'Not Homophobic' Montana Lawmaker Compares 'Deviate' Gay Sex to a Pen That Retracts: VIDEO

Yesterday I reported that after many years the Montana legislature finally repealed its unenforceable statute criminalizing gay sex. One of the nuttier speeches during the 25 minute second reading of the bill came when Rep. Dave Hagstrom stood up to explain his 'no' vote and compared gay sex to a pen in its retracted position. Hagstrom prefaced his remarks by saying that he has "a lot of love and respect for a whole number of homosexual friends, so there’s no homophobic issues going on here at all."

Said Hagstrom:

“I don’t think that homosexual sex is necessarily not deviate. Bad word? Deviate simply means it’s not normal, it’s not typical....This pen has two purposes. The first purpose, of course, is to write. The second purpose is to retract, so that it doesn’t leave a stain on your shirt or your purse. So it has two purposes, but one is primary and the other is secondary. To me, sex’s primary purpose is to produce people, that’s why we’re all here. Sex that doesn’t produce people is deviate. That doesn’t mean that it’s a problem. It just means it’s not doing its primary purpose. So I’m just speaking to the bill and I encourage people to vote red.”

I've also posted the entire 25 minutes if you have the time - it's quite interesting.

Here's yesterday's full debate, which is quite fascinating:

  1. Rep. Dave Hagstrom is a fool in a losing storm. Marriage equality is coming so I'm quite enjoying these dying preposterous arguments.

  2. Why do dogs have sex because it wants to have puppies? no they do it because feels good.
A better comparison would be, why do we ride horses, do we do it to get somewhere or because we're deviant and enjoyed riding. These Evangelicals spend their entire lives trying to twist around the world to suit their BS.
I think the guy just gets off on the in and out motion of a pen.

  3. Over 1/3 of Montana Republicans want homosexuality illegal. That's scary and sad. But at least they lost in the end.

JJ, we all know why they don't talk about lesbians. Because it's us gay homosexual queers that are rump rangers putting penis in the butt. These people are truly immature, stupid and their arguments clearly hold no water so it makes it almost comical to hear their crazy.

  6. By his logic the primary purpose of his mouth is to consume food so he can survive. So, he should stop using to for "secondary" purposes like speaking out (especially crazy ideas like this one)!

  7. Right, JK. And the primary purpose of his nose is to smell. Do he should get 10 years in prison for using it for a secondary purpose like holding up his glasses (and never mind freedom -- who needs that!)

These "procreation" fanatics seem never to notice not only that gay people can and do find ways to reprouce if and ehen they decide that it's the right time for it, but that the biggest problem threatening the world 's existence right now is OVERpopulation.
I sometimes think (mostly hypothetically) that if geneticists ever figure out a way to determine and choose the sexual orientation of a fetus, governments might 50 years from now be trying to ensure EVERY child born is gay.
It would be radical but gay couples can ensure that no accidental children are born and when every child is chosen at the same time that their sheer numbers are more limited, the planet just might have a chance to survive for a long time. If people continue to breed like rabbits, humans are pretty much sealing their doom.

  8. The weight of homophobia lies not in how loudly you proclaim that you aren't homophobic but rather in the actions that prove just how homophobic you are.

  9. It's time to challenge these hypocrites, every time they mention their mythical "gay friends," to produce them. Invite one along to your testimony next time, huh?

  10. "Deviate" is a verb, not an adjective. He meant "deviant", which is both a noun and adjective.

To deviate is to veer off course. Deviant is either one who purposely behaves in an antisocial manner or an adjective meaning antisocial or anti-normative.

Gay sex might be deviant (depending on the context), but it can't really deviate unless you started doing one thing and ended up doing another.

A pen either retracted or not is not deviant nor has it deviated. A deviant use of a pen might be to stab someone with it, or perhaps write a nasty letter, but that better describes the person using it, rather than the pen itself.

  11. So he wants to outlaw retractable pens?

    Posted by: BobN | Apr 11, 2013 4:10:18 PM

  12. Did he just, in a roundabout way, suggest that it should be illegal to retract a retractable pen?

  13. Every time I hear that kind of argument, I wonder if they would be willing to describe heterosexuality as "ordinary" and homosexuality as "extraordinary".
