Mark Sanford's Ex-Wife Allegedly Caught Him Trespassing

It looks as though anti-gay, 'traditional marriage' defending, Republican former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who left office over and extramarital affair and is now running in a special election for the state's 1st Congressional District seat, may be toast again.

SanfordThe AP reports:

Documents acquired by The Associated Press Tuesday say Jenny Sanford confronted her ex-husband leaving her South Carolina home on Feb. 3. Her attorney filed a complaint the next day and she confirms the documents are authentic.

In them, she says he was using his cellphone as a flashlight as he left. The couple's divorce settlement says neither may enter the other's home without permission.

Sanford has been ordered to appear in court two days after his election.

  1. If only I was a SC resident, I'd support Jenny S. to run for public office especially for the 1st Congressional District seat. I also think [burnt] toast is too good for Mark Sanford.

  2. It may just be me, but momentarily I read "flashlight" as "Fleshlight."

  4. Was Stephen Colbert behind this?

His sister is (hopefully) going to make sure this stays in the public eye.

  5. And I totally agree with RichB: Jenny Sullivan Sanford is a force to be reckoned with. I don't know her politics, but I admire and support her anyway. While her ex trips all over himself, she comes out looking like a strong and sympathetic figure.

  6. How pathetic to see gay men expressing political support for a person like Jenny Sanford, who over the past couple of decades has supported the candidacies of some of the worst homophobes in South Carolina, including her ex-husband and, since their split, current Gov. Nikki Haley. Have a little self-respect.

  7. NOM should hire Mark Sanford as a new non-cognitive spokesperson for their Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance.

(For either Mark or Jenny Sanford to oppose marriage equality of course reeks, to high heaven, of hypocrisy. Mark is also a friggin' liar [Appalachian Trail].)

  8. Well this just goes to show how loose the morals of those who would seek to give us "direction" truly are.

  9. researching this a little more reveals this has been an recurring pattern for him. He's trespassed already several times on her property. So he's a sick puppy who has issues of stalking his ex wife it seems or something.

  10. How does this guy still have a political career?

  11. If he stays in, SC will elect him to Congress.

  12. Sanford did NOT leave office over a marital affair. He was caught, but refused to resign. He finished his term as Governor.

  15. Mark Sanford creeps me out. He is just too odd.

  16. He seems the kind of individual who thinks they can get away with anything.

  17. I wonder what nasty piece of audio, video, letter, photo etc, that would have cost him the primary he was rooting around in her house trying to find. Hopefully she has it in a safe place and can release it about 3 days before voting day.

  18. Why does this guy want to oppress gay men and vilify them when he committed adultery and is now breaking the law? Hypocrisy at its best.

  19. I don't know if you saw the photos when he won the primary, but his kids were on stage with him and his girlfriend, the Argentinian, made a "surprise" appearance. He's got a kid maybe 10 or 11 and the look on that kid's face and his body language would break your heart. The man is disgusting for doing that to his son, who obviously loves his mother.

  20. Sanford had a brilliant strategy in the primary. He blithely said from day one that he believed in "a God of second chances." Meaning that if you brought up the Appalachian Trail lies and shenanigans you were attacking God. It was a maneuver of nearly Swift Boat nefariousness (did he have Rove on retainer?), and it worked. The tea party / Christian Right candidates who attacked Sanford failed miserably. Tax-cut-lovin' Republicans just don't want to hear about that stuff. Sanford has a knack for changing the subject to his being a more-righteous-than-thou small-government purist regardless of his actual behavior, his inability to work with others, or his lack of solutions.

To give you an idea of how impossible Mark Sanford is, during budget negotiations with the state legislature back when he was governor, he called a press conference inside the statehouse where he carried two baby pigs, one under each arm. The pigs were named Pork and Barrel. The pigs shat all over the floor of the House. The legislature was infuriated. Virtually all of Sanford's vetos as governor were overridden, almost a standing joke here. When it came time to bring him up on ethics charges, well, there were plenty of legislators lined up to supply the rope. Oh, and in a further demonstration of his personal style, Sanford announced that he'd barbecued the pigs and eaten them.

Jenny, who brought family money to the marriage, raised some eyebrows with her tell-all autobiography, but other than that (she says she needed the money) she has been altogether far classier than Mark Sanford has deserved. She really has tried very hard to stay out of it. The home where she raised the boys is tasteful but not over-the-top extravagant, although it is located in an expensive beach neighborhood.

Colbert Busch has avoided talking about Sanford's morals, concentrating instead on depicting her as a self-made business-savvy single mom who understands how people struggle. Not usually a winning strategy in such a highly red district, but we'll know in three weeks. Notably, she has criticized Obama for excessive spending and a bloated budget. Working against her is the highly conservative makeup of this gerrymandered district, which is programmed to vote for somebody just like Sanford. One wonders, though, if his support among Republican women might just slip a bit...

And Mike (11:56:10) is spot on. The primary-victory celebration pic showing Sanford with his wounded sons as he is "surprised" by his mistress/girlfriend/fiancée? That's a Tennessee Williams play in one image. The man really is a walking reality show.

  22. Wonder if his bff Joe Scarborough will still have such nice things to say about him on Morning Joe? Of course he will.

  23. It's starting to become pretty clear that this guy is a sociopath, right? Clearly, he believes he can do no wrong.

  24. The people of South Carolina must be the dumbest rubes in the nation.

Posted by: Kevin thor | Apr 17, 2013 5:17:04 AM

  25. Oh, I'm fairly certain there are rubes just as dumb in at least half the states. Not like Sanford is currently holding office. If the GOP tries to support him after this, it's just more digging its own grave. Go for it! Why not just print up bumper stickers: We love insanity!
