Michigan Pastors Hold Press Conference Blasting Gay Marriage Ahead of Court Challenge: VIDEO

Pastors

A coalition of approximately 50 Michigan pastors held a press conference on Monday blasting same-sex marriage ahead of today's trial challenging the state's ban on gay marriage and gay adoption, the Detroit Free Press reports:

Quoting from Martin Luther King Jr. and the Bible, the pastors said that gay marriage violates the teachings of Christianity. Swimp quoted from King’s famous letter ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail’ to say that “we have a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws” that don’t conform the law of God. The majority of pastors at the press conference were African-American.

“It’s going to tear the foundation of the family asunder,” Pastor Caldwell said of gay marriage. “It’s going to have a devastating effect.”

“We ... stand by both our Michigan Constitution and our Judeo-Christian values,” said Pastor Lennell Caldwell of First Baptist World Changers. “We believe that marriage between one man and one woman creates the best possible environment for the health and wellness of children ... no one is entitled to redefine marriage.”

The pastors said their coalition represents Baptist, Church of God in Christ (COGCI), Pentecostal, and Catholic denominations.

  5. While invoking Martin Luther King he might also want to look at what the late Coretta Scott King had to say about racism and homophobia being the same and all of the other numerous things she said in support of LGBT rights. Methinks she might have a better understanding of what her husband may have thought than these "pastors".

  6. "no one is entitled to redefine marriage.” Just whatever a Christian believes at that moment. Let's go back to Old Testament multiple marriage. and human sacrifice. In order for Christianity to survive the church fathers have to stop cherry picking their battles.

Religious zealots...wake me when you have a new argument. This is getting really boring.

And as I always say, your religion is a choice, pure and simple.

  9. The radical, religious conservatives in this country and around the world have declared war on LGBT people. They bully, threaten, insult, ostracize, attack, imprison and murder us...and all in the names of their gods and their so-called faith. What these bigoted idiots don't seem to realize is that they are destroying the very institutions they proclaim as holy and that future generations will look upon their actions and be ashamed.

  12. I expect them to be running through the streets at any moment, arms and hands flailing above their heads screaming like wounded banshee that their world is crumbling. And it is. America will no longer tolerate their bigotry and hate. The party is over Pastors.

  13. If religious groups are looking to impact political laws, they should start paying taxes like every other citizen first.

Same-sex marriage does in no way impact their religion, no one is forcing their own religions into expanding acceptance to same-sex couples. No one. These are state affairs, guided more and more morally by Human Rights and a strive for equality to all citizens, NOT churches, or any other Discriminatory religious organization.

  14. The belief that there are two classes of people and that one deserves preferential treatment is nothing new in these religions. Religions based on acceptance and equality continue to gain more ground with Americans and all the cherry picked quotes you can muster won't change the fact we have all moved on from your religious hate.

  15. All those black pastors should be ashamed of themselves. The same bible they preach from and the same scriptures from that bible were used as arguments to keep slavery alive, and again during the civil rights struggles of the 60s. Those that forget history are condemded to repeat it.

  17. @Michael,

About the 15th Century. That's when the clergy started focusing on the peasantry in regards to "marriage". Before then, The Church, focused on controlling the nobility through Church sanctioned "marriage".

  19. “It’s going to tear the foundation of the family asunder”

“It’s going to have a devastating effect.”

“We stand by both our [state] Constitution and our Judeo-Christian values.”

When have we heard rhetoric like this about marriage? That's right, it was 1968, in Virginia, when it was very slightly different:

“We believe that marriage between people of the same race creates the best possible environment for the health and wellness of children ... no one is entitled to redefine marriage.”

  22. Aside from which, I've never understood this "for the sake of the children" argument. The vast majority of same-sex couples will never raise children. The children who are raised by same-sex couples will be raised by same-sex couples whether or not the couple is married. The children being raised by same-sex couples are much better protected if the couple have all the rights that come with civil, legal marriage.

So what, exactly, is the objection?

Posted by: Gregory In Seattle | Feb 25, 2014 11:35:57 AM

  23. I don't know about the vast majority of same sex couples never raising children, Gregory. From the most recent statistics I have seen, there are a lot of same-sex couples raising children together, perhaps over a quarter of ss couples.

  24. 50? That's a tiny minority.
