Fabulous Robot Gymnast Lands Quadruple Backflip, Shows Up The Competition: VIDEO

Robot #4

Just in case technology wasn't threatening to outshine humanity enough, this gymnast robot has appeared to show us who's boss. Sure, it might be more aesthetically pleasing to watch muscular guys in singlets fly between bars or flip over the vault, and their athletic skill is impressive. But this little guy is a reminder of the power of the human brain, too.

Gizmodo reports:

We've seen this bot before. Just this past March, we witnessed it stick a near impossible landing. And now it's stuck a quadruple backflip, which by all accounts appears to be it sixteenth feat of heroism. What can't this little guy do? Nothing.

  1. I for one welcome our new robot gymnast overlords.

  2. Now that is quite a feat - especially for a bunch of nuts and bolts.

  4. Why are people impressed when robots can do something humans cannot? Isn't that the point?

  5. Because this isn't a trivial engineering problem

  6. meh, when it can jump up to the bar on its own then it might be something special

  7. PS; steve

no worries.....when a supposed ai can perform the mirror test then worry. Dogs can't perform the perform test (orangutans, dolphins, chimps, elephants, apes and magpies can in that order)

  8. Filmed in a scary basement?

Relax, it's probably not Robot Ted Bundy.

  11. LMAO the buildup and the TWHACK landing had me giggling.

  12. That was cool- but the robot really needs a nice place to practice his routine.

  13. @Steve: it's actually simplified - the way the robot is attached to the bar makes it spacially a two-dimensional problem instead of a three dimensional one.

It's possible to significantly simplify the problem - if the controller carefully measured its angular velocity and position, it could release the robot at just the right angle to land just right, or very close (in which case all you'd have to do on the fly would be small corrections).

Also, you can cheat by taking 100 film clips and showing a few that accidentally worked.

  14. Wow! That's totally Prue from Bladerunner to a T.

  15. And soon that thing will be able to shoot a gun while doing the somersault. Yeah, destroy it now and never speak of this again.
