Right-Wing Group Calls For States To Secede Over SCOTUS Same-Sex Marriage Rulings

Renew America, a right-wing group that has previously published articles pondering whether gay marriage will bring about the Anti-Christ, reacted to the recent Supreme Court marriage equality victories by asking which states should begin seceding from the union.

Paul Craft, webmaster of writes: Statemap

June 26, 2013, is the beginning of the end for the United States of America. Christians, conservatives, and liberals to a small degree, who believe in the Judeo-Christian values of our forefathers will find them boxed in by the government police… From my perspective, for us to follow the laws handed down by God, we have only one option and that is to secede from the union…

The big question is, what state or states would secede from the union? My belief is if just one state would secede others would shortly follow because things will only get worse. If a new nation is formed under the Laws given down by God and the values passed down by our forefathers, this new nation will be blessed. The new nation can take the constitution as handed down by our forefathers since America is in the process of abandoning it.

Craft's article fits within Renew America's usual offerings — earlier this year they published an article entitled, "Satan's 10 commandments to the homosexual lobby".

Craft's rhetoric also follows a trend of right-wing calls to war over the legalization of gay marriage: last week, the so-called American Decency Association called the rulings "as bad as Pearl Harbor" and several prominent conservative leaders signed a pledge urging citizens to defy the court ruling. Last year, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said legalizing gay marriage would lead to revolution and several years back, National Organization for Marriage board member Orson Scott Card wrote an essay calling for Americans to rise up and destroy any government that attempts to redefine marriage.

  1. If all the Christian Conservatives want to break off and form their own separate state, fine by me. I'll just sit back and watch them die from starvation or infighting. It'll be like Lord of the Flies, but with way more schadenfreude.

  2. Don't California and New York's economies support half the country? More for us.

  3. Good luck with that.

  4. Let them secede. Seriously. They'll be bankrupt in no time unless God himself comes down and shares more of those loaves and fishes. California has the 8th largest economy in the world. They'll lose that. NYC is the center of the financial world (along with London). They'll lose that. What they will gain is the income-draining states. We all know the ones. The only thing that concerns me greatly is the mass exodus of people from those antiquated states in the new nation clogging the remaining US. To avoid the need for exodus, I would suggest the residents of the states wanting to secede wake up, find a spine and vote the losers out of office that keep getting all offended by the evolution of the rest of the world. My second suggestion is to give the new nation all the states in the lower right-hand quarter of the US. Pity we couldn't get Arizona, Utah and Alaska in that group.

  5. can we get them to secede to the moon?

  6. Please go already!

  7. If they want to go than go. Move to some country run by a totalitarian government. If they survived the loss of the liberties they enjoy, they'd end up running back here crying about how abused they were there. Most of them aren't happy unless they're miserable and have a chance to put on the hair shirt.

  8. Funny, they always said that the blacks should "go back to Africa." Now it's looking that this racists and homophobes actually would prefer Africa to the freedoms of the US.

I say them them go to Africa, where they really do belong.

  9. Abe Lincoln's mistake still haunts us. Go with my blessing. Remember, if your state wants to rejoin the Union, those who are left get to vote on it.

  10. Good. Go. Buh-bye bigots.

  11. No need to secede. The right of these red states just need to clamp down on preserving natural marriage, and make the prospect of homosexual marriage an airtight no-way. As an American who is frankly disgusted with homosexuals desecrating the institution of marriage, I cling to those red states as being where debauchery hasn't taken over. I was very proud of NC last year for voting down gay marriage. Wouldn't want them to secede. Instead I want them to revolt and send a message across the nation that homosexual marriage WILL NOT be coming to their states.

  12. More treasonous talk from the far right.

    Posted by: Lester | Jun 29, 2013 6:08:49 PM

  13. Yes, these morons are so "patriotic" that they call for committing treason because same sex couples now have some modicum of marriage equality.

  14. Here's the thing Z ... it's easy to see that your angst against homosexuals is not even about marriage.

It's about trying to use the government to restrict the rights of a group of people you don't like.

What is the shoe were reversed and you were told that because of any of your intrinsic characteristics, or your religious beliefs, or even GAWD forbid that you didn't have the right skin color that you we're deemed as less than equal by someone with more power in the government than yourself. How would that feel?

Being proud of legally enshrining bigotry fades quickly when you find that bigotry aimed at yourself.

And NC bigots can fight to their hearts content but it'll do them no good. Hate never wins.

  15. Fact is his is non sense but to claim they'd go bankrupt is foolish the south needs the north just as much as the north needs the south. The south relizes on norther industry, & financial centers, the north however would see huge price surges as they would lose their coal, food, and oil producing states and many port cities in the south would be lost as well. Like it or not we are stuck with each other north and south.

  16. NC lost gay marriage by only 10 points. I think the "For" side was like 41%. When gay marriage is proposed there again -- and it will be -- it will most likely win; especially if it's by vote. And if same sex marriage becomes the law in enough other states, the Supreme Court will probably go ahead and strike down the bans in remaining states; like Loving v. Virginia.

The south is slower to evolve on issues of equality and tolerance, but eventually the bubble bursts and they too are forced to adhere to the trend.

  18. And yet, @Ziemba, here you are lurking anonymously on a homosexual site. Looking for someone to carry your luggage? Ha ha. We've got your number.

Marriage equality will come to the red states for the same reason that racial equality has. The Constitution demands equal liberty. If Antonin Scalia sees it coming, what chance do you think you have of stopping it?

  19. I still don't understand how all these same-sex marriage foes are going to defy the Supreme Court's declaration that DOMA part 3 is unconstitutional. Will they refuse to call me by my husband's last name? (It hardly matters--I use my own anyway.) Will they have a new mode of address that purports to indicate that I am not married? ("The Single Mr. Joe the Cynic")? Will they rush to civil court and try to obtain a order that restrains me from using the words "husband" or "spouse" when I wish to refer to him? Will they push through a new Law that all same-gender married must wear a large Scarlet S on their bosoms?

The possibilities are so delicious . . .

  20. Treason is actually a very limited crime involving directly attempting to overthrow the govt. or aiding the enemy during a time of war, so suggesting that states should secede is not treason. There is actually no known mechanism by which a state could secede. Under Lincoln the standard would have been a constitutional convention.

    Posted by: anon | Jun 30, 2013 2:37:52 AM

  21. @ anon

    it is sedition

treason involves a foreign power, BUT it could be treasonous if a foreign secessionist government is set up on (even on US soil) prior to states seceding and they swear loyalty to said government

  22. I knew it wouldn't be long before all those religious nuts would start their ranting and raving and foaming at the mouth about the social evils of gay marraige. If those religous zealots want to look at pure evil they just need look inward, at themselves.

  23. As soon as these jack-wagons realize that secession will cost them their Social Security checks and Medicaid, they'll simmer down and return to their Charlton Heston film marathon.
