RNC Committeeman Says Gays Falsely Claim People with AIDS as Their Lovers to Get Free Health Benefits

Earlier this year we reported on a controversy over remarks made by Michigan RNC Committeeman Dave Agema in a Facebook post about the SCOTUS marriage arguments.

Agema's post depicted gays as sexually promiscuous, rife with STDs, and responsible for "half the murders in large cities" and warned that homosexuals were indoctrinating children in schools. Agema fought calls for his resignation.

Now Agema's at it again. At a Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception last Thursday, Agema told partygoers, in a defense of 'traditional marriage', that gays claim people with AIDS as their lovers in order to cheat the system and get free medical benefits.

The Herald Palladium reports:

He said among his priorities is protecting traditional marriage.

"I stand for traditional marriage, no homosexual ones," he said. "... The family unit is the basic unit in society. When you tear the family apart, you tear the country apart."

He has taken flak nationally for his stance against gay marriage, but he said he doesn't mind because while working at American Airlines, he saw firsthand what happens when benefits are extended to gay people.

He said American Airlines workers would say a person with AIDS was their lover so that person could get medical benefits.

"Folks, they (gay people) want free medical because they're dying (when they're) between 30 and 44 years old," he said. "To me, it's a moral issue. It's a Biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and it's in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong."

He said he accepted the position as the state representative to the Republican National Committee so he could help get conservatives like himself elected.

  1. "And the pathologically ignorant are with you always." Isn't that a verse in The Bible somewhere?

  2. Well, even if it's true, big deal.

I mean, just like my elderly heterosexual next-door neighbor is on his THIRD wife, the last two of whom he courted with his government-health-benefits for life as the bait. He was explicit and upfront about it, as were the women who accepted his offer of marriage.

Only my example is real and actual. Not hypothectical and made-up.

  3. "I stand for traditional marriage, no homosexual ones," he said. "... The family unit is the basic unit in society. When you tear the family apart, you tear the country apart."

The irony is that the fringe Republicans like him would love nothing more than to keep LGBT individuals from ever forming legally protected families and tear apart the ones firmly established over decades. The ability to form these families will in no way cause harm to existing families much less tear them apart. Unfortunately for him, people are more educated than he realizes and will continue to form their own opinions not those "guided" by the obvious bigoted viewpoints of the fringe Republicans.

  4. But HEY, people like this zealot have enough followers to keep getting re-elected.

  5. Him talkng like this is actually a good thing.
His words have already been used to strike down a law that was intended to deny same sex couples in MI the right to put their partners on their health insurance.
The judge determined that the bill was based in part on animus due to Agema's words.
So I let him keep running his mouth,as someone who helped draft the ban in Michigan he'll do wonders for our side in proving bigotry.

  6. "I stand for traditional marriage, no homosexual ones," he said. "... The family unit is the basic unit in society. When you tear the family apart, you tear the country apart."

You'll notice he claims not the smallest scintilla of evidence for his claim; he indulges in pure, ignorant fear-mongering. If he has such concern for tearing the family apart, why doesn't he campaign against divorce? Why doesn't he campaign for increasing the minimum wage, since money concerns stand behind most family strife leading to divorce?

Further, even if true that some gay people claim marriage to people with AIDS to get "free" medical help, don't we want medical care EXACTLY for purposes like that? His argument hinges directly on the notion that LGBT folk simply don't deserve equal treatment.

  7. Let us assume, against all evidence, that " gays claim people with AIDS as their lovers in order to cheat the system and get free medical benefits."

What is so moral and Biblical about a country where people have to lie and cheat to get a basic level of health care? Jesus healed the sick for free: surely, moral, Bible-based Christians should do the same.

  8. ahh yes, exactly as jesus said- "Screw the sick, I'm sure they did it to themselves."

  9. And there are NO CASES of heterosexuals who have ever married to get healthcare. We gay people are the only ones who could have thought that up!
And thank you, I am 53 years young and I would say they are millions of us over the age of 44! Thank you!

  10. Dave Agema is projecting his sad, pathetic self. Only an evil mind who would commit such evil would theorize about it.

  11. it seems Mr. Agema is in the wrong profession; he should probably be an anti-gay minister so that he can spread his brand of hate to his flock rather than his constituency.....what folks may not understand or realize is that law makers like this who are homophobes are more than likely racists too........Mr. Agema appears to only recognize white, heterosexual, male and Christian folks........this eliminates over 50% of the population......and he is supposed to represent of the people, for the people and by the people

  12. Wow, Rick brought David Hearne back after a few months. He stopped using that name when it was obvious to everyone who the alias belonged to. I guess he hopes that people have forgotten about all that. We haven't. Alpha? What kind of alpha can't even come out to himself, let alone friends and family? Get lost, troll.

And FYI: Rick has been stealing my name as of late to post nasty, hate-filled comments. So if you see anything nasty posted by Tyler, know it isn't me.

  17. Repugnant. Repulsive. And, one wonders where these right-wing-nut-extremists get their "facts". I'd say they pull them out of the nether regions of their anatomy.

  18. No family has ever been torn apart by a member being gay. Only when members are *anti*-gay. Don't believe me? Ask Rick Warren how well his anti-gay ideologies served his family. On second thought, don't. He got what he wanted, he drove his own son to suicide - which to Rick Warren was no doubt a relief. Now he can bury his son in the closet he never wanted to be in in the first place.

You know, Michigan is often like The South's revenge - michigan republicans are often among the most vile in the union.

  19. As per the story on TR yesterday about "gay" search terms online. How about "Are gay men coming for my closeted husband?"? I'm sure millions of families have been broken up because gay men snatch husbands away from their wives, all so that they can marry them themselves to get spousal benefits! Think of the children!

I think he's talking about corporate "domestic partner" benefits fraud in part, but that has nothing to do with marriage rights. If you are required to be married to receive such benefits, the incidence of fraud will be reduced.

  20. If his allegation were true, anyone claiming someone with a life-threatening disease is his partner in order to obtain medical care for that person is more Christ-like than Agama and his ilk can conceive of.
