Pennsylvania Governor Apologizes for Comparing Gay Marriage to Incest

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has issued a statement apologizing for remarks he made on an 'Ask the Governor' program this morning in which he compared gay marriage to incest.

"My words were not intended to offend anyone. If they did, I apologize…I explained that current Pennsylvania statute delinieates categories of individuals unable to obtain a marriage license. As an example, I cited siblings as one such category, which is clearly defined in state law. My intent was to provide an example of these categories."

“If” that’s really what he thought, he would have said something like, “PA law does discriminate against certain kinds of couples looking for legal sanctions. These include children, animals, etc. At this time, this list also includes same-sex couples, who are obviously adults and humans, but nevertheless they are on the list.” This way he’d make a clear distinction. But he didn’t/doesn’t.

What a hateful, awful person…. How do such people get elected to begin with (besides the fact that millionaires give them so much money to ‘rule’ the rest of us…)?

  3. TampaZeke says

Andy, I’m really surprised that you call that an apology without even putting quotes around it. It really pisses me off when gay and liberal sites post non-apologies and label them as apologies.

Just a few weeks ago he fauxpologied for his attorney for comparing gay couples to children saying it was inappropriate and so yesterday he clarified by making a “more accurate” comparison that was ten times more offensive than his attorney’s offensive statement.

“My words were not intended to offend anyone. If they did, I apologize.”

Again with the non-apology apology. Apologies are not conditional (if/then), they are absolute.

Ignorance like this is what’s going to bring them down. Did you watch boner’s temper tantrum this morning? They’re either dumb as a box of rocks like this one or about to have a coronary like boner & brian brown. It’s so much fun to watch!

  6. david from edmonton says

Is anyone else sick of these empty apologies? They say this crap then apologize like we are to believe they truly didn’t mean it? They said it. They meant it. Apology is not accepted.

  7. rdm says

I think it’s a bit too generous to interpret the statement as an apology, and I think you should be more careful in writing your headlines. A more neutral headline might be “Pennsylvania Governor Discusses Comments Comparing Gay Marriage to Incest”

  8. ToThePoint says

“…My intent was to provide an example of these categories.” LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE! They (anti-gay bigots) are ALL alike….They apologize IF they offended anyone. Arrogance with unequaled parallel.

  9. Mary says

Why do people always say they were sorry you were offended? If they say something wrong they should apologize because their comment was wrong, not because someone took offense.

Now the Governor tell us he was using gays and incest practitioners are examples of categories of people who are not allowed licenses, not equating the two practices of homosexuality and incest. Being a social conservative I already knew that this was what he really meant. But it’s getting a little tiring to hear socons keep making this same mistake of not clarifying what they mean when they make statements that they know can be easily misunderstood.

The right-wing has a sawdust on the brain problem. The culture has “evolved” enough (not crazy about that verb, but it fits) that now anyone who wants to deny gays any kind of equality has to realize that the burden of proof is on him to prove why equality should not prevail. This isn’t 2002. Statements opposing gay rights of any kind need to be more carefully thought out. How many such bloopers do socons have to make before they learn this lesson?

  10. Darrell says

Politicians only apologize when they get a huge overwhelming backlash, They do it on purpose to get the attention anyways.

Why do US politicians totally ignore the “By the People, For the People” statement in a certain US document?

Instead using “Force the People, Ignore the People” to uphold their own ignorance and governance”

Not democratic at all compared to most modern western countries that evolve thier laws to keep up with modern changing times………

  11. northalabama says

whatever happened to “i was wrong, and i am sorry”?

a fake “apology” to “those offended” is not an admission of any wrong, it’s saying you were right, but shouldn’t have said it, because others disagree with you, and were hurt.

    that was no apology.

What if one still believes the core principle of what was said, but regrets how it was said?

Corbett does believe that same-sex marriage is a type of union which is not allowed in the state, just as marriage to a sibling is not allowed. If he believes this, why should he apologize for the belief? Shouldn’t he, instead, apologize for the glib way he stated it?

I agree, by the way, that the belief is ridiculous. I’d rather he simply acknowledge he offended and apologize for that. None of this ‘if’ stuff, but I don’t think he has to give up his belief about the invalidity of same-sex marriages under state law.
