Dallas Councilwoman Outraged Over HIV Prevention Billboard Presenting Gays as 'Acceptable': VIDEO

Hiv_callad

A Dallis councilwoman is complaining about a freeway billboard that depicts a Black gay couple in an embrace and encourages people to know their HIV status, the Dallas Observer reports:

Vj_hillBut you can't plaster two gay dudes on a billboard in southern Dallas and expect it to fly with (notoriously anti-gay) Dallas City Councilwoman Vonciel Jones Hill (right). She seems to fear the ad might have a corrupting influence on passersby. In an email to Fox 4's Shaun Rabb, she expressed concern that "African American men who engage in homosexual conduct [are] presented as acceptable" in the ad and that it amounts to an endorsement of homosexuality.

[Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thompson], meanwhile, who is engaged in a reality-based fight against a deadly scourge, bangs his head against the wall in frustration. "The message is very clear," he told Rabb. "The message is: among African American men who have sex with men the rate of HIV new cases is at an epidemic proportion."

  1. So, Vonciel, question: How many billboards also advertise titty bars and pole dancing along that same stretch of highway?

  2. Associating homsexuality with HIV is homophobic in itself. Zachary Thompson of Dallas County Health appears to have made both a racial and
homophobic comment by associating race and homosexuality with HIV.

It's the promiscuity, stupid. HIV has got nothing to do with being black or homosexual.

  3. A reminder to Ms. Hill:

when I was a kid, billboards (and pretty much all advertising) never depicted people who looked JUST LIKE HER.

    Progress, Ms. Hill, progress.

  5. Another one of the thousands of homophobic bigoted politicians who populate local, state and federal government elected offices from here in the Great Rethuglican State of Texas (but, hey, Christianist right wingers, the times they are a-changin' [thanks to the state's evolving ethnic demographics])!!

  6. That billboard looks to me like a white guy and a black guy, not a black gay couple.

  7. What we have failed to grasp is that Miss Vonciel understands completely the issue of HIV epidemic status among gay/MSM black men. She just doesn't care. She feels that chronic illness or death are the wages of sin that these men have brought on themselves, and it's the job of "respectable" straight people to make their lives as difficult and unpleasant and isolated as possible. In the name of Jesus.

To quote Woody Allen, if Jesus came back and saw what was being done in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.

  9. I hope her husband or boyfriend is on the down low. Having him tested just might save her life.

  10. Joe in Ct,

Aren't you just as bad for making a connection between homosexuality and HIV?

  11. Since trolling and personal attacks are acceptable on here.

@Jason. Sorry but there is a connection between homosexual behavior and HIV in the US. Your argument as is that of Ms. Council Dimwit is why we have never been able to curtail HIV in the good ol USA.

To say "this group has high rates of HIV infection and we should do better prevention" somehow is stigmatized, racist and homophobic?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

  14. QJ201,

There is no connection between the homosexual act and HIV. There is no connection between the homosexual identity and HIV. However , there IS a connection between extreme promiscuity and HIV.

The word "homosexual" can be put in front of many things. Use it carefully. Loose phraseology plays into the hands of our enemies..

  15. Vonciel Jones Hill is a racist.

She is happy to let the HIV epidemic in the Black community go unaddressed.

Is she a member of the KKK I wonder?

  16. She just can't stand the idea of brothers hooking up with other men instead of women. Jealous much, dear?

    Posted by: Jack M | Jun 18, 2013 10:35:25 AM

  17. It is how homosexuals are created.

I was walking down the street when I was 15 and saw a billboard with 2 men on it. Immediately, I said to myself, 'I want to do a dude' and that was it - I was converted and I skipped off to Sodom. It had never occurred to be me before I saw the billboard.

    How stupid is this woman?

    Posted by: MikeBoston | Jun 18, 2013 10:42:53 AM

  18. She's super duper pissed because the billboard shows two gay black men.

  19. You overlay black-stupid with Texas-stupid and you've got some serious stupid goin' on down there.

  21. It is not a homophobic sign!?!?

It is a targeted advert to encourage gay folks to get tested. And no matter how one slices it - gay folks should be encouraged - strongly encouraged - to get tested. jeez

  22. Actually Jason. Unfortunately receptive anal sex is the highest risk activity for transmission of HIV. That's just a fact. This is an activity that more gay men take part in when having sex, as apposed to straight men. Additionally, there are less of us gay men, so that increases the chances that you might encounter someone with HIV. I know a large number of straight men who never use condoms and the biggest concerns on their minds usually turns out to be whether or not they will get someone pregnant. While in the gay community wearing a condom could mean the difference between life and death. Four of my friends are HIV positive, two of them got it while they were in what they though were committed relationships, so it's not always about promiscuity.

  23. She probably would love to see black MSM dead so not surprised she's upset with this billboard. She also has brought attention to a situation (rising HIV rates with MSM in general and especially black MSM) in Dallas and countrywide that needs it, so in a way, she's doing the organization behind this billboard a major favor.

  24. You know what the most pathetic thing about this story is? That black gay men will do absolutely nothing to challenge her publicly.....and that if white gay men do, they will attack them as "racists" for doing so.

In all seriousness, if black gay men really do not care about the homophobia in their own community--or are too cowardly to take it on--why should the rest of us care about it or them?

Is there even such a thing as a black gay male activist? (by which I do not mean RuPaul). Can anybody name one of any significance? Seriously. I have never seen one on any talk show or at any gay rights rally or protest (at least not in speaking role or leadership role)...and it certainly cannot be because the Far Left-oriented whites who drive such events would not desperately like to display racial "diversity" in such forums.

    Ask Keith Boykin that question.
