Lockheed Martin Cuts Off Boy Scouts Over Ban on Gay Leaders

U.S. aerospace, defense and security company Lockheed Martin has announced that it will cease donations to the Boy Scouts of America over its ban on gay leaders, the AP reports:

Lockheed Martin"We believe engaging with and funding an organization that openly discriminates is in conflict with our policies," [spokesman Gordon Johndroe] said. "While we applaud the mission of the Boy Scouts and the good things they do in our communities, their policies that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and religious affiliation conflict with Lockheed Martin policies."

This year, the Irving, Texas-based Boy Scouts revised its policy to allow gay boys to participate in Scouting, but it maintained the ban on gay leaders. The change drew criticism from both sides of the debate over the anti-gay policy.

Johndroe said Lockheed Martin was pleased to see the Boy Scouts revise its membership policy but opposes the continued ban on gay leadership. The company's review of its philanthropy came at the end of the year as it reevaluates priorities for 2014, he said.

"We're taking a close look at all nonprofit organizations we support to ensure they align with our company's core values," Johndroe said.

Scouts for Equality founder Zach Wahls praised the company’s decision in an interview with Buzzfeed, saying that he hopes the news resonates with BSA leadership.

Zach Wahls“This is a big deal for two reasons,” Wahls told BuzzFeed. “First, it’s another clear sign of where the country’s business community is on this issue. And second, it’s particularly important given the ascendance of Bob Gates to the Boy Scouts executive board. He is taking over in May of 2014 and as a former secretary of defense, he has a unique relationship with Lockheed Martin. This says the issue is not going away.”

  1. Boy scouts did a big mistake with this rule, because they didn't make anyone happy. If you decide to stay in the middle, at the end your recieve backlash of everyone

  2. Lockheed Martin is a company that makes weapons which enable mass murder. It is far worse than BSA which at least doesn't kill people.

  9. Kinda surprising, considering how heavily Lockheed Martin recruits from the far-right cesspool known as Texas A&M.

  10. Great move on the part of Lockheed Martin. These organizations who are afraid of gay leaders will one day realize leaders are leaders, no matter what their sex, sexuality or orientation. I'm sure L/M has many gays in leadership roles. The Boy Scouts will someday realize one's orientation doesn't matter when they're in a leadership role. After all, there have been hundreds in their camp over the years who have been leaders while being in the closet. Best to have out gays in their ranks than secret pedophiles.

  11. Good! Yay for Lockheed-Martin (and others). I just hope they now put their support behind other worthy youth organizations that support diversity and inclusiveness. A quick on-line search reveals many good alternatives. Camp Quest, Camp Fire, Navigators USA, and of course, the Girl Scouts, are just a few good starts.

  13. Stopping donations based upon the BSA units being owned/sponsored by churches whose faiths have the homosexual behavior as a major sin... but disallowing aviation/engineering... merit badge classes in conference rooms and prohibiting BSA by from visiting and touring the factory is just hateful antagonistic discrimination when other youth groups including church school classes are still allowed. The BSA is banned by name when there is no other youth organization banned by name. This is actually in direct opposition of the Lockheed Corporate Diversity Policy that states to fully embrace all cultures, all ethnic backgrounds, all religions, all sexual preferences,... essentially telling their employees to do as the company says and not as the company does.
Besides, the US Supreme Court ruled that the BSA was never discriminating, that all private organizations have the Right of Free Association as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. Does GLAAD allow people of Islamic religions that kill homosexuals in their native country (Sharia Law) join as members here in the USA?
