Matt Barber: 'Marriage is Owned by God' No Matter What The Supreme Court Says - VIDEO

Matt Barber

Shortly before the Supreme Court handed down their landmark rulings in support of marriage equality, Matt Barber, along with hundreds of other anti-gay activists, pledged to stand firm in his opposition to LGBT rights, regardless of what the court decided. Now, some weeks and two historic victories later, Barber is remaining firm in his conviction, and is prepared to accept any persecution or penalties that may occur.

The statement took place on the "Faith and Freedom" radio program that was broadcast yesterday, July 8. In it, he blamed the Supreme Court for "open[ing] the floodgates for persecution to occur," for those who refuse to "pretend that a man can marry a man or a woman can marry a women under any circumstances, in any context whatsoever." In his statement, Barber also makes use of the popular "render onto Caesar that which is Caesar's" quote, which, in its original context, refers to the question of taxes, and has nothing to do with same-sex marriage.

  1. That same god owns your mouth, Mr. Barber, and She reserves the right to stuff a sock in it at any time.

  2. Yo big mouth! What are you going to resist. You are a dean at a Christian college. Gays getting married won't effect you in the least if you even can lay eyes on one. Gays aren't permitted to attend your college. Hahahahahaha. You are nothing!!!!

  3. I use the "Render unto Caesar" quote often. It's quite apt if you acknowledge that marriages are performed by the state by duly licensed representatives of the state. Marriage is a construct of government, with accompanying licenses, responsibilities and privileges. "Render unto God" whatever else you like, but if the preacher isn't properly certified by the state, there is no marriage.
These religious nuts are noisy but uneducated. Ignore them.

  4. What I want to know is what the eff these losers think they're going to do to ignore the Court? They have no kind of authority whatsoever. A bunch of morbidly obese whiny losers standing on the sidelines denying my civil marriage exists makes not one whit of difference to me. I can't imagine what kind of civil penalties they really think they're going to get.

  5. What exactly would his personal actions be that would bring persecution and penalties? Is this guy a public servant charged with marrying citizens and he would refuse to do his job when it came to same-sex couples? Is he a baker of fabulous cakes that would withhold his fabulous cakes for same sex weddings? Is he an owner of a popular B&B that would refuse to offer rooms to same-sex married couples or the premises for a reception?

Who is he that he has the capacity to incur persecution and penalties for his opinion on this?

  6. I guess that's why atheists can't get married.

  7. Is it just me, or is Missy here a big sissy bear?

  8. This is a war you won't ever win Barber.
Bigotry, hatred, and discrimination masked as religion doesn't fly any more. Today's voters can see through this lie as though it were transparent. You no longer control the information they receive and with truth they have rejected your views. Your warped beliefs are just that ... yours. Selective interpretation and selective application of ancient texts has been soundly rejected by a civil society that now sees you and your ilk for what you truly are, brokers of hate. Aligning with smarmy Ralph Reed to sell hate as a political tool is failing and now you're following him off the cliff in denouncing the founding principals of this country.

Just be warned. You will never succeed in making me and my family less than in anything other than your diseased mind.

  9. Good! Great! Get as many people together as possible. Rail against us so loudly that people can't help but notice that the thing you are screaming about is in no way affecting you.

  10. What a pity this man is unaware of Church history. For the first eight centuries, the Church lacked liturgy covering marriage. It was, apparently, content with the definition provided by the secular authorities.

Marriage existed before his religion began and will continue, in all probability, long after it has disappeared.

One grows ever more weary of such as he shrilly declaiming their impending persecution - meaning, of course, their impending loss of the right to persecute others. I do not understand how such people continue to have a public profile in the USA - to outsiders, they appear far too ridiculous to warrant serious consideration.

  11. Marriage licenses are issued by the government not your "God". FACT.

  12. Someone please remind him that the concept and institution of marriage predates Christianity. The Christians do not hold a monopoly on marriage.

  13. Yes, he is a big sissy bear, and he belongs to God!

  15. One wonders how he explains the same-sex marriage rites that John Boswell uncovered in the Vatican archives back in the 80s.

Do you mean the John Boswell who was Chair of the History Department at Yale?

Yes. That John Boswell. When he published those rites, the Vatican had "no comment."

And, btw, Boswell continued his research and discovered manuscripts of similar rites in cathedral and monsatery archives all over Europe--North, South, East and West.

  16. They have nothing else, so they become more and more shrill and ridiculous

    Posted by: Rob | Jul 10, 2013 10:31:39 AM

  17. Daniel Berry, you and Miss Barber here should learn a lesson...the root of your hate for others is actually the hate you have for yourself.

  18. If god owns marriage, why doesn't he get married? Sounds a lot like the unmarried RC bishops who pretend to speak in behalf of their god.

  19. Whatever...

  20. Daniel Berry brings up a good point - that there are same sex marriage rituals in the Church. I think he is on our side in this argument.

  21. Barry can go to Heaven if he wants God's marriage. That's the only place it is being offered.

Posted by: Mike Ryan | Jul 10, 2013 11:14:58 AM

  22. @Guy, it was meant to the other comment. Sizeism is just another form of self loathing all to prevalent in our community.

  23. *too

  24. His construct of "God" may own his marriage, but no one owns mine.

    Posted by: graphicjack | Jul 10, 2013 12:02:42 PM

  25. Matt Barber doesn't seem to understand that the same-sex couples getting marriage in this country give absolutely no f**ks whether he believes their marriages are not real. Matt Barber doesn't matter I any way and is found to be laughable and pathetic by most people. What a sad and sorry closet case creep member of the Christian Taliban.
