Gay Republican Congressional Candidate Shows Partner in Campaign Ad for First Time: VIDEO

Former San Diego councilman Carl DeMaio, now a Republican candidate for Congress, is making headlines for a brief segment of a new campaign ad which features his partner, Johnathan Hale, as the couple marches in a Gay Pride parade, the Wall Street Journal reports:

Several GOP campaign officials and Elizabeth Wilner, who tracks campaign ads for the nonpartisan firm Kantar Media, said it was the first time they knew of a candidate of either party airing an ad featuring a gay partner. The implications are deep for a Republican Party whose platform defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman at a time when same-sex marriage is becoming more broadly accepted.

"This is who I am," Mr. DeMaio said in an interview. "It's something that's important to me. I want to embrace equality, and feel like the party should, too."

NOM is a foe of DeMaio and plans to run ads against him before the June 3 primary.

The WSJ adds:

He is one of the party's top challengers this year as it tries to unseat Democratic Rep. Scott Peters. Although other Republicans are running for the seat, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) has given Mr. DeMaio $10,000, and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) contributed $5,000. Conservative Georgia Rep. Tom Price kicked in $1,000.

  1. Dude's a Republican. I hope he loses. Gay, bi, or straight, Republicans suck.

  2. Carl may be a great guy but he is a Republican. It is important that the Democrats regain control of the U.S. House and enact progressive/liberal legislation and so I sure hope he loses.

  3. Why would a gay man choose to be a Republican? It shows bad judgement!

  5. Go Carl, go! We're rooting for you up and down the coast. Vote the person, not the party.

  6. It's very important for Republicans to see a gay male Republican with his male partner.
You guys may not like Republicans, but something like this is a much needed educational lesson for them.

  7. As a gay San Diegan, I am painfully aware that this guy is a Rush Limbaugh Wanna-Be who just happens to be fond of cock. He's the gay community's worst nightmare.

  8. Good for him! Too bad there are so many bitter haters on here.

  10. This guy is a nightmare for multiple reasons (including, among many others, his very cozy relationship with developers and other powerful economic interests such as Doug Manchester, conservative newspaper publisher and major donor to the Prop 8 campaign). On gay rights, he was silent during the campaign on Prop 8 in 2008 and has since pledged to his many anti-gay backers that he won't "push the gay special agenda" (promoting the notion of haters that demands for equal treatment under the law are some sort of quest for "special" rights). As noted, he is very closely allied with some of the biggest funders of Prop 8. We should also remember that, in addition to all of DeMaio's own troubling record and right-wing positions, his will be another vote for a Speaker Boehner and a certainty that ENDA and other important progressive legislation will get no votes. San Diego's LGBT community did itself proud by soundly rejecting this quisling in 2012 and I am confident that they will do so again in favor of a far superior Democratic candidate whose allegiance to our community has been much more solid.

  13. I live in SD and he is a vindictive, nasty person. I could care less that he is gay. He is a right-wing foaming at the mouth republican.

  14. Vote for principles not sexual orientation, not party. Demand better than what we've been getting.

Voting for someone who happens to be gay as the primary criterion is playing identity politics the same as voting for any candidate just because he is in a certain party.

What is his stance on immigration, TPP, ENDA, Keystone Pipeline, domestic spying, global warming, education, Wall St regulation, banking reform, big pharma, job creation, unemployment, net neutrality, voting rights, strengthening social security? Is he a member of ALEC? Who are his backers/financiers? The list goes on. Get his answers on legislation he would propose or support on these issues. Do the same thing for his opponent.

Stop playing identity politics and work towards the idea of making the US a great Nation, not a collective of disparate regions.

  15. When this guy was on the City Council. He literally had to be shoved into endorsing city resolutions supporting marriage equality and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. His straight GOP colleagues were even ahead of him. Only on the day of the votes did he announce his intentions. He made secret deals with the radical religious right to not push LGBT equality issues when he ran for mayor and is the darling of the local far right establishment.

Someone once said it was important to have a gay voice at the table when decisions are made. Well..what happens when that gay voice is more interested in just being there as opposed to actually leading on issue of equality and equal treatment under the law?

    Carl DeMaio is a fraud.

  16. What others have said. The modern day Gay Uncle Tom needs to lose. Or win the primary and then lose the actual race.

  20. Republicans will look gays straight in the eye & LIE to get their vote. Once they're in power, they will obediently follow the orders of their base.

  21. Carl De Maio is a pitiful man! He supports a political party whose agenda is to take his own rights away. NEVER! Don't let him fool you. This is all bull crap. This man emails me outside of his email blasts when I respond 'TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST - I WOULD NEVER VOTE REPUBLICAN' and is so clueless! But then, he is a Republican. CARL DeMAIO IS A SKANK!

  24. doesn't this guy know that gays are only allowed to think one way?

    Posted by: Perry | Feb 13, 2014 8:59:05 AM

  25. These anti-Republican hating comments on here demonstrate that so many Towleroad readers are as much hating BIGOTS as the very people they decry. And they're perfectly fine being that way. Amazing.
