Gambian President Threatens Gays: 'If We Catch You, You Will Regret Why You Are Born'

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, who has a long history of anti-gay threats, has made a few more.

Said Jammeh this week: Jammeh

“Homosexuality is anti-humanity. I have never seen homosexual chicken, or turkey.. If you are convicted of homosexuality in this country, there will be no mercy for offenders. We will put you in the female wing of the prison,” Jammeh said.

“We want the population to grow. There will be children in this country. Homosexuality is anti-god, anti-human, and anti-civilization. Homosexuals are not welcome in the Gambia. If we catch you, you will regret why you are born. I have buffalos from South Africa and Brazil and they never date each other. We are ready to eat grass but we will not compromise on this. Allowing homosexuality means allowing satanic rights. We will not allow gays here.”

  1. That's it. I'm cancelling my vacation to Gambia right this instant.

  2. Too bad idiots in positions of power have a bully pulpit much like our repugnant republicans. His country will not prosper due to the hate he expouses.

  3. What this man said was vile and obviously ignorant, but the raw, and unrestrained racism, and epic stupidity in the comments section reveal an ugly sad truth about those posting here.

Africa is not a sewer, wasteland, or monolithic. It's an entire continent, made up of many nations, and cultures. The people who live there are human beings, who are as capable of great beauty and intelligence, as anyone else on the planet. It's also the birthplace of all humanity, and the cradle of civilization. Think about that the next time you delude yourself of your own superiority, and post hateful comments.

  4. Another shining example of the effects of European/christian colonialism. Gambia has a poor and poorly-educated population and American evangelicals have found fertile ground there, as they have in many other African nations. Very sad and very, very frightening. I really worry for the LGBTQ people who live in some of these countries like Gambia, Jamaica, etc. Dear god, how horrible it must be for them! We must put pressure on our own politicians to make sure they don't let Gambia's president carry out his threats.

  5. Jamal - The Gambia was ruled and culturally converted to Arabic Islam centuries before Portgugal commercially colonized it. But you keep sharing, otay Buckwheat?

  6. Oh Michael, how superior you are. Let me guess, you took an elective in Afrocentric studies? Well here's a book you might enjoy:

  7. Population growth in Africa has nothing to do with gay people, it does, however, have everything to do with the sleazy parasites in power that do next to nothing int he form of dealing with third-world issues of lack of sanitation, clean drinking water, proper nutrition, and adequate/minimal medical care.

But this type of thing is nothing new in Africa, where the leaders tend to be all about themselves and their little circles living the high life, while the rest of the country wallows in filth and poverty.

  8. Stop feeding and medicating Africa and the problems will take care of themselves. This is why The Federation has The Prime Directive.

  9. As humans they probably are capable of greatness but with leaders like this hateful, angry idiot they just reinforce what ugly subhumans they actually are to the outside(functioning)world. Why would anyone want to visit such a pathetic "country" with so much hate, poverty,UNequality, anger and stupidity? These "countries" already contribute little (if anything) to the world and continue to take $,time and energy with their hateful rhetoric.
Cut off the free flow of $$$$$ and we'll hear their tune change REAL quick!

  10. As a South African I find a lot of the comments here sickening and typical of the American 'let's nuke the **** out of them' attitude. Yes this guy is a tool. But don't forget that colonization, the supposed superiority of the West, is what led to the creation of autocratic monsters such as these.

  11. Michael, I commend you on speaking some sense to the provincial drivel spouted by some of the 'leaders of the free world' here. It's so sickening that people who are a minority can be so ignorant and ugly regarding the oppressed in other places.

  12. Really JK? Do enlighten us about a time before white people when The Gambia was an enlightened democracy.

  13. Mr President, you're the man. What a great position to take and what a great display of Character. I remember Cameron was earlier told by the Nigerian legislative chambers to go to hell with his Aid to Nigeria when he threatened to withdraw all Aid if they banned Gay relationships. Who are you to make the law in other countries. I have not heard the West say same to Saudi Arabia yet?

Posted by: Congo Meat | Apr 5, 2013 6:08:44 AM

  14. David Hearne, unlike you I do not view so-called 'democracy' as the epitome of human achievement. It doesn't guarantee equal rights for all or freedom of oppression - far from it. Tribal ways of life may have been extremely patriarchal but that's nothing compared to the sheer 'christian' ignorance spread thanks to the white man (i'm white myself, not that it should matter).

Also, remember that in Uganda, a LOT of support for the 'Kill the Gays' bill was drummed up by American evangelical pastors. We live in a global system where different forms of governance and political actions interpenetrate, so before you take the obvious route of harking on about ignorant heathens, consider the role your own ignorant heathens are playing in their zeal.

  15. I read these posts that hate the leader of this country Gambia. Do you have any idea what these nations in Africa face because of rampant homosexuality and AIDS. It has and will destroy generations there. There are some places where 80 percent of the local population has HIV. First of all, this leader is right this being unnatural. As a farmer here in America I can tell you that those of you who listen to some bogus professor telling you that homosexuality is rampant within the animal kingdom are just plain dumb. The incidences are remote at best and these claims are bogus. You herd followers toward gay marriage and those who hate what this leader said don't have to worry about the health costs caused by homosexuality and HIV in Africa. He KNOWS it will destroy his country. You don't, only because you have not yet seen the health effects it has had in places like Africa. Do you honestly think we are immune? It is unnatural and has caused these diseases. They are not some CIA prank. Increasing same sex relations will eventually sink this country one way or another. The leader of Gambia at least has the GUTS to say so to his people, unlike our shapeshifter unprincipled leaders.

  16. Why did he say they would go to the female wing of the prison? So they could not spread anything to other males there. These African nations must take serious measures. If we were suffering like Africa is with HIV--this Gay Marriage debate would be over.

  18. I pity homosexuals, oh God what a terrible error we are in. Characters that require rehabilitation have been given rights, to bring insanity to the whole world, when i read these comments, and i picture the number of patients i have come across whose anuses are rotting. Whose intestines are coming out from their behinds, i soo loose it. One fellow commented that Jammeh will regret it on judgment day, mmmh i hope yoself are not regretting it already with a rotting anus and an unstable mind. Many are going to abuse me after this comment that am backward, If I am, thank God coz i would be glad to be backward without having to be civilized while eating feces
