Out Dutch Snowboarder Cheryl Maas Makes Gay Rights Statement on Sochi Slope: VIDEO

1_maas

Dutch snowboarder Cheryl Maas, who is one of six openly gay athletes competing in Sochi, failed to qualify in the slopestyle event at Sochi yesterday and will have to try again on Saturday.

As the camera focused on Maas at the end of her run she looked right into it and lifted a gloved hand to the lens - which just happened to be covered in unicorns and rainbows.

She also said something. If anyone can translate, please let us know in the comments.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. The dutch speaking commenter does not refer to any gay rights statement.
When Cheryl shows the inside of her glove, he says: ' her thumb is going up here' prior to this last moment only her performance in the competition is discussed.

  2. As far as I know, the gloves she is wearing aren't specific for the Olympics. Her coach and a another member of the Dutch athletes representation indicated that she had been wearing those for years.

She does disagree with the Russian law though. She thinks it's a "step back in time".

  3. Yeah, I think you're reading too much into that. Looks like she was just upset with her performance.

  4. Baloney. What athlete being interviewed puts their glove up to the camera for nothing?

Maas very obviously wanted the audience to see her rainbow & unicorn covered glove.

She's an out proud & married Lesbian making a statement of support for her extended Russian brothers & sisters. Good on you Cheryl.

  9. A queer person in a SUPER anti-queer environment? You better believe she knows exactly where her rainbow mitts are and who's looking at them at all times.

  10. Cheryl Maas knew exactly what she was doing: This is an obvious gesture in support of gay rights!
