Ellen Frowns on the Annoying Redefinition of the Word 'Literally': VIDEO

Given the fact that the dictionary has now changed the definition the word "literally" to also mean its opposite — "something that's not literally true" — and added the words 'twerking' and 'selfie', Ellen wonders if it's not being written by a 13-year-old girl.

Also, exasperation over the new word "food baby", defined as "a protruding stomach caused by eating a large quantity of food."

"So if you don't want to offend someone by asking if she's pregnant, you just say, 'is that a food baby in there?'"

  1. I remember a news reporter saying "cheap chickens are literally flying off of the supermarket shelves." Wtf?

  3. There is a metaphorical construct known as "hyperbole." It's when you overstate something for effect. When you say, "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse," you don't mean that literally (hah!) You mean it figuratively.

It would seem that the word "literally" has become commonly used as a signifier of hyperbole. In much the same way that a "simile" is a specific use of metaphor to compare one thing with another using "like" or "as," we have come across another specific metaphorical use to indicate hyperbole using "literally."

  5. I remember some 10-15 years ago, MADtv used to make fun of how "literally" was used in the language during their recurring Clyde & Judith sketches with Michael McDonald and Nicole Sullivan.
