Director Peter Jackson posted this to his Facebook page a short time ago:

"Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now."

  1. I too am saddened by this. I don't love the character so much as I love the delightful glee with which McKellen attacked the part. Mugging, chewing every bit of scenery around and generally reminding us what being a showman means.

    Thank you.

  2. I'm still so annoyed they're making THREE movies out of one book.

Personally, I'm delighted. The ideal length of written text for a standard movie is essentially the novella - anything longer and you have to cut out a huge amount of plot to wedge it into 2 1/2 hours, especially if you do anything time-consuming, like actually having establishing shots, fight scenes, or scenery.

And they're using a hell of a lot of material from other Tolkien writings to add in additional story and plot to bridge the gap between the end of the Hobbit and the start of Lord of the Rings.

This isn't just an adaptation of the book. As I understand it, the material in The Hobbit will be more or less covered by the end of the second movie.

I not only thought the first Hobbit movie was well-paced and covered the right amount of the story, I'm looking forward to the extended DVD version that includes even more.
