some prelate feels, according to the Bible, Jesus would feel quite at home there.

    Matthew 11:19
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.

They wouldn't have said that if Jesus, real or imagined, did not like to have a good time on occasion, and "sinners" in particular don't hang out with people who say nothing but "repent, for the end is near." The best excuse the bible thumpers can use is that Jesus had to do some sampling so he'd know what he was saving people from.

  12. Why does this sound like a comedy? Something on the order of "The Ritz" (1976) meets "La cage aux folles" (1978).

♪♫"Vespucci, I just met a boy named Vespucci..." Hmmm. I guess we'll have to change the lyrics to ♪♫"Cardinal, I just met a boy with a Cardinal...."

  13. @Bill - I think you mis-read Andrew's comment. It's not the location of the apartment nor the people in the neighbourhood, it's the palatial size of it that's the problem. These Vatican types aren't much for giving all to feed the poor.

    Posted by: ger | Mar 11, 2013 7:10:22 PM

  14. @Bill: "Sell all that you have, give it to the poor and come follow me". You can find support for almost any position you want in that mythological collection of horrors and contradictions called the "good" book.

  15. @andrew: there's one woman who made the news by giving up a lot of wealth to the poor and then became a nun. http://articles.latimes.com/1994-10-29/local/me-56060_1_san-francisco has the details. In another similar case, they canonized the woman: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2000-03-12/news/0003120247_1_canonized-philadelphia-socialite-nuns .

So, they are perfectly happy with people giving all they have to the poor - others, that is.

The 12 room apartment of the guy mentioned is possibly used for a lot of work-related activities. Don't assume he has 12 rooms for his personal, private use.

  16. tell me didn't do it on purpose . he doesn't have to walk so far to find a date. anyone want to bet that on any given night there are priest kneeling and hearing confessions

  17. I've been there before. It's actually a pretty awesome sauna full of hot Italian men.

I'm unaware of having seen any priests there, however :-)

  18. @Bill: The 12 room apartment is probably used for his personal luxuries living. These guys aren't called "Princes Of The Church" for no reason. You can be sure that most of the Catholic Hierarchy, at least those in the wealthier nations live like fat cats in Mansions and even Palaces.

  19. This is not a mistake. They knew what they were doing. They just thought we wouldn't find out about it.

In the past ten years the Catholic Church has TWICE been discovered to be investing in companies which make contraceptives.

Religion is ALL ABOUT MONEY people ! Nothing else. They soon forget their public principles when they can make money in private.

  21. DUE TO HIS VOW OF POVERTY -- the 76 yr old cardinal ought to give up a few of those 12 rooms.

    Posted by: Bob | Mar 11, 2013 9:38:12 PM

  22. @Bob: Most Cardinals, like the majority of Catholic Priests are Secular or Diocesan Priests and do not take a vow of poverty. Religious Order Priests, Nuns and Brothers take a vow of poverty. That is not meant as a defense of the luxurious life style that many if not most of the Catholic Hierarchy live. They should live much simpler lives if they are pretending to be followers of Christ. And they might remember his admonition that "It is easier for a camel to pass though the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven".

    Posted by: andrew | Mar 11, 2013 9:57:12 PM

  23. @andrew: The Dali Llama lived in a huge palace while in Tibet, but actually used a small room as his living quarters. The rest was used for religious/governmental purposes.

I bet there is a similar arrangement, with rooms set up for meetings, a library with gobs of documents, a private office, some rooms used by
his staff, etc. It is probably a 24/7 job.

  24. How conveeeeeeeeeeeenient. For the priest queens! :-)

  25. I went to this sauna too many times to mention. no vatican connection ever visible or imaginable, believe me. the normal amount of priests trying to get it on the down low in rome without telling anyone they were priests until at least the second date is much lower at this sauna than at others, like the one way out at sesto miglio or various bars.

anyway, the situation i spoke of above has happened to every gay man i know in rome.

but that sauna had no noticeable priest action ever beyond the normal at all.
