NJ Governor Chris Christie Says He'll Appeal Ruling Legalizing Gay Marriage

Hours after Judge Mary Jacobson said that New Jersey's constitution is being violated by a ban on same-sex marriage and ordered it to be lifted by October 21st, Governor Chris Christie's administration said it would appeal the ruling, the AP reports:

ChristieOn Friday, Christie refused to take questions about the ruling, instead issuing a brief statement through a spokesman.

“Gov. Christie has always maintained that he would abide by the will of the voters on the issue of marriage equality and called for it to be on the ballot this Election Day,” said spokesman Michael Drewniak. “Since the Legislature refused to allow the people to decide expeditiously, we will let the Supreme Court make this constitutional determination.”

Christie vetoed a marriage equality bill passed by both houses of the legislature in February 2012. A legislative override of that veto has been gaining steam in recent weeks, with several prominent Republicans announcing that they would be on the side of equality.

  1. His excuse is lame. He can say he is against gay marriage. He didn't say it. Will of the people has already been expressed through their representatives in the legislatures. Why wasting time and money for a referendum?

  6. I know people close to him who are also pseudo repubs, I view him as one also and let me tell you they are all homophobes, love nothing more then to crack jokes or say things like "fudge packer " and the like. These new repubs are far worse they are variants between the tea party and the good ole boys.... I say vote this man out now and show the Country we are no longer part of this bigotry that is so blatant. We are Jersey strong not because of him we are Jersey strong because we know right from wrong! Plus he is fat and a bully so there is that :-)

  8. @Jim Stone - That's how I see it as well. A smart politician would have sat back and designed a strategy to use this as his way out. But no, he's going the pandering idiot windbag route.

  9. In order to get his day in court, he'll first have to figure out how to fit through the courtroom door.
