NC Church Dumps Boy Scout Troop for Accepting Gays: VIDEO

Whittier

A church in Mint Hill, North Carolina is dumping the Boy Scouts over its policy allowing gay scouts because it is concerned about an older gay scout mentoring younger scouts, WBTV reports:

Pastor Whittier, who is the Youth Pastor and Cub Master, says after the Boys Scouts of America's National Council voted to change youth membership policy and allow openly gay youth to join the scouts, leaders of the Church and the Pack decided to discontinue the charter.

"We just don't see that lining up with core values of what we believe as a church" Pastor Whittier says. "Because of that strong deviation and direction scouting is going, we no longer feel we can participate or support the organization any longer."

Cub Scout Pack 146, which is named after biblical verse John 14:6, has about 30 cubs  - between 6 years old and 10 years old. The cubs are participating in their last scouting activities this week with cub scout day camp.

Pastor Whittier says he was hoping his pack would grow into a Boy Scout troop. Church leaders say they cannot in good conscience support the Boys Scouts and the decision to allow gay youth.

"The Boys Scout motto is that the older boys will mentor the younger boys" says Pastor Whittier. "So potentially an openly homosexual young man is leading 11 and 12 year olds in the Boy Scout motto."

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

Last week a church in Marietta, Georgia announced that it, too, was dumping the Scouts. Roswell Street Baptist Church Senior Pastor Ernest Easley crowed that he received a standing ovation from his congregation when he announced he was kicking them out.

  1. Yes, it's so much better if they're sexually molested by a straight, married church pastor.

  2. These "churches" and the Catholic "charities" that would rather harm people than promote tolerance are not in any way, shape, or form, related to the teachings of Jesus. Fools.

  4. John 14:6 says -

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

I don't see anything about gays there.

  5. Unfortunately for the kids, we can expect to see more examples of this. In all likelihood, the kids will remember the harm having come from intolerant, prejudiced religious leaders and not from gay people.

  6. Gay boys have always been in the Boy Scouts and now because they no longer have to hide it, these church's are freaking out? Such utter foolishness! Idiots!!

  8. Why is this news? So a Cub Scouts troop disbands. Like that's never happened. Until now, has anybody ever heard of Mint Hill, North Carolina? Now that we have, does anybody care? This isn't news. It's not important.

  9. Oh...Pastor Whittier. He's cute. I remember him from a rest stop on I-95 last summer.

  10. Sorry, it's not a "strong direction", the scouts are simply being properly inclusive. It does not mean the entire scouting organization suddenly is turning gay and promoting homosexuality between boys.

    Zero logic, this one.

  11. Christians....ya gotta love 'em. Punish young boys and adolescents because the Scouts have decided to be more tolerant and accepting. I just LOVE those Christian "values"!

  12. Fundamentalism and mental retardation. A continuing and growing connection. What more proof is needed?

  13. Pastor: If a 17-year-old potentially gay boy was leading a group of younger boys...well, you know - SEX!

Some "man of God" he turned out to be.

  14. Interesting that this "church" had no problems when the BSA simply required the inclusion of heretics who have chosen the Mormon lifestyle. Apparently heresy is no longer a sin to "Christians," as long as you still hate the right people.

  15. So? Get a secular supporter. When I was in the Cub Scouts, my dad was a Den Leader and we met in our house....we didn't need no stinkin' churches. In fact, I had always thought Scouting was secular. It was only until recently did I find out it was church-owned. Churches no longer exhibit good values. They exhibit all the heinous, black emotions of Hell. Oddly enough, I believe Nostradamus' Millennial prediction came true...Satan has taken over the government of churches (not the secular government) and it will take 25 years before a golden age and Satan is kicked out...that gives us another 12 years of this sh*t--then buh bye Satanist Southern 'Baptists'

  17. Being anti-gay is "core value"? Jeeez.

  18. This is a good thing for the Scouts.
Gets them out from under any possible influence by haters like this 'man of faith'. Another sponsor who believes in equality will step forward.

These actions weaken the congregations and they'll eventually realize it but for now the hate is strong in them.

  19. There will be a realignment of Scout Troops as bigoted churches cast them out and more accepting churches, businesses, community centers and organizations welcome them. I don't view this as an altogether bad thing. Getting young impressionable boys away from these religious haters and bigots is really a good thing, a blessing in disguise. So, some scouting venues will change, but overall I think the Boy Scouts will grow and be a better organization embracing inclusiveness. Now, if only they will recognize that gay scouts will grow into positive gay scout leaders and role models. But I suppose we should rejoice in one positive step at a time.

  20. I grew up near there and was involved in Boy Scouts in the Mecklenburg County Council...I made quite a number of trips to that office for various things. At first I thought this might have been the same group, but mine was Pack/Troop 164 instead of 146. Hopefully the leaders of the group are still interested in continuing and can just find another sponsor for them to continue instead of shunning these kids out into the cold.

  21. Um, the Boy Scout Motto, according to the BSA website, is "Be Prepared." It is not "...older boys will mentor the younger boys."

  23. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: TAX THE CHURCHES. If they want to play politics, then they must pay to play, as everyone else does.
