Anchorage Pastor Kicks Out Boy Scout Troop: 'No Homosexual Will Enter the Kingdom of God'

The Anchorage Baptist Temple in Anchorage, Alaska has kicked out Boy Scout Troop 1316 and Cub Scout Pack 316 over the organization's decision to allow gay youth, the Anchorage Daily News reports:

PrevoThe church's decision came now, months later, because "we were just hoping there would be enough repercussions that the Boy Scouts might reconsider, and they haven't," the church's chief pastor, Rev. Jerry Prevo, said Thursday.

Prevo said he wasn't worried about backlash. The Bible's message is plain, he said: "No homosexual will enter the Kingdom of God."

Rev. Tom Cobaugh, the Baptist Temple's education minister who serves as liaison with the Boy Scout troop, later clarified the decision:

"Troop 1316 and Pack 316 were ministries of the Anchorage Baptist Temple," Cobaugh wrote. "ABT has not changed its position because the Bible has not changed its position on sexuality (see Leviticus 18:22, I Corinthians 6:9). The BSA has changed. They caved on their position because of political pressure and the threat that it may affect their bottom line financially, through donations and/or their tax-exempt status."

  1. Maybe now all those parents can get their children involved in the Boys and Girls Club of America (Alaska) where they don't discriminate against any child because of religion!
The real cause of this is that the Baptists ran out of money to sponsor the clubs. They are better off without the hate and bigotry this "church" promotes.
Prevo conveniently uses the Baptist's made up bible and the gays as a scapegoat.

  3. My heart breaks for the gay children who have parents that listen to this man, or men like these...and there ARE gay children crying themselves to sleep as we speak, due to their parents taking the word of crazies like this man as gospel. Shame!

  4. Can someone pull up ALL the violence spewed in the Bible?

There's a whole lotta hatred in that book. But shhhh. We have to be super silent about it because according to religious people, religion has to be sacred to all of us (FAIL!)

  5. I'm increasingly annoyed that thugs like Mr. Pervo, or whatever his name is, can cloak their bile with a tax-exempt status. He is going to use this stance to cry for money, tax-free money.

  6. I too worry about the LGBT youth who's guardians and parents attend this church and who have to endure years of torment due to this man's evil words.

  9. Just putting in my two cents for the 49th state. I spent 6 wonderful years there. Ascribing characteristics to an entire state based on the actions of a few is immature, at best.

  10. Actually, scripture is utterly silent on whether homosexuals will enter into the Kingdom of God, but Jesus himself does say in scripture "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." I'll await the banishment of wealthy persons from this man's church.

  11. The government of Alaska Doesn't have to pay people to be here. And keep talking about stuff you know nothing about, because it proves how very little you know.

  12. What a noble and bold stand, Man of God;

And to d Gay folks out there; this is what d Lord ur Creator has to tell u (believe it or not):

Leviticus 18:22 'You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. (NKJV)

1 Corinthians 6:9 ¶ Do you not know that .... Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (NKJV)

Romans 1:27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; (NKJV)

Please keep the flag of the truth flying...

  13. @ADEDAMOLA: When was the last time that you encouraged your fellow bible thumpers to stone to death all who work on the Sabbath as your primitive book requires? When was the last time you called for the stoning to death of those who curse their parents, commit adultery and worship gods other than the jealous yahweh? Or are you just another hater who uses the bible like a cafeteria, picking out those things that you can use against those you hate and ignoring the things you don't agree with or don't have the courage in a civilized society to call for? PHONY!!!

  16. RE: L GOETHE Yes, there were gays in the Scouts in the 1930s and 1940's. I know because I was in the Gay Patrol in my Troop. And you know what? Nobody cared: Not the other Scouts, or ANY Parents.

  17. Another ugly pastor saying ugly this what Jesus would do? No. They are wrong. So far from the teachings of Jesus, it is comical. Don't claim to be a pastor if you can't live like Jesus did. What a total hypocrite.

  18. Perhaps a bit of information before you dump on an entire State commenters?

Jerry Privo is originally from Tennessee, not an Alaskan by any means. He wields great power and influence over his mostly transplanted-from-other-States flock.

In contrast, our Alaska-born-and-bred Republican Senator, Lisa Murkowski fully supports marriage equality (not just civil unions - the real deal).

How many of your States have pro-marriage Republican Senators?
I'll give you a hint- unless you live here, Illinois, or Ohio- you're outta luck.
