Russell Brand Offends Students with Gay Slur at Cambridge University Talk

Russell Brand offended some students during a recent talk he gave at Cambridge University, after using a gay slur to quiet the audience, the Varsity reports:

Brand"At one point he jokingly reprimanded the audience, exclaiming, 'Shut up you Harry Potter poofs!' While most in attendance seem to have found this funny, some have spoken out against the use of the term. The CUSU LGBT representative Charlie Bell said, 'It was a bit of a shock to hear that the word poof is considered an appropriate term to level as an insult, especially by someone like Brand, who models himself as the very model of a modern liberal… he should apologise unreservedly and immediately.'"

“While most in attendance seem to have found this funny, some have spoken out against the use of the term.” ROFLMAO. Everybody is offended by something.

It’s hard to be taken serious as an intellectual when you’re a limey goofball.

Posted by: Kev C …. So that’s better then calling someone a “Harry Potter poof”????

“Poof” is definitely derogatory. Would I have brushed it off? Likely.

People add “fat” to everything when it really says nothing; ‘big fat idiot’. I’m certainly guilty of calling people “crackers”, “white-trash”, “trailer-trash” and the like. Same goes for ‘fag’, ‘queen’, ‘tranny’ and even ‘poof’… but I’m a gay, white guy, so I get a VIP pass for most things & rarely am asked to apologize.

Especially with comedians, whose job it is to provoke us into recognizing our own bad behavior… I would give him room to move.

There’s a difference between friendly insults, and actual insults.

This appears to be the friendly variety. He doesn’t get a pass because he’s liberal. He gets a pass because he has earned trust.

Time will tell if Brand is turning into Baldwin. If he goes full Baldwin, he’ll be treated similarly.

  5. Perry says

The gays are always excusing behavior in people they believe are on their side politically (assuming this guy has any idea about politics in general) that they would crucify a political opponent for doing.

  6. danswon says

“Poof” is such an archaic term here in the UK, it’s not really offensive at all. And I should imagine Brand was saying it with the exact same amount of irony the that words “Harry Potter” were which preceded it. People need to stop getting so offended by trivial things. This guy is absolutely on our side.

  7. Tone says

I am more perplexed by the connection to Harry Potter. I think that Russell Brand’s budding activism can do a world of good, particularly if it keeps him from attempting to do any more acting. However I’d call this one worthy of a yellow card. We get it, just mind yourself. Only minorities can properly and legitimately reclaim hurtful words and take their sting away.

  8. David says

Sad commentary on the times we live in that Russell Brand is what passes for “celebrity”. In earlier eras he wouldn’t be taken seriously as a shoe-shine boy.

“Russell, honey, you don’t get a pass on this one. Apologize. And hope it is accepted.

Agreed. Own up, Russell. You’re not a bad dude, ur generally funny as heck, but you should no better than to even accidentally knock gay folk. Ur camp, man, and it’s an asset for you; if you don’t apologize, well…don’t count on our loyalty.
