Senator Orrin Hatch Defends DOMA, Thinks Civil Unions Will Keep Everybody Happy

Senator Orrin Hatch believes civil unions will solve the country's inequality issues while saving the word "marriage" for heterosexuals, the Salt Lake Tribune reports:

HatchThe senator made the comment Wednesday at the end of a wide-ranging interview on Logan station KVNU, where he also said he doesn’t believe people choose to be gay, but "I draw the line on traditional marriage."

…Hatch, R-Utah, defended the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, and hopes the court will allow each state to handle this controversial issue on its own.

"I’ll say this, I do believe this could be solved greatly by a civil-union law that would give gay people the same rights as married people," said Hatch, who mentioned hospital visitations and tax benefits. "I think we can solve this problem without undermining the very basis of marital law in our country."

    IN order to make it the same rights as he said the law would have to basically read that Civil Unions are Marriage for the purposes of federal law… NO matter how that is worded the Right would not except it, and frankly neither would we.

    Oh Senator Dinosaur; you are still out of touch with society. DOMA will fade away but not as fast as you from the political scene. Marriage in the USA is not being undermined; it will simply expand to same sex couples. I know your mormon brainwashing has trouble contemplating that; but we’ll all move on without you.

    If Civil Unions are such a great compromise why have Republicans FOUGHT AGAINST them all along? It’s only now, when gay marriage seems about to make substantial gains, that people like Hatch are suddenly embracing the idea.

    The French did that in 1991. For a while, civil partnerships were even more popular than marriage among heterosexuals. Apparently, that wasn’t enough, and France is about to enact marriage equality.

    It’s acceptable to me if Civic union equal to gay marriage, however, can you give it effect immediately?

    I don’t think the house will pass that bill, the GOP and churches object any benefits give it to same sex couples.

    So it’s better to fight to legalize the gay marriage.

    The problem with “civil unions” is that they are a new construction and can provide or deny whatever responsibilities and rights that the legislature wants. They are not marriage and are never equivalent to it, because some things are always left out, for political reasons, presumably, such as adoption. In Canada, each of the Provinces and Territories had scores of pieces of existing legislation–often more than 100–to amend to allow same-sex marriage. “Civil Unions” don’t do that, and are therefore inadequate. Either you are equal or you’re not, and only marriage does that. As with race, separate is not equal because it is designed to be not equal.

    Well, considering that many ultra-conservatives want no same-sex couples to have no legal recognition at all, I suppose that this is a step in the right direction. Maybe after he’s considered civil unions for a bit, he will warm up to the idea of marriage.

    I’m fine with calling it a civil union.

    Now, get rid of “marriage” in all the laws through federal, state, and local jurisdications and replace it with “civil union”…then no problem. People can call it what they way, they can go to their own church, whatever…and call it holy matrimony, marriage, baby contract, bumping uglies…whatever they want to call it. But legally, everybody can be happy with “civil union.”

    Oh…wait…”civil union” only for those people who already are not treated equally in the eyes of the law? Marriage for everybody else? Uhhhhh…No!

    Senator Hatch you are a fool! You state that you support DOMA, and that the States should be the ones to handle this issue. OK, but DOMA effectively prevents the States from doing that. I can get married in NY, but because of DOMA and the bigots in most states my marriage will not be recognized. Hell Sir, the state that I live in, I can legally be fired for being gay, I can be evicted for being gay. Well Sir, the 14th Amendment states “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” DOMA does that, and so do the States that ban same-sex marriage.

    Way back in the late 90’s, when then-VP Al Gore was talking about reinforcing cockpit doors to protect against terrorist attacks, Senator Orrin Hatch accused the Clinton administration as “exploiting” Americans’ fears, and overstating the dangers of terrorism. (Check out the transcripts on cnn.com.)

    Ever since then, I’ve had a great deal of contempt for Hatch and pretty much anything that comes out of his mouth, because you can bet your hiney he did a complete 180 post-September 11th, and everything Bush and Cheney did was golden.

    Senator Hatch, do you remember any of the times that you took the oath of office to be part of the Senate? Did you not swear to uphold The Constitution of The United States of America, not The Book of Mormon? The POTUS, SCOTUS, and the Legislature (Senate and House of Representatives) make, and control, the laws for our country, NOT the president/prophet of the LDS Church. If you don’t want to uphold your oath, then maybe you need to resign from the Senate immediately.
